This unique look at health care interprets scriptures of the Bible and adapts and applies the wisdom found there to modern ways of life. These scriptures teach that the prevention of diseases is not in the hands of doctors, but rather in what individuals eat and how they live. Health-minded Americans will learn how to avoid the disease-causing preservatives, growth hormones, and pesticides of the meat and dairy industries that pollute the once-fresh foods that the public consumes. Also included is an in-depth discussion of Satan’s influence on the advertising industry and how it is linked to drug, cigarette, and alcohol addictions among the American people.

Blessings & Curses
By Jennifer L. HENRY
Dr. Kunjufu came to my church home and shared a wonderful sermon on health. This book is a blessing. Even though it is hard to break a lot of the in-breed eating habits from our parents and grandparents, Dr. Kumjufu gives us enough information for us to gradually break away from the old ways, and step into the new. He really makes you look at EVERYTHING you really don't pay attention, like wheat or dairy products or bee pollen! He bought to my attention a wonderful health scripture. Deut 30:19 where it says (paraphrased) I place before you blessings and curses, life and death, choose life. With the help of this book, you can begin to REALLY choose life.

I now understand my purpose!
By Jennibean
I choose this book because I was on a quest to research a gift I believe God gave me. And thanks to the author I understand sooo much clearer now why it's important to understand why God's Spirit gives each believer certain gifts. I would MOST certainly recommend this book to anyone seriously trying to understand their purpose and why God put them here. It might be a good idea to have in mind what one would think their gifts are.

I have several points I would like to make
By Polly
I have several points I would like to make.

Point 1: I love Ms. E's books for 3 reasons - humor (she really tickles my funny bone), story line (how many ways can you really write a romance? She comes up with some good ones), and the h's are virtuous (so sick and tired of the H/h being promiscuous). This book failed 2 out of those 3. It had no humor (didn't laugh once) and it promoted adultery. Which brings me to my next point...........

Point 2: There's dumb, there's ignorant, and then there is stupid. Sasha was S-T-U-P-I-D! 2 separate times she went to tell the H she wanted a divorce. She could've done two things. She could've easily sold some of her jewelry, flown to England, hired an attorney and divorced him without him knowing until he was served with divorce papers OR hired an attorney online, explained her circumstances of not being able to leave Greece and gone on from there. She had enough grounds (all of his mistresses, being abandoned and isolated in a foreign country) to do so. But no -- what did she do? She confronts him. She ought to have had a Plan A, a Plan B, and a Plan C. Did she? Of course not, which brings me to my next point...........

Point 3: She knew his personality and that the only reason he married her was to gain back HIS ancestral home. The H is very possessive, what belongs to him, remains with him and she ought to have KNOWN he would feel the same way about her. She belongs to HIM and only HIM. Doesn't matter that he didn't want her. Like I said, she's stupid. What does she do? Goes on with her life like he's just going to let her go off into the sunset. So...the next day she left him to go to the church for a town meeting, leaving him alone in HIS house. Again, she ought to have known he would wander around HIS home trying to piece things together. Of course, he found her computer, and of course, it wasn't password protected, so he went in and discovered her illegal employment. Of course, she didn't know what she was doing was illegal and, of course, she ought to have known he would use it against her, blackmailing her to stay with him. It would've been really nice if she called his bluff. Did she? Absolutely not. She's a stupid doormat after all. Oh, excuse me. She did attempt to leave him once. All she did was ask the postman to drive her to the next town over, but once she got there, she didn't know what to do. On to the next point..............

Point 4: Uncle Charles is in the hospital and all of them (Scarlett, Damon, Grayson, Harrison, Malik, and Stefan) are with him. He proceeds to have a mild come-to-Jesus talk. He starts with Damon and berates him for the way he has treated his wife (right on!) and then asked him how he would feel if Scarlett was married and her husband treated her like that. Damon didn't like that. Oh, boo, hoo, hoo. I liked this part, but wished he had really flayed him alive. ***INSERT*** He and/or Scarlett could have gotten to know Sasha, become friends with her, supported her, and helped her. But they didn't. By not doing so, indirectly they supported his treatment of her. Charles could've pointed out that in America abandoning and isolating one's wife like he did is a criminal offense and Sasha could easily have divorced him without his permission or knowledge because of being abandoned and due to all of his mistresses. IF he had gotten to know Sasha, he could've pointed out that (now this is assuming some things and I could be wrong) she has never had a date, never had a boyfriend, never been kissed, never been to college (I'm assuming she did online courses in order to get her degree), never been in a study group, never gone out with girlfriends for a ladies night out. She really missed doing a lot of things most 18- to 24-year-olds do. That Damon got to do. I think if Charles had said this last bit, it would've really, really driven home the point he was trying to make to Damon, because Damon doesn't think he has done anything wrong. He feels justified in doing what he did. But alas and alack, none of that happened. Just another disappointment with this book. Last point............

