St. John (Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer) builds on his 2007 New York Times article about the Fugees, a soccer program for boys from families of refugees from war-torn nations who have been resettled in the town of Clarkston, Ga., 13 miles east of Atlanta. Led by the founder and coach Luma Mufleh, a strong-willed, Jordanian woman who turned her back on a privileged past to stay in America after attending Smith College, the three youth teams are a conglomeration of players from Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East. The challenges they face are many, including an ongoing fight against city hall for a field on which to play, and getting by with subpar equipment. Their biggest challenge, however, is the difficulty immigrants face in learning the ways of a strange land and living with the memories of tragedy (some players had lost a parent to violence or imprisonment). In spite of it all, the Fugees compete admirably with mostly white, better-funded suburban teams. St. John begins with an inspiring description of a beautifully played game and then delves into the team's formation, but his storytelling takes on the methodical approach of a long series of newspaper articles that lack narrative flair and progression. This book comes out of those articles. It gives more detail about the town and, most particularly, the three soccer teams composed of refugee boys (the Fugees) who were coached by Luma Mufleh, an American-educated Jordanian woman. The book is a sports story, a sociological study, a tale of global and local politics, and the story of a determined woman who became involved in the lives of her young charges. Keeping the boys in school and out of gangs, finding a place for them to practice, and helping their families survive in a new world all became part of her daily life. Engagingly written, this volume will appeal to fans of Larry Colton's Counting Coup (Grand Central, 2000), H. G. Great perspective for the suburban soccer parent, coach, referee

I purchased this book (unabridged) at Audible.com and have listened to it several times over the last couple of years. It's one of my favorite listens. As a long-time suburban soccer parent, coach, and referee, I can relate to many of the stories told in this book of Luma and her players. My nine year old son and I also listened to this this past summer on a long road trip and he enjoyed it as well. There were some parts that he didn't understand or had questions about, so we would pause the playback and talk about things like emigration, poverty, war, and the importance of a good offside trap.

I saw this book again in my Audible library the other day and am looking forward to hearing it again and connecting up again with my friends on the Fugees. The program continues today, and you can find out current info over at fugeesfamily.org.

Wonderful Read

I chose this book from a course list for an undergrad liberal arts paper. I grew up playing soccer and thought, "I love soccer, and there is most likely something deeper to this story but it beats reading a biography or historical event novel." I very pleasantly surprised! This tugged on my heart strings, brought a smile to my face, a tear to my eye, and had me disgusted and appalled by various people/events throughout the book. I just finished the audio book while I was waiting for the paperback to arrive. Very well written. This story is honest, horrible and wonderful all at the same time. Many opportunities to step back and wonder: Do I think like that? How do I feel about this? What would I do if that happened?

A deeply inspiring story reflecting the overall immigrant experience

Warren St. John relates the story of Luma Mufleh, a Jordanian responsible for serving the refugee community of Clarkston, Georgia. After graduating from Smith College, Ms. Mufleh decided to stay in the United States, as opportunities for women were few and far between in Jordan. As a result of this decision, her old-guard parents disowned her and she was left to fend for herself. A lifelong soccer enthusiast, she was surprised to see countless immigrant youths playing pickup games of soccer in empty lots in Clarkston. She organized a group into a team called The Fugees, pairing rigorous soccer practices with mandatory after-school classes. Managing 45 young men between the ages of 10 and 17 is no easy task, as St. John shows us thorough Mufleh's struggles to build solidarity and confidence amongst group of immigrants from all over the world. The author shows us, through first-person interviews with Mufleh, the players and their families, the tenacity and spirit of those who seek refuge from war-torn countries only to encounter difficulties in their new homes. Clarkston's mayor as well as a number of law enforcement officers and civil servants do all they can to prevent the Fugees from finding a home playing field, despite Mufleh's passionate advocacy of her charges. St. John points out how refugees' struggles in Clarkston are a microcosm of the immigrant experience as a whole. This deeply inspiring story is told artfully, in thoroughly readable prose.

