Great book for beginners

I am trying to learn a bit about FPGA's in my limited spare time, and while I haven't finished this book yet, my impression is that this is probably the best introduction that I will find. It is concise and yet accessible, and slim rather than overwhelming in volume. Instead of making you walk through vendor-specific setup wizards that implement some CPU analog on your FPGA with the click of a button, this book begins with the most fundamental concepts, rationales, syntax rules, and code examples of FPGA programming in Verilog, building from there. Hindsight is always 20/20, and the author's express purpose was to utilize his learning experience to write the kind of introductory book that he wished he had had 20 years ago when he started out as a novice. I congratulate him to this approach.

Hard to pin down, exactly

I know exactly who this book is for (me, among others, about 15 years ago), but I'm still not sure how to describe it. Thar reader is fluent enough with normal programming languages that bits of syntax won't be a problem - making it that much easier to address the problematic parallelism implicit in HDLs. That reader also has a fair understanding about the bits & bobs of logic design: gates, RAMs, registers, and the like, but maybe never took the second course in logic design.

This book, a companion to Readler's "VHDL by example," gives the novice a running start at the other major hardware design language. People on both sides can get pretty het up about which is The One, often along geographic lines (Europe vs. US, East coast vs. West coast). The fact is, though, that you don't often get to pick. Your employer, your work group or client, the tools and libraries available to you will often make the choice for you. So, it's best to know both, and Readler's books treat them with a reasonably even hand.

In the unlikely event that you're free to choose, it's a matter of taste. I certainly have my preferences, but they don't matter much. Verilog reminds a programmer of C - I mean, K&R C, from way back, with all the good and bad that implies. Include files, scopeless macro definition, and uninformative module (or function) prototypes will all look familiar. VHDL, on the other hand, derives consciously from Ada, with all the good and bad that implies. That includes packages (which no one uses), operator overloads (which no one thinks they use, but do), and draconian type checking - something that will cost you a lot of time, but very likely save you even more.

Like its VHDL twin, this gives only the basics, i.e. what you'll use for about 97% of your HDL coding. Like the other, it introduces test benches - just as well, and just as badly. On the "well" side, it shows the basic structure of a test driver, clock generator, test stimulus and housekeeping. On the "badly" side, it provides inputs but never checks outputs. In industry, your logic might be subjected to nightly regression tests, where a robot controller expects your tests to verify the outputs and give a go/nogo output in machine-readable form. These days, a big logic design includes billions or tens of billions of transistors. Believe me, you won't do eyeball checks of waveforms on each input and output. Saying "I checked the output and it looked good" simply is not an answer.

And, I have to raise a personal peeve about every HDL book in the world, this included. There are lots of things you can put in the synthesizable payload logic: memories, boolean goodies, registers, and simple arithmetic. There are lots of things you can't: print statements, mod and div operators, and lots more. The synthesizable can go into your FPGA or anywhere; the un-synthesizable can exist only in your simulation environment. You need both, but you also need to draw a thick black line between the two, and never even think about the simulation-only features when you code your payload logic. No book I've seen (this included) emphasizes that distinction, and it's a huge barrier for many students. That said, this book is no worse than any other I know.

So, it's basic. It's very basic. Any competent instructor would get you way past this level in a hurry. But many people, my niece included, don't have instructors, competent or otherwise. If you're lifting yourself by your own bootstraps into the esoterica of HDL logic design, this is the best Verilog book I know. You'll need a lot more to gain strength as a logic designer, but everyone has to start somewhere. Bon voyage!

Excellent Started Book

This was a great starter book for learning Verilog in the context of FPGA design. I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking to pick up the Verilog language. It takes you from language through simulation. It is not a comprehensive reference, but a nice introductory tutorial.

After 2 hours in Sydney, and 90 minutes in the seething atmosphere of Montevideo 4 days earlier, Mark Schwarzer's giant hands and John Aloisi's magical left foot allowed Australia to sneak past Uruguay in a penalty shootout - the worst and best way to end a contest of this magnitude.

That Night isn't just about a game of football though. It delves into the story of why we had to wait 32 years, talking to the players who lived through those nightmares. Losing to New Zealand in 1981, Scotland in 1985, a Maradona-inspired Argentina in 1993 and our most haunting nightmare, Iran in 1997.

The players that were on the field That Night tell their stories like never before of how they got to that moment, what their role in the success on That Night was. It wasn't simply a case of showing up to play 2 games against Uruguay. This was the culmination of a career spent mainly away from these shores to get somewhere in the world's biggest sport. Kewell, Aloisi, Viduka, Emerton, Culina, Grella, Bresciano, Popovic, Vidmar, Skoko.

Who knows were the sport would be if we didn't get to the World Cup. Certainly nowhere near where it is now. Great pacing, real insights and wonderful background information on a key night in Australian Sport

Excellent writing, really good pacing throughout. Finds a clever way of introducing the back story for all the key players throughout the book, rather than as a big chunk at the front. Even though you know the ending is still a page turner. Really enjoyed this book. If I had one quibble with it there are few too many metaphors for my taste, but that is minor thing, and for people with different tastes they will probably enjoy them, I did enjoy some of them, just a few too many, but again that is a minor quibble. I strongly recommend you buy this book, he did a great job of getting the key players from the night to contribute to the book and you can tell it is written by a true lover of the game and Australian Football.

More Historiography Than History

NOTE: This review is for the 1997 edition.

This is an extremely brief review of about 200 years of history of the sub-continent, covering modern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (with extremely brief nods to Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan). It is written for college- or graduate-level readers or, more likely, professors of Indian or Pakistani history. Because the two authors are far more interested in discussing trends in South Asian historiography than in actually reporting the facts, I do not recommend this book for anyone interested in history.