Point 5: At the end during the making up scene, he tells her he was taking out his anger for her grandfather on her, that he was "content to just let things go and find my women outside of our marriage." He felt her cringe and THEN he finally states he's sorry. He ruins his apology by qualifying it when he states, "but you were too young anyway." What kind of apology is that? He never shows any remorse or empathy for her. She doesn't make him grovel or have any consequences for his deplorable actions. Nothing, nada, zip! She rates right up there with some of Ms.E's other spineless h's.

In typical Ms. E fashion, this book was an easy read, but shallow. At no time is it mentioned they discussed their upbringing, how she came to know her grandfather, that her mother died from cancer, or if she even attended her mother's funeral. It doesn't mention Damon telling her about his boarding school days, his best friends (at the end he briefly mentions them), or his home life. There are so many unattached "strings" in Ms. E's books, that the reader is left dangling, wondering about this and that without ever getting some relief.

Only one error that I noticed. In the beginning of the book, Damon mentioned his assistant buys two of everything (jewelry, that is). One goes to his current mistress and the other goes to his wife. He gets mad when he discovers all of his gifts to his wife are all jumbled in a dresser drawer, many unopened. He is offended by this and points it out to her. She picks up an unopened box and tells him what's inside w/o having to open it. When he finds out how she can do this, he thinks to himself that he did not know his assistant gave his wife the same gift as his mistresses and that he is going to have to talk to her. Well, yes he did know this. Oops, minor error on Ms. E's part. Oh, that brings up another point - does he ever buy her a pearl necklace after ripping hers off of her neck, something that is more to her liking? Who knows. It's never mentioned.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, because you never know, you might be the only one who does like it. I sincerely hope the next 4 are a whole lot better than this flop!

disappointed....
By tia v
I was anxiously anticipating this book and I feel let down. He showed no respect or even love for the heroine. He was ready to settle down and he conveniently had a wife with which to settle down with. As always, he used sex to get what he wanted and the spineless heroine melted at his touch. I would have at least liked to have seen the hero brought down a notch or even beg a little for forgiveness but no he just did what he wanted. He showed more love and respect toward his "sister" than his wife! I hope the rest of the series is better because this book is not her best work.

Wanted to Love it
By G TK-Baker
I wanted to love this as I loved the introduction story and all it's characters.
Sadly, I could not forgive Damon his infidelity and at no point during the whole story did he ever show any remorse for his appalling behavior. I believe marriage is sacred therefore I really struggled with this story.
As for Sasha - she was just too much of a push over for my taste. I really was hoping she could humble Damon but instead she just lay back and took all his manipulations.
I own, love & have read many times all of Ms Lennox books and would still highly recommend this author.

Veitch and Kennedy's Classic Afterlife War Story Resonates Now More Than Ever
By Michael K. Beidler
As the author of this book's Foreword (a job for which I was *not* paid), you can read my personal views regarding "The Light and Darkness War" in the opening pages of this wonderful collection. I do, however, want to take this opportunity to highlight an excellent independent review, written by Jason Wilkes of Broken Frontier, with which I wholeheartedly agree:

"The Light and Darkness War"
Veitch and Kennedy's Classic Afterlife War Story Resonates Now More than Ever
~ reviewed by Jason Wilkins / June 4, 2015 ~

"The Light and Darkness War" (Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy; Titan Comics)

A haunting rumination on the horrors of war from the perspective of those who have the most to lose, this reissue of the original Epic Comics limited series remains a poignant reminder that even at its darkest, lowest ebb, the human spirit can always find a way to cling to hope.

In some ways, I guess I've been waiting to review this otherworldly war saga by Tom Veitch ("Star Wars: Dark Empire," "Animal Man") and Cam Kennedy ("2000 AD," "Star Wars: Dark Empire") ever since it first came out under the aegis of Marvel's critically acclaimed Epic Comics imprint in 1988.

This is a work that's stayed with me for over two decades. The list of books that have managed to have that kind of lasting impact on me is dreadfully short. At the time, there wasn't really anything else like "The Light and Darkness War" on the shelves (in North America, at least), and I was immediately entranced by its lurid depiction of a brutal never-ending conflict at the edge of forever.

On the surface, the exploits of Vietnam vet Lazarus Jones and his comrades in the Light Gang comprise a gut-wrenching, action-packed war story full of bombast and bravado. Truth be told, there aren't any wallflowers in the Light Gang. Engle, Huff, Slaw, and Jones are true warriors, forged in the steamy jungles of Southeast Asia, fighting a war nobody wanted them to win.

When their Huey is shot down outside Da Nang in 1969, the entire chopper crew, with the exception of Lazarus, transmigrate to an alternate universe collectively dreamt into being by generations of human warriors as a kind of intergalactic Valhalla eternally desperate for new recruits.