About the Author
William Stallings has made a unique contribution to understanding the broad sweep of technical developments in computer networking and computer architecture. He has authored 17 titles, and counting revised editions, a total of 41 books on various aspects of these subjects. In over 20 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. Currently he is an independent consultant whose clients have included computer and networking manufacturers and customers, software development firms, and leading-edge government research institutions. He is a member of the editorial board of Cryptologia, a scholarly journal devoted to all aspects of cryptology. He is a frequent lecturer and author of numerous technical papers. His books include "Data and Computer Communications, Eighth Edition" (Prentice Hall, 2007), which has become the standard in the field. Dr. Stallings holds a PhD from M.I.T. in Computer Science and a B.S. from Notre Dame in electrical engineering.

I like that the chapters are not ridiculously long like other text books. They are consistently in the 20 page range, so you can easily commit a chapter a night even when you are busy with other things. Reads very easy too, I don't get lost in the details.

Good content, very hard to read as a kindle edition.

The content is just fine however the kindle edition on a Mac or iPad doesn't allow flipping the background color around, so the cyan headers and text blocks are basically illegible. Not having a kindle device, couldn't say how it displays there. It also doesn't support text-flow resizing so you're stuck zooming and scrolling left to right, up and down. Overall an epic fail as a kindle publication. Guess the publisher isn't as tech savvy as the authors!

Just the very basics and good to help learn How to think in 5 elements, but errors in given info/relations.

This book just presents 5 elements and relationships and is good for someone like Mom or Grandma or youngsters who have zero concept of 5 elements. Or even the typical "(western) feng shui enthusiast" who thinks it has anything to do with decorating and organizing and such nonsense. It is very easy reading and understanding. It is definitely not a reference and not worthy of an adult teaching curriculum. This book is just helping to show people how to think in 5 elemental relationships, and is pretty long considering that is all that it is doing. I read this book a few months ago while visiting the US, but I recall many times reading statements that went against fundamentals learned in hong kong, taiwan, and japan (dont trust anything in mainland china after Yale-man Mao's proxy communist reprogram/ westernization, remember all tradition was best preserved by USA's KMT in Taiwan), and definitely dont trust the specific examples and relations given in the book. Just use it as beginner to learn relationships and how to think about it.

A Good Place to Start

I practice and teach qigong, and have read a dozen or so of the books recommended by my teachers, and I recommend "Wood Becomes Water" to my students as a first read on the subject of Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM can quickly become complicated, but this book keeps things simple and clear and still gives a feel for the breadth and depth of the subject.

A real motivator

I just finished this book and I must say it has truly motivated me to make changes, some small but many LARGE! Gail has successfully tied together seemingly unrelated areas of life that actually co-exist and concisely described how they affect each other. This knowledge has already prompted me to modify how I approach my business, projects, home, family and yes, self.
I highly recommend this book for anyone, especially those desiring to make purposeful and constructive changes in their lives.

Vietnam: A Quick Guide to Customs & Culture

As the title says, the book is a quick guide to Vietnamese customs and etiquette. It does not go into great depth but covers the subjects overall pretty well. I'd recommend it. Contents include how to avoid culture shock; Vietnamese attitudes and values; historical and political background; religion, customs, and traditions; the Vietnamese at home; leisure, social, and cultural life; dos, don'ts, and taboos; body language; hospitality, food, and drink; giving and receiving gifts; business briefing; and language and communications. That's a lot to cover in 168 pages in a pocket sized book. I'd also recommend "Vietnam Today" by Mark A. Ashwill for a little more depth.

Out of Date

This might have been a little useful five years ago when it was first published, but it is quite out of date in 2011. I would not recommend purchasing it until, and if, it is updated. Vietnamese people have really moved forward in the last decade and are currently a bustling and very capitalistic society. Also, it is relatively superficial and provides relatively little of practical use.

Vietnam - Land of Smiles!

