Reading the script for Caryl Churchill's 1979 play about sex and love is a special workout for the imagination. First, she asks you to imagine characters whose sexual identities and alliances shift constantly. Then she asks you to imagine that most of the characters make an impossible leap in time, from colonial Africa in the Victorian age to contemporary Britain. Lastly, she asks you to imagine some of the male characters played by women and some female characters played by men. Churchill likes to get things good and mixed up so all the audience's preconceptions about gender, romance, and "lifestyle" are scrambled, neutralized, and possibly even rebuilt. The title refers to the state of orgasmic and emotional bliss that everyone in this play seems to be striving for so desperately.

Caryl Churchill (1938-) is probably the most respected woman dramatist in the English-speaking world. Although "Turning Pages" is about ninety percent visual, its text should not be overlooked. More than simply captions for the visual material, related text notes what to look for in the visual material and often explains its purpose and source. Apart from annotation-like text, there are also interspersed editorial commentary and quotes by designers, typographers, and other professionals whose work is displayed. In short, the text is instructive.

Amazing resource

As a graphic designer, I'm constantly complaining about the lack of new and interesting design in print media. So I was thrilled to find this book from my favorite publisher. It shows excellent examples of a thriving, edgy editorial design in print publications, like Apartamento, Domus, a few German publications. Maybe one of the most interesting parts is the documentation of online media redefined via interactive graphics and data visualization a la The New York Times and others. I'll complain no more. An excellent resource for those who feel stifled by traditional stagnant print media.

As a graphic designer I am extremely impressed with the layout and use of typography. At first it can seem a bit over stimulating, but it is beautifully done nonetheless, and the content is perfect for any new or experienced designer. Communicate Effectively

I've learned my whole life to fill my sentences with pompous words in an attempt to sound smart. Stabbing my sentences with fluffy words has created writing that I don't understand, let alone those who have to read it!

Rudolf fixes that problem. He understands the pain. He grades terrible papers! His book was easy to understand, and I can finally figure out how to cut the crap from my writing.

About the Author

Gordon Gibb, PhD, taught students with disabilities in the public schools for 16 years prior to his appointment at Brigham Young University. Tina Taylor Dyches, EdD, is professor and Associate Dean in the McKay School of Education at Brigham Young University. Dr. Dyches has worked with individuals with significant disabilities and their families for nearly 30 years as a special educator and professor. Her service and research interests include adaptation of families raising children with disabilities, children’s literature that characterizes individuals with disabilities, and provision of appropriate services to individuals with disabilities.