This central conceit — that the afterlife is a Jungian jumble of interconnected pocket universes — serves as the foundation for Veitch and Kennedy's extensive world-building, informing and driving the events of the series.

Plagued by a war of attrition lasting over ten thousand years, the Light Galaxy doesn't simply serve as a new battlefield for Earth's combat dead. It's also home to countless indigenous races, including the Menteps, who act as living engines for the distinctive, rugged stone ships that are the primary war machines for the forces of Light.

Each issue of the series opens with an excerpt from the Mentep holy book, serving to frame the narrative and add yet another layer of depth to an already richly textured fictional world. It is this level of thought and detail that sets "The Light and Darkness War" apart from the books of the day and still pushes it head and shoulders above much of its competition today.

For a teenaged comic book fan brought up on a steady diet of Marvel and DC, a work of this sophistication and craft was a revelation. Initially drawn into the series by Kennedy's innovative layouts, gruff and gritty rendering, and luminous color palette, it wasn't until many years later that I could truly appreciate Veitch's contribution to the book's development.

Don't get me wrong. I knew what good comics writing was even back then. I just didn't have the critical tools or the maturity to truly appreciate the craft and passion poured into the creation of this harrowing, existential war story.

Drawing on a background in underground comix, beat poetry, and activism, Veitch constructed the mechanics of "The Light and Darkness War" around his own ever-evolving personal beliefs and a desperate need to come to terms with a morally questionable war that had decimated a generation of Americans physically and spiritually.

Written at a time when Vietnam vets were still marginalized and vilified as “babykillers”, Veitch created a world tailor-made to celebrate their bravery and unique skillsets, even if — especially if — they were drawn from a conflict they didn't necessarily believe in.

Veitch goes into more detail about his motivations in the new collected edition's back matter, but if it seems counter-intuitive for a war protester to create a work that celebrates armed combat, then you're missing the point.

"The Light and Darkness War" is not a story about guns, bombs, and the horror of conflicts we barely understand. It's a story about how we treat one another after all the fighting and killing is done.

Tom Veitch is an amazing writer who doesn't seem to get the credit he deserves. Look up all he did to move Star Wars along. Awesome, 60's flavored novel.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up—Fans of Percy Jackson and "Kane Chronicles" (both, Disney-Hyperion) books will not be disappointed in Riordan's newest series, which is based on Norse mythology. Magnus Chase, 16, has been an orphan living on the streets of Boston for the past two years. Ever since the mysterious death of his mother, he has tried to stay ahead of anyone who might be looking for him. When his Uncle Randolph tracks him down and begins talking about his birthright—an ancient sword—Magnus's world changes forever. But Randolph is not the only one searching for the sword. A Fire Giant destined to wield it as part of doomsday is hot on their trail. Dying and winding up at the Hotel Valhalla is only the beginning of this teen's (after)life. With an epic plot, engaging (and diverse) characters, and tons of wisecracking humor, Riordan's latest is a page-turner. Those new to the author's past series can jump right in; fans of his previous works will be happy to see clever nods and references to the other in-universe books. VERDICT Ravenous Riordan fans are likely to begin lining up for this on the publication date; be prepared for long holds lists on this one.—Patrick Tierney, Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School, Providence, RI

Hooray! Norse Mythology
By College Stealth
I’m a huge Rick Riordan fan and I’ve been waiting for this book for a while, those who have been waiting as well won’t be disappointed. I’m personally impressed; I know that the structure of the story is going to be similar to others of Riordan, but even with the structure similar, it’s still a page turner, but this time in the context of Norse mythology. It initially appears to be a long book, but, it is an easy read that goes fast; I didn’t want to put it down and read it in one night.

For those who are not familiar with Rick Riordan’s writings, this is a perfectly fine book to jump into Riordan’s fantasy world, there is no benefit gained in having read his other books that deal with heroes from Greek, Roman, or Egyptian mythology. The characters stand alone in their identities and are all affiliated with Norse mythology. The protagonist, Magnus, is quickly discovered in the story to have a background not quite like others, more so in his parenting and lineage; his father is a Norse god. As a result of this lineage, there are obligations that Magnus is thrust with, and the story is a modern day interaction of Magnus through components of Norse mythology, ranging from characters to weaponry of the ancient belief system. The story is told with humor, but also does a great job in outlining and establishing some of the belief systems of Norse mythology, such as the pantheon of the gods and goddesses.

The characters have a different personality, much like those we meet out of Camp Jupiter vs. Camp Half Blood. The story takes place in Norse mythology, which I personally do not have as strong of a familiarity with, and allowed for a new sense of novelty in the story that has the format of hero discovered, hero goes to “camp,” and hero goes on quest. The introduction of the new characters was nice and it created a sense of anticipation about who maybe a bit more friendly than others. Overall, the relationship with the gods themselves is a bit more casual, even if the society itself is more regimented.

