How To Sculpt a Classic Physique: Techniques and Wisdom From Legends of the Pre-Steroid Era, by Jeff Andora

“I don't believe in bodybuilders using steroids. If a man doesn't have enough male hormones in his system to create a nice hard, muscular body, he should take up ping pong.”
-Steve Reeves

This book is filled with quotes and timeless, invaluable advice from pre-steroid era bodybuilders such as Steve Reeves, Reg Park, Clancy Ross, John Grimek, Jack Lalanne, Vince Gironda, and several others.
Imagine Walking into a small, dark and dingy gym in 1950.

There was no such thing as anabolic steroids. They weren't invented yet and didn't show up in bodybuilding until the early 1960s.

At that time, there was also no such thing as the internet, where inexperienced, 19 year old steroid users could sell an endless amount of garbage information called something like "The Extreme Freakishly Massive Monster Revolutionary 2 Week Mass Program."

Yet, inside this 1950 gym, there are strong, manly men with amazing, "classic" physiques that are reminiscent of ancient Greek statues. Men like Steve Reeves and John Grimek possessed the kind of physiques we now consider to not only be classic, but also healthy, real, balanced, and inspirational!

How did these men build those bodies?

In this book, wise and legendary men of the past will tell you how...in their own words.

These legends of the pre-steroid era share with you the wisdom, training principles and techniques they used to build their bodies- all straight from their mouths (or more accurately, their old school typewriters).

In this book, you will learn:
*13 principles of sculpting a classic physique
*Several program methods favored by the legends
*Which exercises should make up the bulk of your training
*What techniques they often added to their programs
*A simple and effective way to structure your yearly muscle building program
*Simple nutrition advice from he legends

How to Sculpt the Classic Physique was written in hopes of sharing the wisdom these amazing men had learned in their years in the gym and aimed to share with you through their writings, allowing you to also achieve the classic physique.

All it takes is proper knowledge, a dedicated effort in weight training, nutritious food and proper rest- and you can do it as they did: without the need of dangerous steroids or even modern day supplements.

Be careful about labeling this book as a "bodybuilding book," for it is not really about bodybuilding as we have come to know it today. This book is really about sculpting the "classic physique."

By Steve
I've been working out for over 10 years, and have sometimes wondered whether it is possible to achieve serious results without resorting to pharmaceutical assistance (if I may put it that way). This book gives a really useful overview of the workout regimes and approaches of the pre-steroid weight-lifters. It's a eye-opener. The book is premised on the fact that the classic muscle-building guys from the pre-steroids days couldn't cheat - so they worked hard and worked right. Andora gives a concise breakdown of what they did to achieve the results they did, and how we can maintain constant growth and strength gain using those same techniques. In fact, if you, like me, have tried 'everything', and are looking for help from real experts, this is a good book to refer to - it's well-research and cleverly put together, includes loads of tips on nutrition, training programs, and is filled with quotes from the legends like Steve Reeves and Vince Gironda. I found this book really useful.

A rare gem indeed
By John Pilgrim
If you are picking up this book, you most likely have read its companion, THE GOLDEN AGE. This book continues the exploits of the children introduced in the first volume. Veddy, veddy English. Completely delightful, though.
I am not sure today's children would enjoy this book. The 19th Century British-isms will probably be quite tedious to any but the most precocious of children. And nothing really "happens" so to speak. No adventures of overwhelming magnitude. Rather, the children's imagination governs what happens throughout the book. Small things are turned into events of great importance. Children brought up with video games will most likely be bored. But for an adult, ahhh! This is a find. It will make you yearn for the idyllic childhood you never had or anybody had for that matter.
Each chapter is like sunlight shining on a bead of dew in April. Or something similarily poetic. Grahame's the better writer anyway.

Recalls the past
By Erica A. Corbett
I'm sorry to see that Grahame's "Dream Days" is so unavailable. It's a deeply enjoyable book that demonstrates the power of "stories" to pull us out of the here and now and make us to stand up straighter, to imagine ourselves as knights and ladies. Grahame's book would be great for older children (young ones may find themselves fidgeting - there is a certain amount of description and archaic language). Adults may actually enjoy this one more than kids. Reading it brought back to me the days of my youth, when a good story could fire my imagination for days, and the characters lived right along side of me, as sort of doppelgangers. This story reminds me of E. Nesbit, another great Edwardian children's writer. Children should read these books, they are well-written and can help foster a love for the "right word" and the well-turned phrase. Try to find a copy with Parrish's illustrations. This whole book is just a wonderful aesthetic experience.

