I wasn't familiar with a case interview prior to reading this book, but now I feel like I'm better prepared for one if needed. Beyond the case interview, I think this book gives some good building blocks on how to solve problems (after all that's what consulting is, right?). I've seen and used many of these frameworks professionally without knowing them, specifically the internal/external framework. I've picked up a few more that I think will be useful as well. I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Great for business newbies!

Just thinking about consulting interviews made me anxious. I don't have a traditional business education and was intimidated by case interviews. good but not great

I am med-peds trained, practicing hospital and emergency medicine for both adults and kids. I have also practiced primary care. This book has pros and cons:

Pros:

Compact

Ringed binder allows you to leave out pages you don't need or add others to it (if you see adults and kids, you can put MGH's Pocket Medicine book along with these pages in one binder).

Contains some very good info in table and outline format

Cons:

Index is not very helpful (lists every page that mentions a topic even in passing, without letting the reader know which pages are devoted to the topic).

Missing important info (two examples: next to nothing for AAP neonatal jaundice guidelines, just refers you to the seminal Bhutani paper; a similar lack of info on indications for antibiotics in neonates...these are common, important clinical situations)

Pricey for the size

Much like the pocket medicine book we all love, this book contains all of the high-yield, easily-readable information you need to know to take care of your patients as a House Officer. While I have piles of medical books collecting dust, this is one of the four books I ACTUALLY use and one of the two books I keep in my pocket. It's weak in neonatology, but it makes up for it in PICU material. If it only had a few pages dedicated to medication dosing, I'd be leaving my Harriet at home. If I had to pick one book to carry with me, this would be it.

Great review and references on every topic. The most comprehensive and condensed book you can carry around. I would take it over my harriet lane any day.

A good reference

This is a good reference book on semiconductor physics, particularly on the basics. I will not suggest it for beginners though, but advanced graduate students may learn a lot of the basics, which they almost always think they know but actually do not. Examples juxtaposed with the text are helpful. But too much math many times obscure the physics that the book intends to teach. Nevertheless a good reference book for a library.

A Unique Classic

To me a good golf book has something new to offer, rather than a concise summary of what is known. A great book has more than one. This book has tons of new info. This book is nothing if it is not unique. From the full swing to the pitch shot to chipping and bunker play, Rodgers takes path less travelled.

Phil learned a lot from Paul Runyan and some of that has transferred into this book with the hands opposed putting and chipping grip. Bunker play and pitching however was quite unique. Late in Jack Nicklaus career he came to help from Phil Rodgers on chipping because he was known as one of the best. If you want a clear outline of the technique he taught to Nicklaus, this is the place to go. Stan Utley's straight on bunker technique has been talked about much recently, and the method outlined in this book is not terribly dissimilar.

The full swing underhanded motion and "hitting in the flat spot" is a unique aspect of this book, especially in the full swing. It is much more common to hear the hit down, hands ahead, create lag type jargon. Phil does not advise a leverage type action and timing a flail, but rather a one piece slam the door shut action ala Sam Snead. It's a great refreshing approach to the game and picking up this book is always rewarding for this golf nut.

Contrary to most books by playing professionals, this book is so much more than a simple rehash of fundamentals learned elsewhere. Its a great addition to any golf library.

I love Phil's pitch shot, bunker play and chipping method. Easy to learn and very forgiving. I have been using Phil's methods for 20 years and have total confidence pitching from 60 yards and in to 10 feet.

Through encounters in Group and at school, she begins to realize that all is not fine, even for seemingly perfect people. As the book ends, she is not completely cured but is beginning to learn how to deal with her grief in a more positive way by journaling and talking about her feelings. Friend combines believable characters and real-life situations into a fine novel that addresses common adolescent issues. This was a hard book for me to review because I had an eating disorder when I was a teenager. Only in those days there was no knowledge to be had of eating disorders let alone help and support. You were just told to go on a diet. I remember a particularly nasty one where I could only eat grapefruit, hardboiled eggs, plain toast, and salad without dressing. Yet I was determined to look good in my cinch waisted skirt with layers of petticoats like all the popular girls in school.

I'm sure this is how the protagonist Isabelle Lee in Perfect feels. You'd do anything to feel good, not only in your clothes, but inside your vulnerable self. Isabelle's eating disorder is Bulimia: eat, purge, eat, purge. How else can she cover her feelings about her father's death, her mother's denial of it, and her seeming lack of popularity in her eighth grade class? To her horror her younger sister discovers Isabelle vomiting. Her mother makes her go to an eating disorder group for girls her age. To her amazement the most popular girl in school, Ashley Barnum, is there in group as well. Ashley's disorder is that of taking laxatives. They bond together to go through the stages of recovery filled with distrust, shifting friendships, courage, and finally confidence. Along the way Isabelle helps her sister and her mother face their grief, just by being more sure of who she really is.

Eating disorders are all too common in younger and younger children in our society, ranging from rampant obesity to anorexia. Perfect describes in page turning novel form how young girls can find help and support in eating disorder groups where confidentiality, mentors, and understanding of their disorder offer deep encouragement and healing. This book can give young people insight into the nature of eating disorders through a compassionate story without at all being preachy.