A discussion board commenter alluded to the possibility of a relationship between these books and that with Camp Half-Blood, from the start of the book there is a pleasant surprise in that Magnus does have a cousin who attends Camp Half-Blood, but rather than long-term interaction with him/her, there is just a brief reference too at both the beginning and the end of the story.

It’s a hard story to talk about because of the potential to give so much away about who is related to who, and familiarity with some of the Norse gods would reveal some of the plot elements. However, a unique aspect of the Norse mythology is that the fates of the gods are much clearer, with a level of clarity and absolutism in the roles that each one knows that he/she plays, even in the final battle (Ragnok  which isn’t the final battle in this book).

Know that the structure is similar to the books in the past, the characters who are introduced throughout this book are unique in their own ways, especially Magnus’s new companions and, I especially enjoyed the history and sense of honor associated with the Valkyrie corps, especially Samirah al-Abbas, who identifies from a Muslim family.

Anyway, enjoy a way! I have some Norse mythology to learn about now that I’m curious.

Is this the same Rick Riordan?
By Prentiss Grassmyer
I don't understand. I love the Percy Jackson books. I would go so far to say that I find them better than Harry Potter. So when I found out that he was writing another series using Norse Mythology, I was totally on board. This book was awful. I couldn't even finish it. It was soooo boring. It just seemed like a poor man's version of Percy Jackson, following the same essential plotline beat for beat. It also seems to me that Rick Riordan has a checklist of minorities that he felt the need to shoehorn into this book. In Percy Jackson the diversity was totally organic and added another layer to what were already very well written characters, but in Magnus Chase it feels like blatant tokenism. Like Riordan sat down to write and went, "Hm, what haven't I used? How about a Muslim? Done. Anybody writing about deaf/mutes? Better throw one of them in there."
The only even remotely interesting bit was when Annabeth showed up for a couple seconds. I'm starting to think that Percy Jackson was a fluke.

So Asgard is really cool and all and it was interesting to explore Viking mythology. But on the flip side the plot of this book is pretty much the same as the first Percy Jackson book. Magnus/Percy is living his normal but depressing life when all of a sudden he is involved in a big fight in Boston/New York. In the aftermath he goes to a special place for special people like him Valhalla/Camp Half Blood. There he meets a girl Sam/Annabeth with some problems of her own and some magical creatures to help him on his quest. Then there is a super mysterious prophecy resulting in Magnus/Percy leaving on their quest to save the world. What follows is a series of fetch quests for McGuffins from various Gods reminiscent of the Pearls of Persephone in Percy Jackson. Eventually after a series of disjointed magical adventures they basically just show up and save the world. Strangely Magnus plays almost no role in the final battle, in fact his sword flys around and does most of the fighting on its own, so he just kind of sits there with sad feelings. But never fear, they are victorious and return home for some quest rewards that magically solve everyone's problems... woohoo!

I feel that this book falls into a Riordan style that is becoming more and more obvious. Basically the book is just a series of disjointed adventures that explore mythology. Every few chapters are basically little novellas strung together by the fact that at the end of each the characters get a McGuffin (a little object that serves no other purpose but to allow them to move onto the next self contained novella). This is lazy writing and was particularly obvious back towards the end of his Roman Gods series where there were so many characters that each one got their own little chapter with a challenge uniquely suited to their skills. This book is similar except that there are fewer characters so the style isn't as obvious. Still though, it would be nice if he could eventually move beyond the level of writing that feels like playing an old video game. Walk a little ways, defeat monster, walk further solve puzzle, walk further defeat more monsters, ect. It's starting to get stale. I give it three stars for being a decent read but the plot is getting old and I would appreciate a new one sometime.

Never at Rest: A Biography of Isaac Newton (Cambridge Paperback Library), by Richard S. Westfall

This richly detailed 1981 biography captures both the personal life and the scientific career of Isaac Newton, presenting a fully rounded picture of Newton the man, the scientist, the philosopher, the theologian, and the public figure. Professor Westfall treats all aspects of Newton's career, but his account centres on a full description of Newton's achievements in science. Thus the core of the work describes the development of the calculus, the experimentation that altered the direction of the science of optics, and especially the investigations in celestial dynamics that led to the law of universal gravitation.