A delightful surprise
By Mike
I admit it: I bought the Wordsworth paperback edition of this book for one reason -- its cover. Not being a great fan of Wind in the Willows, I was a little leary of what I'd find inside, but have discovered that Grahame's use of language and subtle depiction of character are quite delicious. This would be great for reading aloud to a bright child who enjoys words. That said, it would have to be a child with a sophisticated sense of humour: while Grahame describes everything from the viewpoint of a child's imagination, I get the feeling he's really smiling at the adults over the top of said child's head. I can't wait to read The Golden Gate, which Grahame published a few years before this book.

Entrepreneurial Leadership: Finding Your Calling, Making a Difference, by Richard J. Goossen, R. Paul Stevens

What does good theology have to do with good entrepreneurship? In this pioneering work, Richard Goossen and R. Paul Stevens have written what many are already declaring to be the essential resource for Christian entrepreneurial leadership, based on exhaustive research, practical experience and decades of teaching marketplace theology. Entrepreneurial Leadership addresses both the "how-come" and the "how-to," not only grounding the entrepreneurial calling in its proper source in the triune God but also providing practical guides for how to be an effective leader. Be inspired to find your calling and to make a difference in the marketplace, church and beyond.

Review
"Goossen and Steven write compellingly on matters that both the church and Christian entrepreneurs need to get to grips with; for this reason I recommend this book as a must-read for church leaders and entrepreneurs." (Kina Robertshaw, Faith in Business Quarterly Journal, Volume 16:2)

"Goossen and Stevens bring clarity to an issue that is relevant for many business people, and offer sound principles for how entrepreneurial leaders can more effectively tap their potential and make an impact in the marketplace and the church." (Jeff Huebner, MB Herald, September 2013)

"Stevens and Goossen vividly demonstrate how we can effectively integrate business and entrepreneurship with our faith. This book has profound implications not only for individuals but for the nations as well. If Christians operated business in accordance with biblical principles, we could make a difference in this world." (Mary Grace Sumbillo, human resource and organizational development consultant, Christ@Work Philippines Inc., Philippines)

"This is a must-read for all Christian entrepreneurs! We are surrounded by cutting-edge books, journals and magazine articles on the how-tos of entrepreneurship, but little has been said about combining the how-tos with the how-comes. Christian entrepreneurs have a bigger calling; they need to build a viable business, but also a business that is pleasing to God and builds the community. This book brings together an entrepreneur and a theologian to present a Christian concept of entrepreneurship and work. What does God's unfolding of creation have to inform us about entrepreneurship and innovation? How can a business become a location for spiritual formation? How do we manage ourselves to be better entrepreneurial leaders, and how can entrepreneurs engage their churches and the wider community to make a difference?" (Clive Lim, managing director, LEAP International Pte Ltd., Singapore)

"This book is a captivating effort by Rick Goossen and Paul Stevens to integrate two big themes theologically and practically--entrepreneurship and leadership. Indeed, this book is a handy tool made available for theologians, pastors and marketplace Christians." (Cheong Seng Gee, executive director, P.O.D. Advisory, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

"Paul Stevens and Rick Goossen have done marvelous work in integrating faith and entrepreneurial work as well as balancing theological and practical needs. This book helps me to reflect more in-depth on my practice of entrepreneurship. It guides me to form a solid framework to continue in mentoring and coaching Kingdom entrepreneurs in Asia. I pray that this book will inspire those who respond to God's call in becoming Kingdom entrepreneurial leaders to become salt and light to the world through their work." (Jimmy Pak, founder and managing director of Net-Makers Limited, Hong Kong, and coordinator of Toys Christian Fellowship, Hong Kong)

"This is a book for anyone--whether business person, student, social worker, factory worker or pastor--based on the premise that everyone has a calling and an inborn desire to make a difference. Stevens and Goossen have deftly fused the realities of entrepreneurial leadership with the truth that God made us and calls us to entrepreneurial activity in all spheres of our life. This book also makes an excellent textbook for equipping students to have a transformative impact locally and globally in their individual spheres through the integration of their faith and their work." (Gwen Dewey, academic dean, Bakke Graduate University)

"Entrepreneurial Leadership provides a fresh biblical perspective on the concept of entrepreneurship. It is cognitive, critiquing humanistic understandings, reflective and practical. The sober approach to the subject especially in relation to wealth creation and loving your neighbour through work is much needed in the African Christian context which tends to gravitate toward the health-and-wealth extremes." (Dwight Mutonono, Leadership Institute, Harare, Zimbabwe)