Perfect is a most important, even landmark, book. Kudos to author Natasha Friend for writing such an insightful young adult novel. Perfect is highly recommended for children from 10 years and older. I wish I had it when I was young. It will also be a valuable aide in eating disorder groups and women's studies groups in high school. What a great starting point for discussions.

I really loved this book! Its about a thirteen year old girl named Isabelle Lee. Her father died about two years ago, and nothing has been okay since then. She has a depressed mother who cries herself to sleep and an annoying, lonely little sister. The thing is, nobody ever talks about the problems they have. Isabelle and her family try to pretend everything's always perfect, even when it's not. Sadness about her father leads Isabelle into binging and purging. When her little sister catches her making herself throw up, her mom makes her go to an eating disorder therapy group for teen girls. isabelle is shocked to see ashley, the most popular, "perfect" girl in school there. the two become good friends and they binge and purge together. Isabelle learns that Ashley's life is far from perfect. Even though Ashley seems so "together" on the outside, she struggles with body image, family issues, and schoolwork. I won't spoil the ending for you, but let's just say that Isabelle learns a lot of things. One, she learns that just because someone looks perfect on the outside, it doesn't always mean everything's okay for that person (like Ashley.) She also learns that saying everything is "fine" is just a coverup, and it's important to talk about things and not keep feelings bottled up. The author, Natalie Friend, is an incredible writer who seems to know exactly how teens think. Her words will make you laugh, cry, and pray for Natalie's family. I recommend this book for anyone in middle or high school. It's a really fantastic book!

Perfect was a very good read.

I read it in one day.

This novel probes the life of 13-year-old Isabelle, who is bulimic. Her father is dead. It seems her whole family is unstable. Her mother, although putting on a happy facade, cries at night for her dead husband. Her annoying sister is sad, too. Isabelle is also sad. It seems she is oppressed in expressing her feelings, though, which is why she chooses bulimia - as an outlet.

Isabelle is forced to go to Group - a group that helps people with eating disorders. To her shock, Ashley Barnum, the most popular girl in school, is also in Group. They develop a friendship that makes Isabelle learn more about who Ashley really is, and, ultimately, about herself.

This book is one book that you must read. Although it is geared towards younger teens, I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book about an eating disorder - and, not only that, but one of coming of age. This would also be a great book for parents to read.

The characters are real. You feel their emotions, and you are taken on a journey through Isabelle's life.

Honest and well-written, Perfect is a book that should be in every library's shelves.

Understand the audience before you purchase

I see other reviewers have already made my main complaint about this book. For a book that is supposed to focus on the User Experience in an authoritative manner, I find the titles and sub-titles very misleading... which leads to a bad user experience.

"Killer UX Design", "Wow your visitors", "The Complete Guide to Creating Compelling User-Centered Designs"

As a UI developer associated with a UX team, I think I understand the difference between UI and UX - with UI being one element of the broader UX, yet the way this book was named and presented led me to believe there would be a lot more focus on cool, modern UI concepts. In reality, while the case study UI is interesting, it's not ground-breaking, and makes up a very small portion of the book.

This is really a book about the UX design PROCESS, and the months of research done prior to doing any kind of UI or development. It is NOT a book about UI. There is not much here for the typical garage developer (although there are some very good nuggets of information to absorb).

However, if your team is robust enough to take on the discipline of formal up-front design, complete with methodologies for user testing, focus groups, market research, and all the rest, then this book is gold... well written, and full of great information.

So, for the right audience, this book earns a 4, or even 5 star rating. Had the name and descriptions properly reflected its true audience, I would happily give it the 4 or 5 star rating, but for the average developer, who might get excited by the title of this book, be warned that this probably isn't what you're looking for. So, based on my unexpected "user experience", I can't really justify more than a 3.

Introductory book; Clearly written.

Should be titled "Introduction to UX Research and Design Processes for Designers". "Killer UX Design" is hyped title. Begins with clear explanations on the necessity for collecting customers' needs information and goals, and takes the reader through the design process, always emphasizing the objectives of the initial collected information and goals. Written for designers to help them understand the business goals and the design process; not as much on the design itself. Very clearly written!

For beginners or refreshers only.

The problem with reviewing books of this nature is that it's purely subjective to the reader's experience.

I found the title, KILLER UX DESIGN, to be misleading. To me, "KILLER UX DESIGN" implies advanced techniques, processes and future UX trends. Instead, I got basic advice on how important it is to have meetings and case studies that discuss UX needs and advice to "Get My Stationary On." Hmm ... this strikes me as very fundamental--not "killer."

That's not to say there isn't useful information to be found here. In fact, if you're new to UX concepts and preparation, then this is actually a great starting place and very much on par with the "For Dummies" series in terms of comprehension. If you've been doing this for a while and you're looking for "killer" concepts, then you may find this reference to be as lackluster as I did.
