On Christmas Eve, a poor peasant woman has nothing for her children for Christmas. She can only buy a spool of thread for mending and a meager soup bone at the market. When the children are tucked into bed, she fetches a small tree from the forest but later falls asleep making sewing patterns for ornaments. As fortune would have it, the tree is the home of a mother spider and her children. Feeling a kinship with the peasant, the mother spider covers the tree with beautiful spun patterns. Costanzas mix of warm colors and dense blue hues convey an old-world feeling, with both mothers wearing babushkas. Today, seeing a spider on Christmas will supposedly bring good fortune for a whole year. The parallel stories in this lesser-known Christmas tale emphasize the selflessness of a mother’s love. Christmas Spider Miracle

This is a wonderful childrens Christmas story about the "Christmas Spider" and a Mother's love for her children along with the sadness of having no money for gifts. It tells the story how one mother helps out another to make Christmas special for the children. Why it is good luck to place a Spider ornament on your tree is revealed.

A great story for the family

I picked this book up at the library and I am glad I did. It's a Ukrainian tale and it has such deep meaning in this age of more more more. It's a simple tall of sharing what you have and helping someone out. It was a beautiful book to share with my family at Christmas.

As you might expect, nothing but woe befalls the unlucky Baudelaire orphans in the eighth grim tale in Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events that began with The Bad Beginning. Ever since the orphans' photographs were plastered across the front page of The Daily Punctilio in an article falsely accusing them of murder, they have been on the run. Only when they disguise themselves as cheerful hospital volunteers (Volunteers Fighting Disease, to be exact), do they see a possible refuge. Of course, this backfires hideously. Where is their ineffectual guardian, Mr. Poe, when they need him most? Will the evil, greedy Count Olaf be successful in giving poor Violet a cranioectomy at the Heimlich Hospital? Is a heart-shaped balloon really better than water for a thirsty patient? Is no news really good news? As ever, Snicket refuses to comfort young readers with cozy answers and satisfying escapes. And, as ever, there are plenty of rusty blades and horrible plot twists to make us shudder and shameless-but-hilarious wordplay to make us grimace happily. Bring on the next one! Gr 4-7-Another roller coaster of perils for the three Baudelaire children. This time, they search for clues concerning their parents' deaths and attempt to clear themselves of a false murder charge while being pursued by the evil Count Olaf, who is after the family fortune. While attempting to escape arrest, the siblings join a volunteer group that sings and brings good cheer to patients and enter Heimlich Hospital, where they soon find themselves working in the Library of Records. A picture with an important clue surfaces just as Olaf's girlfriend discovers them and captures Violet, who is then readied for a cranioectomy, a surgery in which the head must be removed. The trio's talents are put to good use in a daring escape from the burning hospital. They jump into Olaf's car trunk in search of more clues and position themselves for the next exciting sequel. Readers will enjoy cheering for the clever youngsters, booing the diabolical villains, and noting the many new clues. The narrator's active voice is forever teasing readers by taking them to the edge of their seats and then purposely switching the subject or suggesting they stop reading all together. This volume can stand alone but few will be able to resist reading the next installment after the cliff-hanger ending.

Gr. 4-6. The Baudelaire orphans squeak through another darkly amusing, nightmarish adventure in the eighth of the projected 13 volumes of A Series of Unfortunate Events. In this episode, the children try to learn more about their situation, their parents, and the mysterious Jacques Snicket while being pursued by Count Olaf and his nefarious cohorts, who topple file cabinets to flatten the kids, threaten to cut off anesthetized Violet's head, and trap the children in a burning building. Though the children escape, they are last seen in the trunk of Count Olaf's car, hurtling toward whatever destiny awaits in volume nine. Narrator Snicket is in fine form here, telling the siblings' story while dropping hints about his own dark past and offering entertaining asides, miscellaneous information, and at least one admirable pun. Perfectly capturing the atmosphere of the stories, Helquist's stylized pencil sketches are among his best yet. Carolyn Phelan

Great series, highly recommend

My kid loves these books. As a parent I have tried to instill the love of reading into my son and it has gotten easier overtime and we are reaping the benefits of the improved reading. Sometimes it was difficult to match the content level with his advanced reading level in addition to his interest in the content itself, however these books have seemed to be a perfect storm of sorts. He is 9 but reading at a 12th grade level and it wasn't until this series that we really saw a passion for reading show, he always liked it and did it daily but never sought it out as feverishly as he did with this series, he is sharing the story with us in addition to laughing and enjoying himself. I highly recommend them and we now own them all.