"Entrepreneurship is often perceived as opportunistic or risk-taking but is seldom associated with leadership. Unless we understand that an entrepreneur is also a leader it is difficult for the entrepreneur to be influential enough to make a difference. The authors have done an excellent job helping us to appreciate the association, but more importantly they show that we are created to make this happen. Becoming an entrepreneur and leader at the same time is natural and not mission impossible!" (Jeremy Gwee, CEO, Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Singapore)

"Entrepreneurs can be most challenging for any organization, yet they are so critical at the time called for change. As the boundaries between church and marketplace are diminishing, we need a book to explore the entrepreneurial leadership which combines both how-tos and how-comes and carries a strong biblical perspective. This is the book." (Joseph Pai, chairman, Ogilvy & Mather Taiwan)

"Richard Goossen and Paul Stevens present a comprehensive and exhaustive treatise on entrepreneurial leadership that relates entrepreneurship to calling, giftedness and God's purposes. It is an excellent book on integrating faith and work, meaning and work ethic, soul and spirituality, and the essence and practice of entrepreneurial leadership. The book compares the humanist and Christian models of entrepreneurship which is very helpful for those seeking deeper meaning in their work and business. I will recommend this as a textbook for our MBA students in Manila." (Zenet Maramara, director, Center for Biblical Stewardship, Asian Theological Seminary, Manila, Philippines)

"This book shows us that we can accept the challenge to lead by example within the creative and entrepreneurial character gifted to all of us by our Creator. This is the guide to a real, working model for leadership and entrepreneurship, showing us that the key to the invigoration of our whole person and calling is found in Christ." (Allen Knight, assistant professor of marketing, Gainey School of Business, Spring Arbor University)

"The church has long had an uneasy relationship with businesspeople. Too often entrepreneurs are regarded as second-class Christians, useful only for their financial contributions to fund the 'real' work of ministry. That's a shame. And that's why Entrepreneurial Leadership is such an important book. It not only counters this dangerous misperception, it equips entrepreneurs with the tools they need to live out their callings for God. Goossen and Stevens are gifted guides, adept at helping Christians understand and practice entrepreneurial leadership. I'll be recommending this book to every business and church leader I know." (Drew Dyck, managing editor of Leadership Journal)

"The partnership of Rick Goossen and Paul Stevens has produced a compelling and useful compilation of theological and practical insights. The book is rooted in the enduring truths of Scripture as well as the lessons learned from interviewing hundreds of Christian entrepreneurs. This will be an encouraging and helpful resource for those who find their calling in entrepreneurship." (Mitchell J. Neubert, Chavanne Chair of Christian Ethics in Business and associate professor of management and entrepreneurship, Baylor University)

"Anyone who wants to be his/her own boss--to pursue opportunity and risk responsibility--should think about God as entrepreneur. Goossen and Stevens bring an entrepreneurial God into dialogue with the successful leaders of their research to enrich and enlarge our understanding of what it means to be an entrepreneurial leader and a follower of Jesus in the workplace, the church and the world. This book will make you think about who you are, why you do what you do and how you do it." (Walter C. Wright Jr., former executive director, De Pree Leadership Center, Fuller Theological Seminary)

"This book is a masterpiece! God's Holy Spirit is infused in Rick and Paul's comprehensive writing and into the perspective that God wants to use us to make a difference for him in our sphere of influence. Reading and applying this book has the potential to change your business and your life--NOW!" (Terry Smith, Smith Gardens, Bellingham, Washington)

"There are so many books on leadership in the market that one wonders if there is need for another. However, Entrepreneurial Leadership: Finding Your Calling, Making a Difference demonstrates that the topic is far from exhausted. The rigorous, scholarly, yet popularly articulated research and ideas of Stevens's and Goossen's book truly command thought and reflection on the part of both established leaders and those just entering the roller-coaster world of guiding and directing others in the pursuit of a large vision. I'm impressed. I think you will be too." (Jim Cantelon, president of Visionledd (www.visionledd.com) and author of When God Stood Up)

"Wow! Entrepreneurial Leadership is chock-full of wisdom, insight and provocative spiritual sidebars. Don't speed-read this gem--you'll miss the meat. Goossen and Stevens don't just plow new ground--they dig deep. Their harvest is rich with meticulous and fascinating research from real-life entrepreneurs. I was sobered and convicted, then inspired. The risk-taking God. The temptations of reward-seeking. Five misunderstandings of calling. Managing your own ego. Why entrepreneurs struggle with church. It's all there--and more. It's an entrepreneurial feast. I'm buying a case of books for my entrepreneurial colleagues and the pastors who don't get it--yet!" (John Pearson, author of Mastering the Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Nonprofit)

