From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up - Rebellious in his East London home and deeply alienated from his alcoholic West Indian father, 15-year-old Ray pops off during class, gets expelled, and joins his best friends, outgoing Prem and contemplative Tyrone, who have also been "excluded" from school. All three are passionate hip-hop lovers who hang out in a small music shop run by a sympathetic Jamaican named Marga Man. After they are jailed following a fight, the headmaster decides to enroll them in an alternative program that allows them to pursue their rap interests. Marga Man uses his music contacts to get them started in a band - the Positive Negatives - and they soon become successful. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a rival band. Spurred on by a greedy promoter, the rappers engage in a deadly gang fight that both groups later regret. With the promoter in jail, they vow to work together to end the violence. Ray is an appealing and multidimensional character, but many of the others are little more than types. Mirroring the culture of "gangsta rap," some of the dialogue is misogynist (girls are referred to as "bitches"), stereotyped (Marga Man speaks a combination of mainstream and pidgin English), and raw. A mixed bag with a wholesome message. - Jack Forman, Mesa College Library, San Diego

From Booklist
Gr. 9-12. Growing up among working-class immigrants in east London, 15-year-old Ray and his two best friends are in danger of being lost. All three have been expelled (Ray for calling his headmaster "a big pussy"). Their only passion is hip-hop, and Manga Man, an older Jamaican who owns a music shop, is the only adult they respect. Then the boys' former headmaster enrolls the teens in a progressive school that combines traditional coursework with practical music experience. With the help of Manga Man, the boys dive into their work and form a band. A fairy tale of hip-hop success follows: a record deal and massive fame and wealth. A few characters lack dimension, and a subplot about a violent hip-hop rivalry doesn't entirely work. The boys' speech also occasionally echoes the harsh misogyny in some of the hip-hop they love: "I see some bitches that look like they want some training." But teens will enjoy the thrilling music fantasy, while many will identify with the smart, talented boys who grow up quickly and rescue themselves. Gillian Engberg

Review
"The authority with which the story is written leaves the reader no choice but to be drawn in - and indeed educated - into the world of gangsta rap, with all the appropriate vocabulary. Not for a long time have I read a book with such a 'pick me up again' factor" Independent on Sunday

An interesting look at the rap industry
By Teen Reads
Fifteen-year old Ray is living in a life of turmoil. He's constantly fighting with his parents --- especially his father --- in their East London flat. At school, it's even worse. His best friends, Tyrone and Prem, have been kicked out. Then Ray threatens a staff member, and he too is "permanently excluded." The only happiness the boys have is listening to music and spending time at the local music shop. The store is run by an older Jamaican, who they affectionately call "Marga Man."

Once the boys are no longer in school, they get into even more trouble on the streets. The reality of their situation hits hard when they are thrown in jail for fighting in a public park, which only angers their parents further. When the school board contacts their families, it seems as if there is only one solution. The boys have been invited to join an alternative education program targeted towards what interests them most: music. All of their studies will be focused on music and the music industry. As part of this experience, they are to work in an actual recording studio. Although some of their parents are hesitant at first, the boys give it a shot.

With Marga Man as their manager, the boys create a rap group called the Positive Negatives. They are swept up into the music industry and become superstars practically overnight. They record an album, perform on television, and are selling out live concerts. At this point, the plot seems to go off track, like a train running out of control. In the first part of the book, the reader is drawn in slowly by the characters of Ray, Tyrone and Prem. As the music takes over their lives, the plot speeds up on overdrive, and the subtleties of each teen are lost.

And then, in an odd and almost confusing twist of events, the issue of gang warfare comes into the story. The Positive Negatives are first being harassed and then attacked by unknown gang members. Now, they struggle to deal with both their fame and the world of the cruel streets.

Author Benjamin Zephaniah is a poet and performing artist in England. His poetry is displayed in the rap lyrics that are scattered throughout this work. If you want to learn more about the world of the rap music industry, then GANGSTA RAP is the book for you.

8 Mile for TEENS!
By A Customer
This book definately sets the tone as a great comparison to 8 Mile. Parents should know that this book has strong language but provides an excellent storyline of three boys entering the wonderful and at points violent world. A grreat novel!

