~WRITING: Confusing. Extremely wordy, overly detailed and long-winded. Time jumps forward and back without warning. Excessive use of metaphors.

~EDITING: minor errors found - missing/incorrect words & punctuation

~POV: dual alternating third person. POV change sporadically & without warning

~HERO: Cameron Cobain, 28--Fighter. Meticulously, obsessively neat & clean. Buzzed onyx hair, ice blue eyes, tattooed arms and upper body, 6'5" with monster-size junk. Manwhore. Animalistic, unpredictable, rough, dangerous, serious, brooding. Fierce, soulless fighter. Very sexual, demanding, possessive alpha. Has been obsessed with and protected Victoria since they were children - he's literally CRAZY over her, like not right in the head.

"What he felt for her flew somewhere between mad obsession and paternal commitment....she had no effing idea just how consuming he would be in her life."

"She needed his hand, his guidance, his promise to protect and care for her like no one ever had before. She needed to know just what it meant to be owned."

~HEROINE: Victoria, 22--Photographer. Works at her father's fighting gym. Virgin. Has ivory skin, brown eyes, chestnut hair. BBW with self-confidence issues. Very weak, a total pushover.

~PLOT: I skimmed the second half of the book but here's the first half...Cameron is a psycho. Victoria is a doormat. They used to be step siblings and Cam is totally obsessed with her. He makes her his, lays down the law and they have lotsa crazy sex.

~WHAT WORKED:
=realistic characters - Cameron has a chipped front tooth, crooked nose, scars. they aren't wealthy.

~WHAT DID NOT WORK:
=Way. Too. Long.
=H is OTT bossy, jealous, dominate, controlling. Vic finally gives in to sex with Cameron, he believes he owns her and there are now rules she must follow or be punished.

"That desire to bite and leave his mark was new, but with her, it was instinct and she needed to get used to it because he intended to leave his marks all over her for the world to see. Sure, she was going to fight him if he decided to welt her somewhere she couldn’t cover up with clothes, but he didn’t give a sh!t."
=they call each other 'Daddy' & 'Babygirl'...it wasn't hot at all
=Victoria's hair & eyes were described repeatedly...and differently (her hair was described as sable, chestnut, copper, caramel, shadowed bronze....aren't those different colors?)
=ideas/inner monologues repeated over and over and over

Hero is borderline PSYCHO.... Heroine is SPINELESS

I got about half way through this book before I called it quits... why:

1. The hero is borderline PSYCHO
2. Storyline was difficult to follow / not believable
3. The heroine is completely spineless
4. Also.. I was a little unsure of the "daddy" references... if that was all there was then okay but it seemed as though the Hero wanted to be the Heroine's "daddy" (father figure) and her lover...hmmm....

This book is getting a lot of good reviews and it is cheap (for now) and it has a decent amount of pages for the price. The sex scenes are hot as everyone is ranting and raving about but I could not get past the relationship inequity..

This book made me physically ill. I am not one for a book where the h is said to be intelligent, independent, etc but spends the entire book being dumb and dependent on an abusive "alpha" male who gets off on hurting her and then tells her she brought it on herself and that she likes it. There is a difference between being an Alpha male and being a over grown sex crazed bratty out of control maniac who has to have everything his way!!! All of the "punishments" were ridiculous and soooo over the top. The H was a control freak stalker with a severe BDSM fetish and she was just a victim then a slave. I didn't make it past the 2nd or was it the 3rd rape scene (they blurred together) in which he made her call him Daddy and he called her Baby Girl before I wanted to vomit. And then there's the "F" word. Seriously!?!?! Was it really necessary for the author to use the "F" word SO MUCH!!!! Shows a lack of intelligence or at the very least a lack of imagination. There are more curse words in the English language available try using another one every now and then. I stopped reading it around 20%-25% and didn't pick it back up until I was stuck without wifi at jury duty and needed something to fill the time. There should also be a warning label for survivors of rape and child abuse to NOT READ THIS BOOK!!!

It helped me under stand the Catholic position.