"At last, public policy, business, academic and church leaders are beginning to come together to explore the pivotal role that entrepreneurs play in value creation and societal well-being. For decades, Rick Goossen and Paul Stevens have been at the forefront of empowering such conversations, bringing together diverse communities to explore the creative and redemptive nature of work in all of life's settings. I can think of no better guide to assist Christian entrepreneurs in their mission-critical journey." (John R. Terrill, director of the Center for Integrity in Business, Seattle Pacific University)

"Rick Goossen and Paul Stevens have drawn upon many years of experience, reflection and research to craft a thoughtful and truly unique volume. This book should be widely read, as it is brimming with theological and practical insights that apply to entrepreneurial leadership as it is practiced in many settings." (Kenman Wong, professor, Seattle Pacific University, and coauthor, Business for the Common Good: A Christian Vision for the Marketplace)

"Evangelicals for much of the twentieth century ignored the political, economic and social marketplace, focusing instead on preparation for a more heavenly world. Goossen and Stevens break out of those fences, leading us to understand the Christ-given gift of the entrepreneur. This comprehensive treatment of Christ-centeredness in the marketplace provides a curriculum, offering wisdom, encouragement and counsel in this vital arena. It is not too much to say this book is an historic breakthrough on a subject too long ignored. I've begun my list of those to whom I will send a copy." (Brian C. Stiller, global ambassador, the World Evangelical Alliance, and president emeritus, Tyndale University College & Seminary)

"Richard J. Goossen has been for years speaking to successful entrepreneurs, organizing entrepreneurship conferences and writing on entrepreneurship. R. Paul Stevens has been for years speaking as a marketplace theologian and advocating the integration of faith and work. There are numerous good features in this joint work. I like in particular the quote in the beginning and the mini Bible study at the end of each chapter. The quote points to the key concept in that chapter. The mini Bible study encourages readers to have a biblical foundation to nurture ideas." (Kam-hon Lee, emeritus professor of marketing, The Chinese University of Hong Kong)

"This book is critical for the twenty-first-century follower of Jesus. No one has thought more deeply and intentionally than Paul Stevens about the call to be faithful in the places that God locates us. The addition of Rick Goosen's input on entrepreneurial leadership, however, takes it to a new level. The call to be transformative locally and globally is both a practical and thoughtful theological conversation that weaves both the 'Why?' and the 'How?' accessibly. It helps us understand our call. This is a must-read for anyone thinking about faithful and 'salty' living." (Gary V. Nelson, president, Tyndale University College and Seminary, and author of Borderland Churches)

"Today more than ever we need Christian entrepreneurs who impact every area of society for the kingdom. Rick Goossen and Paul Stevens have provided a tremendous resource that not only envisions entrepreneurs but also provides practical insights built on a solid biblical foundation. Applying the principles in this book, leaders empowered by the Holy Spirit can change the world." (Geoff Tunnicliffe, CEO/secretary general, World Evangelical Alliance)

"This is an important book that brings together the best research and a great deal of real-world experience. I believe this book is a very beneficial addition to help reframe how we think about Christian entrepreneurs and, more importantly, it is a book that will help entrepreneurs understand how they can use their entrepreneurial talents and drive to contribute to making the world a better place for all." (Karl Moore, Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University, recently ranked among the world's greatest business thinkers by Business Strategy Review, published by the London Business School)

"This book by Richard Goossen and R. Paul Stevens focuses on both the spirituality of being an entrepreneurial leader and the practical aspects of being one. In its ten chapters, the authors first address the essence of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial leadership, humanistic and Christian models of entrepreneurship, and the meaning and importance of work. The remaining chapters focus on the risks and rewards of being an entrepreneurial leader, finding the right opportunity, aspects of being an entrepreneurial leader and making a difference. By uniquely addressing both aspects clearly and concisely with examples, it is a must-read for anyone starting or already involved in a Christian activity. The book equips individuals from all walks of life to be the entrepreneurial leaders so needed in today's world." (Robert D. Hisrich, Garvin Professor of Global Entrepreneurship and director, Walker Center for Global Entrepreneurship, Thunderbird School of Global Management)