Review
"The hallmarks are impeccable detail and clarity...The copious footnotes, for example, generally refer to original manuscripts, letters and memoranda that are out of reach of most students and scholars. The superb quality of this book promises to give it a prominent place in the modern scholarly literature about Isaac Newton." David L. Heiserman, Science Books & Films

"Although there have been other biographies of Newton in the past, this is the first one to be based on an extensive use of the manuscript sources. It is more than merely the biography of a man and an account of the development of his ideas. It is a fundamental resource work on the Scientific Revolution, a work that should be on the shelves of every scholar interested in the main currents of ideas of the seventeenth century or any aspects of the early history of modern science." American Historical Review

"...this biography is to be applauded and recommended...we must all read Westfall's biography and admire it..." Eighteenth-Century Studies

"...fills a decided gap in modern history of science and stands in the very first rank of our advancing understanding of one of the world's greatest geniuses...we must all owe an incalculable scholarly debt to this outstanding book. Westfall's confrontation with Newton's manuscripts, an act of historical integrity that involved sustained and arduous labour for many years, opens up dimensions of Newton's restless genius which we had never before suspected." Ambix

"This must be one of the best biographies ever penned." Spaceflight

"Here at last is a Newton in whom we can believe...In short, this is as complete a biography as modern scholarship can provide." The Observatory

"No private library of an educated person should be without it on the shelf." Industrial Mathematics

Superb
By R. Albin
A first rate biography should include a good description of the important achievements of the subject, give a good sense of the subject's personality, provide the appropriate historic context in which to view the subject, be well written, and have good documentation. Westfall's biography of Newton is first-rate in all these dimensions. Newton is arguably the most important person in modern history. His work inaugurates both modern mathematics and modern physics. His achievements as a physicist set the pattern not only for physics but also for the other natural sciences. Newton's impact in larger culture extended also beyond the world of sciences. The historian of religion George Marsden wrote that Newton was the most important individual in the founding of the 18th century Enlightenment. Though Newton cannot be considered a member of that movement, his example of demonstrating universal natural laws understandable by human reason was immensely influential in European intellectual culture.

Westfall provides a detailed chronological account of Newton's life that covers all his major (and minor) achievements and is simply excellent at integrating the relevant historical background information. As Westfall writes, we regard Newton as a scientist and the emphasis in on Newton's career as a working scientist and mathematician. But, this is described very clearly within the context of late 17th century Europe. Westfall, for example, devotes ample pages to Newton's study of alchemy and theology. Since Newton spent a large fraction of his life working in these areas, it would be imposing an anachronistic perspective to minimize attention to these topics. Westfall is excellent at describing both the intellectual and social milieu in which Newton functioned. The sections detailing the history of mathematics and physics of Newton's important predecessors and contemporaries are first-rate, particularly his analysis of the impact of Descartes analytical geometry and mechanistic philosophy. His descriptions of 17th century Cambridge, with its concentration of pseudo-academic placemen, and of the generally patronage driven world of Caroline Britain are excellent. Never at Rest provides a vivid impression of the nature of scientific work in Newton's time. Westfall does not shirk from presenting complex mathematical and physical topics. These sections are tough going for those who don't recall a lot of math and physics but very worthwhile because they give an excellent sense of Newton's transforming effects on these disciplines.

Westfall delineates Newton's difficult personality very well and is fair in dealing with the numerous conflicts in which Newton became enmeshed, particularly the famous priority dispute with Leibnitz. Some of Newton's behavior is shown also to have stemmed from unexpected sources. Newton's theological researches led him to the conclusion that much accepted Christian theology is wrong and he had to conceal his Arianism and anti-Trinitarianism for much of his life. Some of Newton's achievements are shown as stemming from unexpected sources also. Westfall shows that Newton's alchemical researches, with their rather mystical element, probably contributed to freeing him from dogmatic mechanistic philosophy and facilitated his development of the idea of a universal, intrinsic gravitational force.

Newton is a fascinating figure and this biography will remain the standard for the foreseeable future.

A magnificent book about a great life
By A Customer
This is a remarkable biography because it so thoroughly tells the story of Sir Isaac Newton in all its various aspects. Newton's determination to know, his science (breathtaking science, his awesome brilliance), the religious and alchemical investigations, the cranky aloofness, are all carefully and fully drawn; by the end of the book, you feel, along with the author, that you have got to know the subject (at least to the extent one might get to know the great man).
This is a great biography, because it is so detailed, so in depth and so successful at bringing Newton in view. It is also likely that it will for many years surpass any other biography of Newton because of its thoroughness.
I think it is worth reading not only because the reader learns so much about the science and life of one of history's great thinkers, and to some extent how he thought, but also because the reader gains an appreciation of the hard work of invention even for one so gifted as Newton, and some insight into the hard work of turning observations into theoretical constructs.
A magnificent biography.

This is the most authorative biograghy of Newton, the greatest genius of all time!! No need to add more words to praise him. Though the book runs over 900 pages, you would be reading the book breathless until the last page!!! ( similar view from other readers. )

Not that great
By Gryffin
I usually look forward to reading Amber Kell's books but this story was only just okay. The storyline was pretty ordinary and the jumping back and forward between Charlie's and Marcus's viewpoints was plain irritating. Although I didn't feel that I wasted my money I probably wont buy any more of this particular series instead I'll stick to Amber's other series which are much better.