Upon This Rock was a well written and thought out book. It gave all the sources that he used and helped me to understand the depth of the Catholic position. I do not agree with Mr. Ray's conclusion but now I realize I may well be wrong. I think one goal of this book was to defend the Catholic Church and show why the church claims the authority it does. I have to admit many of my presuppositions have been changed and his work has helped me understand and even respect the faith of Catholics that much more.

Awestruck...

After reading opinions by James White and William Webster on the same subject, I thought I'd been given the full truth. But Mr. Ray's further, deeper development on White's/Webster's study showed me that I had only been given an incomplete story. What else about the Protestant faith is only "partially" developed ? Mr. Ray's presentation is overwhelming. One particular nugget in the goldmine of truth was not detailed in the New Testament, Old Testament, or the Church Fathers. It was a geography lesson on Caesarea Philllipi. It had never dawned on me what a long journey this was for Jesus and his disciples. The significance of the journey and the rock have come into focus!

I am now dedicating myself to learning what other partial truths have been developed fully by the catholic church.

Great Book

The discussion was excellent in that it chronicled the Office of the Papacy both in Scripture and in history. It is an excellent source book and demonstrated excellent research techniques especially in the Early Church Fathers documentation and reference. There are a great deal of footnotes, but unlike some books, these footnotes are very readable and useable either in a discussion as a Catholic Christian Apologist or as a bibliography in a paper. I highly recommend this book.

My Love Hate Relationship

At first I hated the book "Conducting Business Ethically" by Dr. Martin Lecker --- not because it is a bad book--yet I'll address that later. Basically, I could not keep up and handle all of the philosophical questions that are asked after each chapter. My professor required us to write out all of the answers and hand in the book and our papers now by mid semester. It took me literally four to five hours a week to do all of the work plus write over six papers about philosophers and articles we read. Our grades depended on this as well and bear in mind that this is only a three-credit course. I was under extreme pressure studying for a long test we just took. As a result, I took my anger out on the book and its author. This went on for weeks and weeks.

We finally got to the point were we finished the test, handed in all the assignments; I now stopped to smell the roses. In retrospect I had really gained a great amount of value from this book and learned a lot. When the teacher instructed us to buy the text he should have said this is a YTML -"you'll thank me later" (book).

Basically, the book covered at least twenty-five philosophers in a concise way highlighting the most important details and aspects of their lives and philosophies. After my love hate relationship calmed down, I really began to appreciate the book. I liked that it was objectively written and leaves room for lots of thought and your own opinions. I realized after writing a load of papers about philosophers, there is a lot more to them than the book describes. I learned to gradually understand the teachings of Socrates and Aristotle as well and see things in a different light from before I began the class. I had started to understand the connections they have with the more contemporary philosophers and how these all fits in with Business Ethics. We had just scratched the surface. Now the real practical part will begin--the other half of the book which deals with businesses today.

This is a good book, I had to purchase it for my Business in ethics class, It is a great book and really makes you think, it is well worth the money! The price is also very good and Amazon shipping is known to be very fast. Definitely recommended!

Please pass on the textbook

Lecker incorrectly lays out the concept of prima facie duty. I am not shocked by this matter, though, because Mr. Lecker does not have a single degree in philosophy. This book is a common modern-day example of an individual with business degrees, that also have a nice, shiny Ed.D. in education who puts themselves out as an expert in ethics. His explanation of complex ethical theories reads like an undergraduate-level college student's term paper. This book is an example of why publishers should stick with the experts, rather than the individuals possessing an Ed.D in education.

A Tragedy in Science

I really like this book for a number of reasons. But it is a story that makes me feel quite sorry and kind of sad or disappointed. I believe the facts as reported in the book are fairly accurate and that's not really the problem of course but what concerns me most is the nature of the tragedy this story describes . The disappointment here is that we didn't know the facts earlier.

And there's no way to go back and right the wrong or "fix the thing". I am probably a hopeless romantic. But that is how I feel about this case. This person Rosalind Franklin was as described in this book as someone who I would have liked to have known. I used to often chat with a female crystallographer when I was in undergraduate physics and quite often I shared with her my observations about people in physics and she often shared with me what it was like for her working as a Post Doc in crystallography.