"This seminal book on 'the lost notion of calling' and the inner voice of the entrepreneur breaks new ground, is supported by firm research and is rooted in the spiritual capital of the Christian tradition. Anyone trying to find their way in the maze of the marketplace would be better informed by reading it!" (Theodore Roosevelt Malloch, research professor, Yale University, and author of Doing Virtuous Business)

"Dr. Goossen is a valuable resource for the church as it deals with what it means to be followers of Christ in our daily work, including the field of business." (Gerald Gerbrandt, president, Canadian Mennonite University)

"Rick Goossen is the renaissance man of entrepreneurship. With Canadian and US law degrees, he has the legal knowledge. He founded and runs a business that raises money for entrepreneurs, so he has the financial knowledge. He teaches entrepreneurial skills at the university level, so he has the academic knowledge. And perhaps most importantly, all of Goossen's entrepreneurial knowledge and work is guided by his unique, values-driven view of enterprise. Rick Goossen is an entrepreneur for all seasons." (Larry C. Farrell, chairman of The Farrell Company, Phoenix, and author of Searching For The Spirit Of Enterprise, The Entrepreneurial Age and Getting Entrepreneurial!)

"Rick Goossen is passionate about helping Christian men and women rethink how they do business for Christ's sake. The message is clear: God's call on our lives is all-encompassing. Our work life is simply one part of the larger fabric of who and what God calls us to be in the world." (John H. Unger, senior pastor, Ft. Garry Mennonite Brethren Church, Winnipeg, MB)

"I commend Richard Goossen's work because of what he represents as both a practicing businessperson and academic professor. He is himself an entrepreneur; he knows what he is talking about from experience. Yet he is also a careful student, well-read in a variety of areas including marketplace theology. We need individuals who can straddle the two worlds, who can speak both the language of the boardroom and of the classroom. Such people are rare, but Richard Goossen is one of them. He understands what is necessary to run a successful business and at the same time is mindful of the disciplines of serious academic research." (Richard Higginson, director, Ridley Hall Foundation, Cambridge, UK)

"When entrepreneurship and authentic Christianity converge, the impact is almost always transformational. We see this in history and we see it today, all over the world. As this book represents that convergence, prepare for the transformational mission to which you'll be called!" (Peter S. Heslam, Transforming Business, faculty of divinity, University of Cambridge, UK)

"This blend of Christian anthropology, sociological research and pioneering discipleship should trigger new fruitfulness in many lives." (J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College)

Stop Squelching Entrepreneurs!
By John W. Pearson
Do you work with a serial entrepreneur, perhaps on your board or in your department--and you're scratching your head wondering, "What makes this person tick and how can I leverage their gifts without going nuts myself?"--then have I got a book for you!

Rick Goossen and Paul Stevens have written a brilliant gift book to the church, Entrepreneurial Leadership: Finding Your Calling, Making a Difference. Two big issues jumped out immediately:
* Why entrepreneurs struggle in their relationship with the church.
* Why the church struggles with entrepreneurs.

"Let's be frank," Goossen and Stevens admit, "entrepreneurs are not always the easiest people to deal with. In fact entrepreneurs may be among the most challenging for any organization. They can be impatient, action-oriented and nonbureaucratic."

They add, "The challenge for the church is to harness, rather than squelch, the energies and passions of entrepreneurs in their midst."

Since 2004, Goossen has interviewed over 250 entrepreneurs, compiling massive data on the intersection of Christian faith and entrepreneurship. Probing entrepreneurs in Europe, Africa and North America, the "Entrepreneurial Leader Research Program" is unequaled in its depth and practical conclusions and is based on responses to the "Entrepreneurial Leader Questionnaire."

Up front, the authors address the big question--is entrepreneurship inborn or can it be taught? They quote Peter Drucker ("Entrepreneurship is neither a science nor an art. It is a practice.") and balance the sages with the practitioners (It can't be taught. "You either have it in you or you don't.")

They land on five tenants of entrepreneurship:
* Innovation
* Seizing opportunities
* Gaining personal satisfaction through innovation
* Doing risk analysis
* Developing entrepreneurial habits

I've focused on the entrepreneurial theme in previous book reviews, including:
Corporate Entrepreneurship: How to Create a Thriving Entrepreneurial Spirit Throughout Your Company (Robert D. Hisrich and Claudine Kearney), Entrepreneurship (Hisrich, Peters and Shepherd), and Pastorpreneur: Creative Ideas for Birthing Spiritual Life in Your Community(John Jackson).