Gangsta Rap
By Edith A. Campbell
Our story begins with a shouting match between Ray and his dad. This scene displays the anger, tension and miscommunication that propels Ray and his friends Prem and Tyrone to act irrationally and rudely. RaLater tht morning, Ray explodes on his teacher and threatens him, I guess carrying on the anger from home. Ray is permanently excluded from school as Prem and Tyrone already have been. We don't really get to the root of Ray's anger. We know that his dad drinks a lot, has a temper and doesn't understand his son. We know that his mom does everything she can to hold the family together. At a final meeting before the boys are given their walking papers, they're given the option of attending an alternative school. It's a very new school, the mothers are skeptical, but it is seems to be their only hope of getting a diploma for their sons.

This school will build a curriculum around students career interests and for these boys, it's hip hop music.

At this point, it's easy to think that the boy's main problem is a lack of male presence. While a poor relationship with their dad is a crucial part of the story (because little is more important to young men than their relationship with their dad) there is an abundance of men supporting these boys. Manga Man, a local record shop owner is their surrogate dad and manager. School administrators, business people and musicians all work with the boys to help them finish their education while they begin a hip hop career. Despite all that is being done to help them, the boys manage to maintain rather surly attitudes.

Almost too quickly, the boys release a successful CD. While they don't get the glamour and bright lights that most Americans expect, they do begin to get attention and realize they have to surround themselves with people they can trust. They've been educated about the music business and are aware of contracts, obligations and all the work involved with maintaining success. They are also well read on hip hop, knowing its origins, messages and format. They want to be true British hip hop stars. The down sounds of the industry are presented, as the boys are dangerously used just for the money they generate. This bit of suspense is good for moving the story along.

I didn't really like these boys. I was glad to see them successful and did see them grow up a little bit, but they were not developed enough for me to understand and accept them. I would like to think that young people can be successful without having to limit their development by focusing on a career that may or may not be successful and I found their poor attitudes towards every adult unjustified. I do think the story will give young people a lot to consider and more than that, it will give them hope of succeeding with their own dreams.

Micro-goodness
By Angel D. Zapata
“Maikro” presents us with ninety-nine haikus and thirty-four works of micro-fiction. As a poet myself, I know how difficult it is to create a successful and an emotionally accessible haiku, but Mr. Fowler proves he’s quite adept at his craft.

His poetic works begin and center on the concept of motion in nature: sunlight and shifting sand, wandering clouds, sudden bursts of bird wings, and Earth’s slow rotation into darkness and moonlit skies. Halfway through his collection, the overall dynamic transitions into the speculative realm. Mutants and steampunkesque humanoids pulsate with oil and radioactive blood. Two favorites of mine are “statue on duty / gleaming mechanical man / winks at passerby,” and “vampyres are breeding / sewers and subway tunnels / springtime underground.”

His fiction is quick and energetic. Works range from six-word and one to two-sentence stories into works peaking at about one hundred words. Once again, he offers us unexpected tales rooted in science fiction and fantasy. I loved “Mimecry,” a tiny, odd story about the narrator’s aversion to clowns and tender fascination with mimes. “That one at the park with the tear painted on his cheek?... He imagines the whole world contained within a single blue teardrop. And he sheds one all his own.”

This collection is great for lovers of genre poetry and fiction. I really enjoyed it.

EVOCATIVE AND HAUNTING
By Roland
Like the Bonsai tree, haiku and micro fiction evoke primarily contemplation (for the viewer or reader) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower or writer).

The essence of haiku is "cutting" (kiru). Likewise with micro fiction and the Bonsai Tree. All three places limits on the author. Done poorly, the cutting produces ugliness. Done well, the cutting process produces beauty that makes the viewer look up to reflect on the impact and implications.

Milo James Fowler falls in the latter category. He makes you pause, reflect, or simply revel in the imagery.

Listen:

ethereal souls
urban cacophony
dancing through moonlight

No words of mine can translate that for you. Each soul is different so you will be touched in a way diffent than me. But you will be touched.

Or:

keeping my head down
so little of the day missed
until you appear

A memory flashed before your eyes did it not? Evocative poetry does that for you. You will not be the same after reading these haikus or his micro fiction.

Spending under a dollar to be transformed and enriched is the best buy you will make today. Buy MAIKRO now.

Wonderful imagery, clever observations and wry humour
By Textile Figure Artist
In this volume, Milo shares an impressive and inspirational collection of haiku and mini stories for science fiction, fantasy and horror enthusiasts that have been independently accepted for publication in other online and print publications.

While the haiku don't always follow the traditional 5,7,5 syllable structure they are full of wonderful imagery, clever observations and wry humour. Themes covered include common phobias and vices; the possibilities and anomalies of time travel; parallel universes; global warming; space and planets; space flight; dreams to name just a few.