She later moved away and some years after that I read the "Double Helix"...I don't think I finished it at that time but I do remember "Rosalind" as she was portrayed in that book and I compared that portrayal to my friend who had been doing crystallography and I wondered what was going on. That was about 1977 or thereabouts. And I didn't really care about the whole affair or DNA at the time until much later when I was actually thrown into Biophysics quite by accident.

And then my own research in DNA took off. And as I began to learn more about DNA I began to take note of all the many different books which had been coming out talking about the discovery and talking about Rosalind Franklin.
Actually alot of the discoveries of these various books was done browsing Amazon.com. I began to get curious about what was going on or what had been going on with regard to the discovery of the structure of DNA. What was the difference between these "official versions" (Watson et al.) and now these "unofficial versions" of the story.

I wish that the circumstances had been different for Rosalind. We lost a beautiful person and a great crystallographer.....and I wish she could have had the recognition that she was certainly worthy of. (actually we've lost many great minds in science to cancer.....doesn't that strike you as odd?)

The way to resolve the apparent contadiction between this book and say Watson's accounts is to simply realize that the DNA work was under strict government control.
There was no "intellectual freedom" that Watson and his guys would like us to believe. Government control is not talked about in Anne Sayre's book. She is trying to look at it in a different way....that there are "rules of conduct" in science and that there is/should be some kind of honor system...I agree with her but that didn't apply to this DNA story....it was a government "setup" from the beginning.

What an amazing woman!

OK, so it's probably a little biased because it's clear that the author was close friends with Ms Franklin, but nonetheless, it painted a very interesting picture of the woman who made many contributions to the scientific field, and who alas, received very little recognition for her work. Certainly James Watson who wrote [The Double Helix] appeared to discredit Ms Franklin almost every time he mentions her, even going so far as giving her a diminutive nickname of 'Rosy'.

This book attempts to not just describe Rosalind's drive in challenging herself and others around her, but delves also into her impressive family history, and through that, we start to see how Rosalind's character was shaped. Her confidence and penchant for discussions, even her enjoyment of dissenting opinions, was sometimes perceived by other less confident individuals as arrogance. She unfortunately, lived in a time when women were merely tolerated but hardly respected in her chosen fields in England. It was only during her years in Paris that she appeared to be at her happiest, where the environment of enthusiastic discussions and information sharing was, for her, simply ideal.

If her environment at King's College had been similar to what she experienced in Paris, it is thought she may have broken the DNA code much sooner. Instead, apart from a student, she worked in isolation. If not for the copious and detailed notes she took and which survived her, we would not have known how far she had come in her DNA research.

Once Crick and Watson had published their paper on DNA, Rosalind, not only wasn't bitter, but she wrote a supporting paper that displayed her delight in the beauty and perfection of the model.

"What she touched she adorned"-Aaron Klug

How did I make it through college and graduate level biology courses without knowing Rosalind Franklin's story? I only remember some small talk by some of my fellow classmates that Watson and Crick couldn't have solved the puzzle of DNA without her data. I knew she used x-ray crystallography, didn't know that she considered herself, first and foremost a physical chemist. I knew she was British, I didn't know she was a jewess and that her family had connections with some prominent zionist leaders.

Her story is amazing. All girls considering a career in science should read this book, talk about sexism. I love her personality and attitude. She was steady and focussed, she had no idea that Maurice Wilkins, her equal in the lab, took her pictures out of her desk and shared them with Watson and Crick. She had no inkling that there was a contest. This book is written by her friend who no doubt was hurt by some of the things that Watson wrote about her in his much acclaimed Double Helix.

Anne Sayre refutes Watson's claim, "This is how science is done." Their friend Aaron Klug's comment about Rosalind "What she touched, she adorned," is the more noble way of doing science. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, learned about it from an Amazon friend's review. One cannot read The Double Helix without reading this side of the story. Rosalind died a decade before the nobel prize was awarded to Watson and Crick at the age of 37. I love Rosalind's character, what an example to young girls studying science.