But what does all of this have to do with Christ-followers who are blessed with entrepreneurial leadership gifts? Here's where Goossen and Stevens deliver a mammoth gift to our theology of work and entrepreneurship. If you're a Jesus person, your understanding of entrepreneurship will be skewed without their insight. Newly plowed ground includes:
* Why they do not use the term "Christian entrepreneur" and what they mean by the "Christian" work heresy.
* The difference between humanist and Christian models of entrepreneurship.
* In discussing what leaders do, they cite biblical examples of good and bad leaders. (The bad list: King Saul, Diotrephes, and King Solomon. The good list: Nehemiah, Daniel, David, Paul and Jesus.)
* On "Soul & Spirituality" they discuss "the marketplace as a location for spiritual formation" and why "marketplace spirituality" is not an oxymoron.
* On the much debated topic, "Meaning & Work Ethic," they are provocative with an Old Testament case study in "meaningless work."
* Why good theology is a foundation for good entrepreneurship.
* On the issues of "Risk and Reward," taste these tidbits: The Risk-Taking God, Reframing the Pursuit of Rewards, and The Temptations of Reward-Seeking.

Amazingly jam-packed with resource-rich footnotes (almost every page) that support their fresh and concise thinking, every chapter delivers. Example: "Five Understandings of Calling." One myth: "Calling is a one-time event."

In their very practical treatment on "Practicing Entrepreneurial Leadership," they tackle seven principles including: Knowing to What You Are Called, Engaging in Spiritual Disciplines, and Managing Your Own Ego. (Good news: "The most quoted verse among Entrepreneurial Leaders is Micah 6:8.")

In the "Sustaining Entrepreneurial Leadership" chapter, there are seven more principles--all keepers: 1) Sharing Faith Responsibly, 2) Avoiding Hypocrisy, 3) Dealing with Betrayal, 4) Balancing the Serpent and the Dove, 5) Handling Both Financial Rewards and Losses, 6) Giving Effectively, and 7) Managing the Work-Life Tension.

"Along with an entrepreneur's wallet," warn the authors, "comes his entrepreneurial spirit." And if all the entrepreneur senses is criticism in the use of his or her gifts, this will lead from "disenchantment to disenfranchisement."

How can you not order a case of these books? Give this book to your entrepreneurial colleagues, pastors and nonprofit leaders who must address this egregious entrepreneur-church gap. It's a perfect group study book: each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion, plus a mini Bible study.

The book concludes with a powerful 26-line "Entrepreneurial Commission" so your church or ministry can mark the beginning of a new era: leveraging entrepreneurial gifts out of the spectator-heavy pews and into the world. ("Take wise risks knowing that your gracious God is inviting you so to do...")

Thoughtful guide for Christian Entreprenuers!
By James R. V. Matichuk
Goosen interviewed approximately 250 Christian entreprepreneurs on the intersection of their faith and life's work. His findings form the research basis of this book. He and Stevens are apt at making biblical and theological connections as they explore the theme of entrepreneurship. They begin their book by defining the essence of entrepreneurship and leadership (chapter one and two). Chapter three contrasts (secular) humanist models of entrepreneurship with the Christian model. While the secular model offers a personal narrative, a mechanistic view of the universe and a focus on personal fulfillment the Christian approach to entrepreneurship has a `God-narrative,' a transcendent, supernatural view of the universe and a focus on serving God through God-given spiritual gifts.

Chapters four through seven explicate their particular Christian approach to entrepreneurship. In Chapter four, Goossen and Stevens discuss the nature of `soul and spirituality.' They present the soul as a whole ( both physical and spiritual). This means that the spiritual life cannot be compartmentalized from our work life. In chapter five they discuss the meaning of work and the satisfaction work brings (and does not bring!). Chapter six explores the Christian approach to risks and rewards while chapter seven explores the nature of calling in relationship to entrepreneurship.

The final three chapters focus on how compelling Christian, entrepreneurial leadership is lived out. Goossen and Stevens explore principles and practices that will nourish and sustain Christian entrepreneurs and the ways churches can support the entrepreneurs in their midst.

One of the gifts of this book is that Goossen and Stevens baptize business as a Christian vocation and provide encouraging words for entrepreneurs of faith. They offer wisdom for entrepreneurs about how to live faithfully to their calling and how to live faithfully through their calling. This makes this a great book for business people and leaders. I would say it is one of the most thoughtful books of its kind.