Helmet for My Pillow: From Parris Island to the Pacific, by Robert Leckie

Here is one of the most riveting first-person accounts ever to come out of World War II. Robert Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Helmet for My Pillow we follow his odyssey, from basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war’s fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifices of war, painting an unvarnished portrait of how real warriors are made, fight, and often die in the defense of their country.

From the live-for-today rowdiness of marines on leave to the terrors of jungle warfare against an enemy determined to fight to the last man, Leckie describes what war is really like when victory can only be measured inch by bloody inch. Woven throughout are Leckie’s hard-won, eloquent, and thoroughly unsentimental meditations on the meaning of war and why we fight. Unparalleled in its immediacy and accuracy, Helmet for My Pillow will leave no reader untouched. This is a book that brings you as close to the mud, the blood, and the experience of war as it is safe to come.

Now producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman, the men behind Band of Brothers, have adapted material from Helmet for My Pillow for HBO’s epic miniseries The Pacific, which will thrill and edify a whole new generation.

Chapter One

Boot

A cutting wind slanted up Church Street in the cheerless dawn of January 5, 1942. That day I departed for the United States Marines.

The war with Japan was not yet four weeks old, Wake Island had fallen. Pearl Harbor was a real tragedy, a burning bitter humiliation. Hastily composed war songs were on the lips of everyone, their heavy patriotism failing to compensate for what they lacked in tune and spirit. Hysteria seemed to crouch behind all eyes.

But none of this meant much to me. I was aware of my father beside me, bending into the wind with me. I could feel the wound in my lower regions, still fresh, still sore. The sutures had been removed a few days earlier.

I had sought to enlist the day after Pearl Harbor, but the Marines had insisted that I be circumcised. It cost me a hundred dollars, although I am not sure to this day whether I paid the doctor or not. But I am certain that few young men went off to war in that fateful time so marked.

We had come across the Jersey meadows, riding the Erie commuter line, and then on the ferry over the Hudson River to downtown New York. Breakfast at home had been subdued. My mother was up and about; she did not cry. It was not a heart-rending leave-taking, nor was it brave, resolute—any of those words that fail to describe the thing.

It was like so much else in this war that was to produce unbounded heroism, yet not a single stirring song: it was resigned. She followed me to the door with sad eyes and said, “God keep you.”

It had been a silent trip across the meadows and it was a wordless good-by in front of the bronze revolving doors at Ninety, Church Street. My father embraced me quickly, and just as quickly averted his face and left. The Irish doorman measured me and smiled.

I went inside and joined the United States Marines.

The captain who swore us in reduced the ceremony to a jumble. We all held up our hands. We put them down when he lowered his. That way we guessed we were marines.

The master gunnery sergeant who became our momentary shepherd made the fact plainer to us. Those rich mellow blasphemous oaths that were to become so familiar to me flowed from his lips with the consummate ease of one who had spent a lifetime in vituperation. I would meet his masters later. Presently, as he herded us across the river to Hoboken and a waiting train, he seemed to be beyond comparison. But he was gentle and kind enough when he said good-by to the thirty or forty of us who boarded the train.

He stood at the head of our railroad car—a man of middle age, slender, and of a grace that was on the verge of being ruined by a pot belly. He wore the Marine dress blues. Over this was the regulation tight-fitting overcoat of forest green. Green and blue has always seemed to me an odd combination of colors, and it seemed especially so then; the gaudy dark and light blue of the Marine dress sheathed in sedate and soothing green.

“Where you are going it will not be easy,” the gunnery sergeant said. “When you get to Parris Island, you’ll find things plenty different from civilian life. You won’t like it! You’ll think they’re overdoing things. You’ll think they’re stupid! You’ll think they’re the cruelest, rottenest bunch of men you ever ran into! I’m going to tell you one thing. You’ll be wrong! If you want to save yourself plenty of heartache you’ll listen to me right now: you’ll do everything they tell you and you’ll keep your big mouths shut!”

He could not help grinning at the end. No group of men ever had a saner counselor, and he knew it; but he could not help grinning. He knew we would ignore his every word.

“Okay, Sarge,” somebody yelled. “Thanks, Sarge.”

He turned and left us.

We called him “Sarge.” Within another twenty-four hours we would not dare address a lowly Pfc. without the cringing “sir.” But today the civilian shine was still upon us. We wore civvies; Hoboken howled around us in the throes of trade; we each had the citizen’s polite deprecation of the soldier, and who among us was not certain that he was not long for the ranks?