The book starts with ancient history (Mohenjodaro and Harappa) and covers through 1997 (with updated material in later editions), but it is clear that the authors are more interested in the late colonial period, and far more interested in Partition and post-Partition. They breeze through the pre-Islamic era and the Mughals quickly and shallowly. That's understandable and expected in a book on "Modern" South Asia, but when they come to the colonial period, they still devote more time to causes, effects, and intellectual cross-currents than to what actually happened. For a reader with a very solid foundation in sub-continental history, the focus on how modern scholarship has changed traditional understandings may be a welcome change from a bare recitation of the facts. But that means this is less a work of history, and more a work of historigraphy. I finished it knowing more about what scholars think about what happened in India than about what happened in India.

A few examples: the authors introduce the Indian National Congress on p. 107, but never explain what it is, who was in it, and what it did, except for what can be gleaned piecemeal over then next 140 pages. We are told on p. 122 that when "viceroy Hardinge made a ceremonial entry on an elephant into New Delhi in 1912, he was greeted with a Bengali revolutionary's bomb." So was Hardinge killed? The authors do not say. More to the point, who was Hardinge? A viceroy who rode an elephant once, is all I can get from the text. Apparently someone named Radcliffe was responsible for drawing the partition lines. Who was Radcliffe? The authors don't say (and in a book primarily focused on Partition, that is an especially unusual omission). Maybe the best example pertains to Gen. Zia ul Haq: "When Zia vanished into fire and ash in August 1988 the fiscal crisis of the state was visible to all" (p. 234). That's certainly evocative, but if you don't already know that he was killed in a plane crash, it's also quite bizarre.

The authors write of the 1857 revolt that "[i]t is simpler, certainly far less controversial, to catalogue the course and extent of the rebellion than to analyze its character" (p. 92). Undoubtedly true. And yet, in a history book, that seems an important thing to do. That sentence captures the essence of my view of the book: this is a history where the authors forgot the include the section on history.

Read this book if you already know the history of South Asia, and if you want an admirable bibliograhy. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Brilliant & well researched

"Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past" said George Orwell. Modern South Asia represents another attempt by Sugata Bose and Ayesha Jalal to wrest control of the past from those who control the present. Cutting right through the lies published in official history text books, Bose and Jalal make a clear, convincing and appealing argument: Partition was the result of misplaced assumptions and opportunism on the part of both Hindu and Muslim leadership. Classification of Muslims as a nation instead of a minority was initially only a tactic to ensure equal representation at the center. It is a great irony of history that it led to the disintegration of the same center. The book is generally well written although the poetry translations could be improved. It should, however, not be treated as a first introduction to the history of the region but as a commentary on partition which created the identities: indian and pakistani, and subsequent events which led to their objectification. A must-read.

Good overview but lacking anything new or revealing

Although this book may serve to guide people through South Asia, it doesn't really explain or go into the complexities of the region. In the case of Pakistan we do not get a complete picture of its varied past as western Pakistan isn't South Asia, but is instead more Middle Eastern as it is populated by speakers of Iranian languages (as opposed to the Indic tongues spoken in eastern Pakistan) Pashtuns and Baluchis. Also the Hindu-Muslim struggles are reduced to religion rather than adding the linguistic and cultural divisions prevalent to this day. For being tauted as revisionist there seems to be little revisionism just different wording.

A must have for people new to BDSM

I am so glad that I took the time to read this book before I began my journey into the BDSM world. I learned so many great things from it. The book is set up to make sure you get the most from it and gives clear and descriptive instructions on how to make the relationship work the best it can. Simple little things that I would not have thought of are explained with their uses and benefits very well illustrated. I would not have thought to have a contract or two different collars with one for training and one for the actual relationship.
The book covers every part of training necessary to ensure that your relationship is successful. I really enjoyed how well the need for trust and education was explained. It's not enough to just jump into a BDSM relationship. To be the best experience for you both, it is necessary to have a well thought out plan in place. Each of the different areas that you will find yourself in, are well documented and explained in each of the easy to read chapters. I am really looking forward to continuing my exploration of this exciting area now that I have read this book.

The training is broken down into sections based on the progression of your training ensuring success.

It is a good starter book. It is important to remember every couple is different. Every form of training is different. Take the ideas in the book as an outline. Not every Dom wants dick worship. Some Doms love the chanlenge of a Brat.

Dr. Fei Hu is currently a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA. He obtained his Ph.D. degrees at Tongji University (Shanghai, China) in the field of Signal Processing (in 1999), and at Clarkson University (New York, USA) in Electrical and Computer Engineering (in 2002). He has published over 200 journal/conference papers and books. Dr. Hu's research has been supported by U.S. National Science Foundation, Cisco, Sprint, and other sources. His research expertise can be summarized as 3S: Security, Signals, Sensors: (1) Security: This is about how to overcome different cyber attacks in a complex wireless or wired network. Recently he focuses on cyber-physical system security and medical security issues. (2) Signals: This mainly refers to intelligent signal processing, that is, using machine learning algorithms to process sensing signals in a smart way in order to extract patterns (i.e., pattern recognition). (3) Sensors: This includes micro-sensor design and wireless sensor networking issues.

Dr. Jiang Lu is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at University of Houston Clear Lake, Houston, Texas, USA. He obtained his Ph.D. degrees at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, AL, USA) in the field of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He received Bachelor of Science degree from Shanghai Maritime University in China and Master of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Florida. Dr. Lus research interests are in the areas of intelligent sensor systems, biomedical devices, tele-healthcare, wireless communication, signal/image processing, machine learning and embedded system designs.

Ting Zhang received the B.E. degree in computer engineering from Tianjing University, Tianjing, China in 2008, and the M.S. degree in computer science from University of Texas at Brownsville, Brownsville, TX in 2011.