The part of this book I found most helpful was Goossen and Stevens discussion of how the Christian understanding of entrepreneurship stands in opposition to a humanist understanding of it. Too many Christian leaders approach business literature uncritically and apply `principles' to the church without properly considering the telos of a market-driven approach (where the bottom line is the bottom line). By critiquing the humanist approach to entrepreneurship, Goossen and Stevens are able to replace it with something more theologically sound. Sure, Christian entrepreneurs also want to be successful, but their vision for business is more robust than amassing personal wealth and security. Christian entrepreneurial leaders are Christians who seek to be faithful to their calling in business (or the church and non-profit sector). Business and entrepreneurship is not working for filthy lucre but an opportunity to participate in what the triune God is doing in the market and to live and act faithfully for him there.

For the most part I found their insights theologically and biblically rich. Occasionally their interpretation of the Bible is more evocative than exact (i.e. I thought their interpretation of how Jesus' temptation in the wilderness relates to Christian entrepreneurship was overreaching a tad). This is a small criticism. Most of the time I found their reading of passages legitimate; there is only couple of places where my inner-exegete was bothered.

I recommend this book highly for business minded Christians who are looking for a theological understanding of business and what it means to be faithful to God in the marketplace. I give this book ★★★★.

Thank you to InterVarsity Press and Adrianna Wright for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for this review.

Lots to think about
By Clint Walker
I come to this book with a different attitude than most I am sure. I am not really an entrepreneur--yet. At least in the classical sense. I am not one who goes out on new ventures and starts new things and takes fantastic risks. Nor do I really have a lot of experience in the business world. To be honest, I went "all in" with ministry in college and really never looked back.

On the other hand, there are some things I do, even in ministry that people would find entrepreneurial. I try to innovate, and enjoy doing so. I work to help the congregations I serve as a pastor to transition from being internally focused to being externally focused. I try to look toward the future instead of simply preserving the gains of the past.

At the same time, the theme both in a colleague's blog, conversations with members of my church, as well as some reading I have been doing seem to endorse what is often called the "side hustle". That is, attempting to have an entrepreneurial venture that compliments the current work I am doing. I am not sure what that is yet, unless it has to do with writing, but it is something I am thinking about.

What this book on entrepreneurial leadership does is show you how to develop innovative business ventures that get you in touch with your calling, help you take steps toward fulfilling that calling, and helping you take those steps grounded in your Christian faith.

The authors encourage reading the book a little bit at a time. Read one chapter a week, they advise, putting the principles you learn into practice. I can attest to this, this book gives you lots to consider and practically apply.

The seventh edition of John E. Freund's Mathematical Statistics, like the first six editions, is designed primarily for a two-semester or a three-quarter calculus-based introduction to the mathematics of statistics. It can used, however, for a single-semester course, emphasizing probability, probability distributions and densities, sampling, and classical statistical inference. For this purpose, the authors recommend that the course be based on Chapters 1-6, 8, 11, and 13. In addition, Sections 2.8, 4.8, 5.8, 5.9, 6.7, 8.7, and 13.8 may be omitted. In teaching this abbreviated course, the instructor may facilitate fitting the material into the time allotted by choosing several other sections to de-emphasize.

The major departure in this edition is the addition of a section at the end of each chapter, called "The Theory in Practice," and dealing in greater depth with some of the applications of the theory. The applied exercises in each chapter have been grouped together at the end of this new section. Subheadings have been supplied to indicate which exercises go with which section or sections to aid the instructor in assigning homework exercises.

Many students taking this course are experiencing the ideas of statistics for the first time. It is believed that it will be helpful for them to spend some time learning how the mathematical ideas of statistics carry over into the world of applications. To emphasize this new treatment, the authors have added "with Applications" to the title of the text. In addition, further emphasis has been placed on the use of computers in performing statistical calculations. Several new exercises have been added, many of which require the use of a computer. New material has been added to Chapter 15, placing additional emphasis on experimental design and factorial experiments.

We would like to express our appreciation to the Robert E. Krieger Publishing Company for permission to base Table II on E. C. Molina's Poisson's Exponential Binomial Limit; to Prentice Hall, Inc., for permission to reproduce part of Table IV from R. A. Johnson and D. W. Auble to base Table XI on his "Extended Tables for the Mann-Whitney Statistics," Bulletin of the Institute of Educational Research at Indiana University; to the editor of the Annals of Mathematical Statistics to reproduce the material in Table XII; and to MINITAB to reproduce the computer printouts shown in the text.