It's a clich� in our consumer-oriented world to say that yet another new device or accessory is "must-have". Even so, I don't hesitate to say that for the intending traveller to Vietnam this little book, clearly designed to fit easily into the pocket or backpack pouch, is a must-have item.
I write with some authority because, although I've not yet been to Vietnam, I have a Vietnamese wife who in turn has Vietnamese children and numerous relatives and friends from her homeland and who now live here in Australia.
This means that my exposure to many aspects of their culture has been and is reached from the privileged position of head of our small family. I can therefore vouch for the accuracy of much of the excellent advice Mr Murray has provided in this book.
That I can't give my blessing to the whole of the contents is not a reflection on the author, or those contents, but rather is my bowing to his vastly superior knowledge of both the people and the land he describes. In other words I found, in spite of my experience, there was much for me to learn, and indeed one reading is not sufficient to take in and retain all that he has to offer.
In recent years Vietnam has been re-discovered. After decades of civil war followed by more decades of dislocation and isolation this little country is finally emerging again, and in doing so is giving the lie to the view that it is a hostile place. Far from it, visitors from around the world are being surprised by its beauty and charm.
So, if you're planning a trip to the land of these friendly and hospitable people, or even if you're merely curious about them, their ancient culture, and their long and fascinating history, I can only repeat, "Culture Smart - VIETNAM" by Geoffrey Murray is a compact, sensitive, authoritative, informative, easy-to-read, must-have.

Very helpful!

This book contained a great of information that helped me improve my sleep and to wake up on time in general. One tip that was mentioned in this book that helped me was that I should go expose myself to the sun each morning. This made a difference in terms of me getting more energy in the morning. Because of this book I have also started to use different alarm clock sounds to wake up to in the morning instead of the standard BEEP BEEP one and that helped my sleep! I would definitely purchase this book if you want to improve your sleep or wake up on time!

Practical tips

I have never been an early riser, and it has always been something I've wanted to change. This book includes practical and easy tips that I'd like to start trying. In the past I have always "thought about" using some of these ideas (setting the alarm clock farther away from the bed) but fail to actually do them. Now that I am getting a little older, I see more importance in waking earlier and being more productive in the morning hours. Thanks for the read.

This book is one of the best of read on strategies and motivation for waking up in the morning. The alarm clock tips allowed me to realize I was likely using mine the wrong way. I've had an a negative emotional response to waking up and not oversleeping over the years and this has helped me change my view on it!

The Buck Stops

Lionel Shriver's new novel, "The Mandibles: A Family 2029-2047" is captivating, and at the same time a humorous and chilling work of speculative fiction. Early on, one of Shiver's characters, in referencing the works: "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "1984", says: "Plots set in the future are about what we fear in the present. They're not about the future at all." Since this particular character turns out to be extremely wrong about a lot of things, I take this as a wink to the reader that Shriver believes that many of her dire predictions about the economic future of the US may indeed become true. We'll see!

"The Mandibles" begins in 2029 (100 years since the "crash" of 1929). In what is later called "The Great Renunciation", the president (who is a "Lat": of Latin descent), calls for the renunciation all US debt and defaults on all foreign debt. Invoking the International Emergency Powers Act of 1977 (it's real), he calls for all gold to be confiscated. Blame is placed on nebulous "hostile foreign" entities who have tried to replace the dollar with the "bancor". The President, in addition to recalling all gold (including jewelry and dental work) from every citizen, has ordered the military to do a door-to-door search for hoarded gold and for those responsible to be fined and imprisoned. In addition, the US has "reset" all US Treasury bonds to zero and inflation has driven the price of a (scarce) head of cabbage up to $30. Some folks are happy that the "uber-rich" or the 1%-ers are falling like dominoes seeing it as finally a way to erase the vast economic disparities. The US starts printing (now almost worthless) money by the truckload, though with the toilet paper scarcity - well, you can imagine what happens.

The novel revolves around the eponymous Mandible family, founded by wealthy grandfather Douglas Mandible aka "Grand Man". His oldest granddaughter, Florence, lives in Flatbush, NY, with her teen-aged son, Willing (no kidding), and her lover Esteban. Florence is highly educated (Barnard) but can only find work processing cases in a homeless shelter. Her son, Willing, is the only one who seems to grasp what is happening to the economy, but of course, no one listens to him - he's just a kid! Florence's younger sister Avery, a pseudo-psychotherapist, is married to Lowell, a professor of economics at Georgetown. They have three children, Savannah, Goog and Bing (yep, named after search engines). Avery is used to the good life and now finds that she can't even afford olive oil. It's a long way down. Lowell has a particularly difficult time accepting the economic realities that don't match up with his economic theories.