Jim had recited this publicly in Spring 1969 at poetry readings with his friend who encouraged publishing his works privately, beat poet Michael McClure. The long-form poem first appeared in print as an untitled poem at the conclusion of Jerry Hopkins' Rolling Stone interview of Morrison in Issue #38 July 26, 1969 - Jim's private edition a year later was almost identical. On his last birthday, Dec 8, 1970, Jim recorded three hours of his poetry with friends Frank & Kathy Lisciandro, Alan Ronay, a swedish girl, and a fifth of Irish whiskey presented to Jim by studio engineer John Haeny as a birthday gift. "An American Prayer" was among the selections Jim read from neatly typed pages he brought to the session. This recording headlined the posthumous 1978 LP album of the same name, credited to "Jim Morrison, Music By The Doors", along with other recordings from that night as well as another recording session in Mar '69. The CD was released by Elektra in 1995 with a few bonus tracks and a front-cover insert booklet that was a reprint in miniature of the 8-page libretto that graced early editions of the LP - the booklet is illustrated with photos and drawings by Jim, and concludes with the complete lyrics of the recorded "An American Prayer" which is more than 90% of Jim's privately published book with all its primal, albeit crude, imagery intact. The typeset and format is identical to the stanzas printed by Jim. If Elektra had the b*lls to publish Jim's words as written and spoken by him, then Zeppelin Publishing Company did not even have the cahonies - therefore only a 4-star rating from this reviewer.

"A B of A Company, Louisiana, Baton Rouge", Zeppelin published two editions Copyright 1984, one titled on the spine and the cover "AMERICAN PRAYER" JIM MORRISON - illustrated against a red background with what appears to be a landing eagle about to perch on a muscled adonis statue posed with its back to the viewer (The same illustration appears on the cover of another Zeppelin publication "Light My Fire"). The other edition has a white cover with only the printing "Jim Morrison's AN AMERICAN PRAYER" and the "Zeppelin...Rouge" inscription at the bottom. Both versions have the same ISBN 0-915628-46-5 identified here on Amazon.com. Interestingly a Publisher's Note inside begins "This is a collector's book", suggesting the optimal state of mind, reading methodology, and reader motivation, then closes with "It is a good book", followed by "COPYRIGHT 1984 The B of A Company as Trustee for the various Copyright interests: Jim Morrison, The Estate of Pamela Coursen (misspelled, should be Courson), Zeppelin Publishing Company, and others. The book has every left page fully illustrated with art and photos (even the closeted Jim Morrison TV picture from the Prayer LP inside gatefold) that often complement the stanza printed on the facing right page. The poetry is pretty much true to Jim's original except for a few harmless word omissions or preposition swaps, but there are a couple glaring edits that can only be interpreted as sanitizing censorship that must have registered on the Richter Scale near Pere Lachaise cemetary in Paris when first published. Words you know.

It is a short book, but the words are as powerful as you know them to be. His words don't define an era. They define a creed. A creed so strong that his albums sell more now than when they were released. His desparity his yurn for people to see the truth as he saw it. I can find myself. I can find myself in the choas of this world through his work. I like this book and his others. Great reading. I am surprised amazon could find it.

You should anotate that this joker out of Louisiana is NOT theJim Morrison from the Doors. He claims he is channeling Jim's words.He's just ripping people off. His publisher is B of A something or other, but it's a scam. Anyway, thanks for the time.

I could use more instruction, less talk/history but still a good book

A little too much about the Orchard behind the book but still a good source of information. You'll get some information on apples (that can sometimes be vague- it depends some on what you can get locally), tasting and lots of other details. Five types of cider mentioned- 1 I hadn't heard of before.
I'd like more detail on making the stuff and less on "appreciating" but you do get pictures to go with the text and lists of equipment. I did appreciate the information about diagnosing/dealing with problems.
Good book, you might want more detail than given here though,(might just be my opinion but I feel like there's validity to it).

Great Hobby for this Fall!!

A comprehensive overview of the home cider-making process, this book contains beautiful photographs and delivers clear and concise instructions on brewing your first batch of home cider. As an avid gardener in the spring and summer, I was looking for a new hobby to carry me through the colder months and after reading this book I am confident I have the knowledge I need to start my first batch of cider this coming fall. Thanks!

I hate to say it

Was hoping this book was going to be helpful, but it's not. Very limited information. Many pages have limited text. The information provided is general with limited specific details. If I could return - I would. Claude Jolicoeur's, The New Cider Maker's Handbook is the book to buy. I hate to say it, but save your money and pass on this one!

Robert W. Rydell is professor of history at Montana State University and served as John Adams Professor of American Civilization at the University of Amsterdam.

Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey (Frederick Douglass) was born a slave in Talbot County, Maryland. He took the name Douglass after escaping from the South in 1838.

As a leader in the abolitionist movement, Douglass was famed for his eloquent yet incisive political writing. And, like his near-contemporary, Booker T. Washington, understood the central importance of education in improving the lives of African Americans, and was therefore an early proponent of desegregation.

A firm believer in equal rights for all, Douglass attended a meeting of the National Council of Women in Washington, D.C., in the hours before his death in February 1895.