Milo's writing does not disappoint as he skilfully draws the reader into the fantasy, illusion or terror, building worlds and realities through his fertile imagination to create a satisfying punch-line that provides food for thought.

Dead Men Do Tell Tales: Strange and Fascinating Cases of a Forensic Anthropologist, by William R. Maples, Michael Browning

William Maples was a groundbreaking criminal anthropologist. From a skeleton, a skull, or a mere fragment of bone, he could deduce the age and sex of a corpse and the manner in which the victim met its death. Numerous brutal and vicious murders were solved through his skill in reading the bones of the dead. "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" reveals the fascinating case histories behind some of his most unusual and horrific investigations. In startling and sometimes gruesome detail, but always with remarkable compassion, Dr Maples describes the steps he took in resolving each mystery - from baffling dismemberment cases to the identity of long-buried skeletons.

From Publishers Weekly
Noted forensic anthropologist Maples, whose specialty is the study of bones, and freelance journalist Browning here recount Maples's criminal and anthropological investigations over the past 20 years. The meandering text combines episodes from Maples's personal life and education with discourses on his philosophy, his teaching at the Univ. of Florida and his work. The book's strength is as a snapshot of the world of forensic scientists, vividly portraying the siege mentality of many of them when their objective data are used for purposes other than ascertaining the truth about how a victim died. Despite the two-dimensional depiction of the people who were the objects of Maples's investigations-including the "likely" remains of Romanov Tsar Nicholas II-his memoirs should hold readers' interest.

From Booklist
Maples' first exposure to his career came as a freshman in college when a class he wanted was full and his adviser then suggested he take the survey course on anthropology. Maples was fortunate, as will be any reader with a strong stomach who picks up his book. He tells how he learned to look at mangled bodies and continues to explain how he learned to both see and observe and how he discovered such fruitful techniques as tasting bone samples. Although it tends to be lifeless, forensic anthropology is not a cut-and-dried subject; nevertheless, Maples narrates his cases clearly and engagingly. He describes the remains (or, when burnt, cremains) presented to him, describes what he looks for, and guides us through his thinking and the search for additional clues and information. His most difficult, fascinating, and perplexing case dealt with a 1985 apparent double murder and burning, while among historic bodies, Maples dealt with those of Francisco Pizarro, Zachary Taylor, Czar Nicholas II, and Joseph Merrick, "the Elephant Man." William Beatty

Review
"When he's not shattering myths about maggots, Dr. Maples is delightfully unraveling true murder mysteries, ancient and modern. He's not just another clever forensic detective -- he's a poet, a philosopher, and a sly commentator on the fractured human condition, pre-and post-mortem."
-- Carl Hiaasen, author of Strip Tease and Native Tongue

"Whether Maples' subjects are famous or anonymous, it is how he tells their stories that makes this book so fascinating and -- in its fashion -- delightful."
--Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post Book World

"William R. Maples and Michael Browning could've written a dry clinical analysis of forensic anthropology; instead they tell tales better than the dead could for themselves."
-- New York Times Book Review

Very poor first half followed by a great second half
By RamRS
The book is definitely worth a read. The author spends almost half the book fluffing himself up and writing loads of not-so-humblebrag anecdotes. I reached a point where I was ready to give up on the book - it was so repulsively self-aggrandizing. And then the author pivots and starts describing actual cases he has tackled, and you see how well forensic anthropology can help answer questions on long dead people as well as recently deceased folks, ala Bones.

Overall, if the author had written just he cases, and added maybe a couple more of them, the book would be 4.5 stars worthy.

Fascinating!
By J. Schultz
I was truly impressed by the easily conveyed information that both of the authors' presented for us laypeople! As I've gotten older, there are innumerable subjects that interest me, which would have been a great help in my school tears, i.e., ancient to modern history, ancient cultures, forensics, & other such areas! This book produced quite a vast amount of interest on a lot of those subjects! From the identification of the assassinated remains of the Romanovs, to the proven bones of Pizarro & back to the horrific murders committed in Gainesville, Florida, by Danny Rollings, everything was fascinating & interesting! If there were any complaints, it would have to be that it desperately needs updating! I had no idea what the copyright date was & a few clues as I read made me realize it had to be in the 1990's! Dr Maples is the highly known forensic anthropologist who was a major scientist in the verifying of the mangled bones of the Romanovs, however, there wasn't any mention of the later found remains of the two missing bodies that were buried & exhumed some time later. There was also the surprise that Anna Anderson, who laid the best foundation of her claims of being Anastasia, among very many, had yet to be exposed as no relation whatsoever after DNA testing.