Shriver's fictional future is full of interesting and humorous possibilities: Putin is still in power: dictator of Russia. Arnold Schwarzenegger ran for president necessitating the 28th Amendment (requiring the President to be born on American soil) to be nullified. Judge Judy was appointed to the Supreme Court (which made cases much shorter). Also in 2024, the entire infrastructure of the US (electricity, water, The Internet - gasp!) was shut down for three weeks and chaos ensued. China was blamed (no proof ever attained). Journalism is dead - no source can be trusted (I'd say that's already happened). I don't want to give away too many of Shriver's "treats" so that you can savor all the ironies yourself, but one about Mexico and a wall is particularly biting.

Shriver is in her element with her sterling wit, scathing satire, and stunning irony. This is the kind of novel you'll want to talk with people about - so I highly recommend it for any Book Club with nerves of steel, because it's going to stir up some fervent feelings about race, class, money, guns, and trust in the government. It couldn't be coming out at a more auspicious moment in US history!

A fable of the collapse of American society in the not-so-distant future.

This was a fun read further distinguished by an unusually strong grasp of economic topics.

Basically, the plot shows an extended family of well-off whites with advanced degrees in New York and Washington DC struggling to cope with the collapse of the US economy and social fabric into Zimbabwe-like, Venezuela-like conditions after China and other nations lose confidence in the strength of the U S dollar, apparently because the Fed, under Chair Krugman, has monetized the national debt to enable the government to keep paying out entitlements to the elderly, and hyper-inflation ensues, along with capital controls and prohibition of ownership of gold, which is enforced by police invasions of homes, ripping open sofas and other property. Exacerbating matters, the demagogue of a President repudiates the national debt, "standing up to foreigners" like many a Latin American demagogue before him, which of course does turns off the capital spigot and leaves the U S economy low and dry. As we see in countries like Venezuela now, shortages immediately develop of basic products ( I particularly enjoyed the pages where the family figures out how to cope with the shortage of toilet paper ), the private sector collapses and social order breaks down; the police spend most of their day extorting bribes rather than attempting to enforce the law, which everyone needs to break to survive. The family loses multiple members to murder; and loses their homes to evictions, both legal and illegal.. A teenage son, who appears to be the voice of the author, resorts to armed robbery to feed the family, and leads them to a relatively safe place, although even that is ultimately confiscated.

The book jumps ahead a generation to a point where, in addition to the US having forsaken all military and geopolitical influence, to the point that President Chelsea Clinton can only send a condolence note to invaded allies, and Mexico having built a wall to keep Americans out, the U S has abandoned pretty much all of its principles (except the one that people in power get re-elected based on handouts), and devolved completely into a crumbling wasteland that the surviving members of the family cross in a hydrogen car to arrive at a metaphorical border, the crossing of which they may or may not survive. The author resolves the fates of the main characters in a satisfying way, if you believe in hard money, a flat rate tax, broad civil liberties (including with respect to bearing arms) and see a work ethic as more necessary to the survival of society than an expansive welfare state.

Bleak as its message is, it has a situation comedy / late-night satire tone ("Post-Apocalyptic Modern Family") which undoubtedly accounts for its popularity. I must say I am surprised at its success given that its underlying perspective resembles most strongly a Ted Cruz for President campaign brochure. In addition to its implicit advocacy of right-wing economic principles, it is pretty bluntly anti-immigration. I admire the author for her ability to turn economic concepts into entertaining fiction and for the courage to adopt a perspective that is far from popular these days.
I suspect many readers will find it ideologically unpalatable, even disguised as fiction. (Without realizing that they are re-enacting the part of the prudes in the 1960s and 1970s who complained about movies and books and music that defied the moral norms of the era).

It is a fast read and a good beach or airplane book.