Our ride to Washington was silent and uneventful. But once we had arrived in the capital and had changed trains the atmosphere seemed to lift. Other Marine recruits were arriving from all over the east. Our contingent was the last to arrive, the last to be crammed aboard the ancient wooden train that waited, puffing, dirty-in-the-dark, smelling of coal—waited to take us down the coast to South Carolina. Perhaps it was because of the dilapidated old train that we brightened and became gay. Such a dingy, tired old relic could not help but provoke mirth. Someone pretended to have found a brass plate beneath one of the seats, and our car rocked with laughter as he read, “This car is the property of the Philadelphia Museum of American History.” We had light from kerosene lamps and heat from a potbellied stove. Draughts seemed to stream from every angle and there was a constant creaking and wailing of wood and wheels that sounded like an endless keening. Strange old train that it was, I loved it.

Comfort had been left behind in Washington. Some of us already were beginning to revel in the hardship of the train ride. That intangible mystique of the marine was somehow, even then, at work. We were having it rough, which is exactly what we expected and what we had signed up for. That is the thing: having it rough. The man who has had it roughest is the man to be most admired. Conversely, he who has had it the easiest is the least praiseworthy.

Those who wished to sleep could cat-nap on the floor while the train lurched down through Virginia and North Carolina. But these were few. The singing and the talk were too exciting.

The boy sitting next to me—a handsome blond-haired youth from south Jersey—turned out to have a fine high voice. He sang several songs alone. There being a liberal leavening of New York Irish among us, he was soon singing Irish ballads.

Across the aisle there was another boy, whom I shall call Armadillo because of his lean and pointed face. He was from New York and had attended college there. Being one of the few college men present, he had already established a sort of literary clique.

The Armadillo’s coterie could not equal another circle farther down the car. This had at its center a stocky, smiling redhead. Red had been a catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals and had once hit a home run at the Polo Grounds off the great Carl Hubbell.

There was no measuring the impact of such a celebrity on our group, composed otherwise of mediocrities like myself. Red had been in the big time. He had held daily converse with men who were nothing less than the idols of his newfound comrades. It was quite natural they should ring him round; consult him on everything from pitching form to the Japanese General Staff.

“Whaddya think it’ll be like at Parris Island, Red?”

“Hey, Red—you think the Japs are as tough as the newspapers say they are?”

It is an American weakness. The success becomes the sage. Scientists counsel on civil liberty; comedians and actresses lead political rallies; athletes tell us what brand of cigarette to smoke. But the redhead was equal to it. It was plain in his case what travel and headlines can do. He was easily the most poised of us all.

But I suspect even Red’s savoir-faire got a rude jolt when we arrived in Parris Island. We had been taken from the railroad station by truck. When we had dismounted and had formed a motley rank in front of the red brick mess hall, we were subjected to the classic greeting.

“Boys,” said the sergeant who would be our drill instructor. “Boys—Ah want to tell yawl something. Give youah hearts to Jesus, boys—cause youah ass belongs to me!”

Then he fell us in after our clumsy civilian fashion and marched us into the mess hall.

There were baloney and lima beans. I had never eaten lima beans before, but I did this time; they were cold.

The group that had made the trip from New York did not survive the first day in Parris Island. I never saw the blond singer again, nor most of the others. Somehow sixty of us among the hundreds who had been aboard that ancient train, became a training platoon, were assigned a number and placed under the charge of the drill sergeant who had delivered the welcoming address.

Sergeant Bellow was a southerner with a fine contempt for northerners. It was not that he favored the southerners; he merely treated them less sarcastically. He was big. I would say six feet four inches, two hundred thirty pounds.

But above all he had a voice.

It pulsed with power as he counted the cadence, marching us from the administration building to the quartermaster’s. It whipped us, this ragged remnant, and stiffened our slouching civilian backs. Nowhere else but in the Marine Corps do you hear that peculiar lilting cadence of command.

“Thrip-faw-ya-leahft, thrip-faw-ya-leahft.”

It sounds like an incantation; but it is merely the traditional “three-four-your-left” elongated by the southern drawl, made sprightly by being sung. I never heard it done better than by our sergeant. Because of this, and because of his inordinate love of drill, I have but one image of him: striding stiff-backed a few feet apart from us, arms thrust out, hands clenched, head canted back, with the whole body following and the great voice ceaselessly bellowing, “Thrip-faw-ya-leahft, thrip-faw-ya-leahft.”

Sergeant Bellow marched us to the quartermaster’s. It was there we were stripped of all vestiges of personality. It is the quartermasters who make soldiers, sailors and marines. In their presence, one strips down. With each divestment, a trait is lost; the discard of a garment marks the quiet death of an idiosyncrasy. I take off my socks; gone is a propensity for stripes, or clocks, or checks, or even solids; ended is a tendency to combine purple socks with brown tie. My socks henceforth will be tan. They will neither be soiled, nor rolled, nor gaudy, nor restrained, nor holey. They will be tan. The only other thing they may be is clean.