Even so, it provided a great deal of information that I was able to take away as some I had no clue before, so if a book can do that for me & also be a compelling read, it's a win-win to me!

"...There lurks a Minotaur that feeds on human flesh."
By ealovitt
Forensic anthropologist, Dr. William R. Maples has studied the bones of people killed in almost every conceivable way: "meat cleavers, machetes, ice picks, bayonets, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, crowbars, pry bars, two-by-fours, tree limbs, jack handles...neckties, pantyhose, ropes, bootlaces, towels and chains." Even a frozen ham.

He (along with his co-author, Michael Browning) tells a vivid story and is not afraid to editorialize:

"At the center of the labyrinth of certain human personalities there lurks a Minotaur that feeds on human flesh, and we have not yet found the thread to help us map this maze and slay the beast."

I've read many classics by forensic pathologists such as Sir Sidney Smith ("Mostly Murder"), Dr. Keith Simpson ("Forty Years of Murder"), and Dr. Michael Baden ("Dead Reckoning: the New Science of Catching Killers") and have read crime fiction by forensic anthropologists such as Bill Bass ("Carved In Bone" published under the pseudonym 'Jefferson Bass'). "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" is my first autobiography by a forensic anthropologist, and it deserves to be placed on the shelf with my all-time favorite true crime books. There are case studies of heinous crimes--the drifter, Danny Harold Rolling, who murdered five University of Florida students--but also cases involving historical figures such as President Zachery "Old Rough and Ready" Taylor who died of an unspecified gastrointestinal disorder after only sixteen months in office.

Was he our first assassinated president?

In one of his most famous cases, Dr. Maples was invited to Russia to examine the bones of what might have been the last Czar of Russia, his family, and servants. All were gunned down by a Bolshevik death squad in July, 1918.

Along with other forensic scientists, he has also been involved in identifying the bones of our soldiers who never returned from war.

One of the most affecting skeletons that he was asked to examine was that of the "Elephant Man," Joseph Merrick.

This book is truly a feast (a somewhat grisly feast) for those of us who value the application of science to otherwise unsolvable mysteries. If you are reading "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" while at the dinner table, you might want to save the photographs until after you have finished digesting.

In 1997, Dr. Maples died of brain cancer at the relatively young age of 59.

About Faces: Physiognomy in Nineteenth-Century Britain, by Sharrona Pearl

When nineteenth-century Londoners looked at each other, what did they see, and how did they want to be seen? Sharrona Pearl reveals the way that physiognomy, the study of facial features and their relationship to character, shaped the way that people understood one another and presented themselves.

Physiognomy was initially a practice used to get information about others, but soon became a way to self-consciously give information―on stage, in print, in images, in research, and especially on the street. Moving through a wide range of media, Pearl shows how physiognomical notions rested on instinct and honed a kind of shared subjectivity. She looks at the stakes for framing physiognomy―a practice with a long history―as a science in the nineteenth century.

By showing how physiognomy gave people permission to judge others, Pearl holds up a mirror both to Victorian times and our own.

Review
Although this book is clearly a cultural history of Victorian Britain, the resonances of physiognomy with current preoccupations and events are poignant. With pervasive concerns about the alleged invisible threats in our midst, any technology or idea, old or new, that promises to reveal those threats tends to carry weight. As Pearl rightly concludes, the promise of establishing reliable links between appearance and underlying reality was played for high stakes--and still is. (Alan Collins Times Higher Education Supplement 2010-04-15)

Pearl's book is a brilliant and original contribution to the history of visual culture. It bodes well for the career of a young scholar whose questions are difficult and whose answers are compelling. (Sander L. Gilman Bulletin of the History of Medicine 2011-01-01)

In this smart, engaging book, Sharrona Pearl shows that we can see Victorian culture through new eyes if we learn to look, as the Victorians did, with a physiognomic sensibility. Actors, criminals, the insane, rushed Londoners, Irish, Jews: all came to be categorized in this new form of gaze. Pearl's inventive and expansive About Faces recreates for us this most protean of nineteenth-century sciences. (Peter Galison, Harvard University)

This is a masterful study of how the Victorians came to see each other and themselves. Sharrona Pearl's witty, incisive, and pathbreaking book uses 'physiognomy'--the scientific study of faces--to tell us about the ways that the nineteenth-century British understood their rapidly changing social world, one face and glance at a time. (Alison Winter, author of Mesmerized: Powers of Mind in Victorian Britain)

About the Author
Sharrona Pearl is Assistant Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication of the University of Pennsylvania.