Destruction to Desolation: Shriver’s Course of Empire

It’s hard to classify Lionel Shriver’s latest novel, The Mandibles: A Family, 2029-2047, as futuristic dystopian fiction if for no other reason than the present direction and momentum of the U.S. could bring us something like Shriver’s vision in a decade or so. The upheaval and displacement summon up visions of the Russian revolution (think Dr. Zhivago and family losing all but one room in their house, and then finally the family is displaced. Or, the Joads in The Grapes of Wrath).

The novel also feels like a natural sequel to So Much for That, where a man whose plans to retire to a remote island are derailed by his wife's diagnosis of cancer. The man’s wife with all the treatments not covered by their insurance causes a vast portfolio her husband acquired from selling his handyman repair company to disappear within months. The wife is diagnosed as terminal and the man is fired. Perfect title. The two novels should be filmed as season one and two on HBO or Showtime.

Shriver’s opening in Mandibles is a little difficult to following owing to the extensive cast of characters which comprise the large Mandible family. Subsequent editions of the book would do well to include a Mandible family tree. Still, the narrative settles into a fast-paced rhythm.

Most of the family are struggling to some degree, awaiting for deliverance by the family’s 97-year old patriarch (Grand Man) and inheritances from his vast fortune. But 100 years after the big crash, a second crash (a la Mr. Robot, Phase 2) wipes him out. A number of countries have issued a new currency, but exclude the U.S. The Mexican U.S. president takes drastic measures, one of which is to ban the new currency. So the Mandibles and many other Americans with worthless dollars face runaway inflation resulting in, for example:

• A head of cabbage selling for $20, later $30; zucchini, $24/lb.; snap peas, $31/lb. and shortages and bare shelves are on the rise.
• Government search and seizure of gold (hiding it is treason).
• Travelers cannot take more than $100 out of the country.

When “Grand Man” is evicted from his $27,000 a month luxury retirement home, one family member suggests Medicaid assistance. Ah, but they’ve changed the rules. This assistance is denied if any family members have any assets. A gut check tells me this one is coming.

Near the middle of the book, there are at least 10 family members living in a small house so that it takes on a “Shameless” vibe. But even this arrangement doesn’t last long. There is a break 300 pages in, punctuated with a violent shocking climax followed by a jump to 2047. To say that the U.S. has recovered is to accept a desultory life of mediocrity with a re-branded IRS tracking citizens who are required to have chips planted in the backs of their heads which can trace earnings, purchases, and movement.

Along the way, Nevada has seceded and is considered a kind of “free zone,” a blank spot on any U.S. map, which Shriver presents as an acceptable libertarian refuge. Depending on your politics this may be off putting. One of the survivors, Willing Mandible, instrumental in the family’s survival 18 years earlier, decides to head there in search of an Uncle Jarred who had defected there years before. Willing, along with his 92-year old Aunt Nollie find Jarred. They are successful and establish a foothold where Willing sends for other family members. While it’s not utopia, it’s simply an “off the grid” place to survive where the main requirement is self-reliance. Nevada has its own currency and has a flat tax of 10%. No social security, no medicare, no public assistance. If you get sick you better have some caring family members.

Politics aside, Shriver’s prose is compelling. A visual analogy for Part One (300 pages) might be Thomas Cole’s fourth in a series of five paintings (“Course of Empire): “Destruction.” Part Two may be compared to the final painting in the series: “Desolation" (the aftermath). Over this time period, China has annexed Japan. Indochina has invaded Australia. Finally Russia annexes Alaska. A U.S. Senator says, well Alaska is so far away anyhow.

Adventure and suspense along with romance. Bounty hunter hunts down daughter of rancher so that she can marry an American to save his ranch. Daughter escapes and hides, eventually bounty hunter finds her. He does not trust her for he believes she is like his mother who left when he was a young boy. eventually at the end both realize they both have fallen in love with each other.

Great story

Liked the book very much, although it ended too abruptly. I'm a fan of Bobbi Smith's writing and this one doesn't disappoint. Would definitely recommend to others who like this genre.