The authors would especially like to express their appreciation to the reviewers of the manuscript, Johana Hardin of Pomona College, Christopher Lake of Rowan University, Jackie Miller of Drury University, and Larry Stephens of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, whose suggestions the authors found helpful in the preparation of this new edition. The authors also would like to thank the staff at Prentice Hall for their courteous cooperation in the production of this book.

Not enough Pictures
By Patrick D. Haney
Yes, even at the collegiate level, pictures are needed. The example problems rarely drew the diagrams/pictures. Also many of the problems refer back to previous examples in different chapters. For example, a problem in Ch 7 has us take the information for a problem in chapter 3; without a corresponding page number. Also the lay out of book is very compact. I wish the authors did not squeeze so much information on one page. The could have used more space, showed much more algebra steps, and MORE DIAGRAMS.

Avoid
By William T. Mccafferty
I'm taking a course in statistics as an independent study using this book. It might have been better had I been taking a class with a professor helping me understand the problems, but trying to understand with just this book is next to impossible. The examples skip steps, which I suppose I am just suppose to know, with no explanation or note that there have been operations omitted. This is very confusing. I have been teaching math for 34 years and feel I can follow the flow of a problem, but I teach my students to include everything to make sure their work is understood. Even the examples that are worked out sometimes have little to do with the problems that you are asked to solve. All in all, I feel this book is not well written for someone trying to learn these processes.

terrible book
By Wei Chen
I am using this textbook in an undergraduate class on mathematical statistics. The book has many misspelling even at places where comprehension could be jeopardized. Many exercises tells you to refer to previous exercises which you may not have already solved. In general it is annoying that the book has too many references to previous results that are not even that important; you have to do a lot of page flipping. The textbook could have benefited from providing more examples as usually the examples after a section don't cover all that is discussed. Important results do not stand out enough for easy access and sometimes there are hidden parameters buried in the text before a theorem. There really is nothing special about this book. All problems are pretty straightforward computations. The text avoids proving how a result is derived when it is beyond the level of the text. This makes it seem like I am just plugging in formulas rather than understanding the theory. At this level, there should be better books out there. Considering how basic the book is, the price alone should dissuade you from buying it.

Great Introduction To The History Of The United States
By Tay
I've always been interested in history, but my biggest issue was where to start. I am happy to say that this book gave me a great foundation to work with. This book primarily focuses on the Native Americans, African Slaves, British, Spanish, French and the Dutch involvement in the formation of the United States. It was great to see everyone represented, although I would've liked to read more about the African American experience. The African Americans experience was often brought up in various chapters, but they were usually small passages. They even had one chapter, although short compared to the others. It's not a big issue, but I would have at least liked to have a section dedicated to the lives of freed African Americans and their experiences, but what I mention next makes up for it. What I liked most about the book was how they provided additional books at the bottom of pages in case the reader wanted to look further into a topic that was being read at the moment. Including the books at the bottom of the page, for me, is better than shoving them in the back of the book for me to never pay attention to. But anyway, this book was a great starting point, and from it, you will definitely have more to look forward to if you're interested in history.

This is an excellent review of American colonial history
By Renee
This is an excellent review of American colonial history, stopping just before the tensions that led to the Revolutionary war. Middleton does an excellent job including new scholarship, as well as unbiased material on Native Americans. The first part of this book is a chronological review that follows the events one after another, though it's so wide ranging it can occasionally be somewhat confusing. The second half switches to a more thematic review. It would have been more helpful had Middleton included the thematic review alongside the chronological, having two parts as he does tends to confuse issues. Still, this would be an excellent resource for advanced high schoolers, or undergraduate university students.

A more current academic book on early America.
By Amazon Customer
Very informative, accurate and well written. Middleton is able to separate fact from conjecture, but also challenge the status quo. He incorporates relatively new (newish) research findings. Although I have not finished the book, I would recommend it.

Geometry of Riemann Surfaces (London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series)From Brand: Cambridge University Press

Riemann surfaces is a thriving area of mathematics with applications to hyperbolic geometry, complex analysis, fractal geometry, conformal dynamics, discrete groups, geometric group theory, algebraic curves and their moduli, various kinds of deformation theory, coding, thermodynamic formalism, and topology of three-dimensional manifolds. This collection of articles, authored by leading authorities in the field, comprises 16 expository essays presenting original research and expert surveys of important topics related to Riemann surfaces and their geometry. It complements the body of recorded research presented in the primary literature by broadening, re-working and extending it in a more focused and less formal framework, and provides a valuable commentary on contemporary work in the subject. An introductory section sets the scene and provides sufficient background to allow graduate students and research workers from other related areas access to the field.