So it is with it all, until one stands naked, struggling with an embarrassment that is entirely lost on the laconic shades who work in quartermaster sheds.

Within—in the depths the psychiatrists call subliminal—a human spark still sputters. It will never go quite out. Its vigor or its desuetude is in exact proportion to the number of miles a man may put between himself and his camp.

Profound and unique insight into the WWII Pacific experience
By Lori D. Smith
First, I must admit a particular regard for this book as the granddaughter of Bill Smith (whom Leckie refers to as 'Hoosier'), who served with Leckie in How Company. Leckie offers nuanced insight into the ways in which he and his friends understood national military service, the `enemy', and the war more generally, and how these perspectives or ideas evolved among the men from North Carolina to Guadalcanal, Australia, and New Britain. Leckie steers clear from prototypes or cliches; there is no enblematic enlisted man or officer. Rather, these men are treated as real people coping (or not) with the profound uncertainty of their situation.

Perhaps this appreciation says more about my own lack of experience with combat/warfare. Thinking of Guadalcanal from a macro or military history perspective, it is easy to take for granted that marines' objectives - and the most efficacious means to pursue them - were always apparent to those involved. In this context, Leckie's account of warfare as a learning process was deep, reflexive, and fascinating. For example, he describes: 1) the marines' first reactions to air battle and subsequent adjustment to air battle as a simple process of attrition; and 2) the uncertainty confronted by officers at various stages, against the backdrop of the US' limited military experience in the Pacific or in jungles more generally. In this way, Leckie also makes apparent the need - and efficacy - of severe hierarchy. For this reason, I think that reviewers' arguments positing a lack of regard for officers deserve qualification.

***UPDATE/REFLECTIONS***
Hoosier was wounded and evacuated early in the Battle of Peleliu; I believe that Chuckler and Runner were wounded later and evacuated with Leckie. Leckie and his friends stayed in touch - in the summer of 1985, my grandfather and his wife, as well as Runner (Juergens) and his wife, went to visit Leckie in New Jersey. There Leckie decidated a park in their honor, in honor of all marines who fought in the Pacific Theater (I uploaded a photo of the dedication plaque in the 'customer image gallery').

Although Hoosier never liked to share his experiences from the war, my father considers the book to be true to his character. And, while the HBO miniseries diverges considerably from the book, Hoosier's sense of humor appears true to form (the book provides far greater nuance and depth, different dialogue, and events unfolded differently). This edition of the book also includes a few photographs of Leckie, Runner, Hoosier, and others - some taken in their dress blues, and others on Guadalcanal.

That was victory

`Helmet for My Pillow" is a reissue from 1957. My one and only complaint is my usual one with reissues...please put in an updated introduction...tell us what has happened with the author or life, don't just reissue it and do nothing else. This will be made into a mini series which is probably the reason for the reissue. No matter what the reason it's definitely worth reading. Robert Leckie's descriptions create a picture; from his drill sergeant..." but above all he had a voice" to the exultation of leave in Australian after the battle of Guadalcanal. There are black and white pictures throughout the pages of the men he served with and of Leckie which definitely helps with the mind's pictures.

But most of all this book is remarkable. I have heard men describe their experiences with jungle warfare, both from WWII and Vietnam, but never with the awful clarity that is done in these pages. I grew up in the army and have been with the military all of my life and can agree with so much of what is said here, and said with far more ability than almost any other book I have read.
Leakie pulls no punches, not in the way many of the enlisted were treated by their officers or in his own `mistakes' that landed in him the brig.
Historically there is much in here that I have never read before, and I have read and listened to much. There are stories of the hunger the fighting men felt during battle and how Japanese forces would try to sneak into their camps at night for food. Then there are the descriptions of the `widow makers', trees that were weakened by artillery fire that killed 25 men as they broke and fell on them.
This is truly an incredible account, eye opening and worthy of your time and effort to read.

One of the best personal memoirs of war I have ever read. Leckie is brutally honest about anything and everything to do with his experiences in the 1st Marine Division during WWII. Incredibly impressed by his sensitive candor and philosophical reflections on the impact of war on human beings. Having been an officer myself, I was truly shocked to read his descriptions of Marine officers blatantly stealing from enlisted men. I guess in wartime, they were willing to let anyone become an officer. Leckie pulls no punches but shows remarkable understanding, forgiveness, and mercy towards all his comrades and even the enemy. This book is a classic and a must-read for anyone interested in what combat in the Pacific theater was really like and about young men's reaction to war. Rest in peace, Robert Leckie. For those who fell, there is no hell. I thank God knowing you have been reunited with your comrades. Thank you for writing this book. It was a privilege to have read it. A great gift to those who have never known the horrors and sacrifice of war.
