Of Permanent Value: The Story of Warren Buffett/2012 Odyssey Edition, written by Andrew Kilpatrick is a must read for all Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway fans. Value investors (or anyone who is interested in investing in stock/business for that matter) will also benefit greatly from this book. There are so many important things to learn about Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway, and Of Permanent Value is a perfect way to learn them all. This book also covers important people around Warren Buffett which helps me understand how Buffett become the person he is today: his philosophies, his views on life, and how he interact with other people. I learned so much from Of Permanent Value, and over the years, Of Permanent Value filled with Buffett's teaching and experiences, helps me to shape my investing philosophies, develop my competencies, and keeping things in perspective.

Kudos to Andy Kilpatrick for putting this book together and continue to update the story about the greatest value investor of our time. I also appreciate Andy Kilpatrick's and Warren Buffett's sense of humor.

An example of learning from the 2010 letter to shareholder that might worth documenting (this is actually one paragraph that excites me the most out of the entire letter, which I think Warren, Andy and other fellow value investors would understand why): "Other companies we hold are likely to increase their dividend as well. Coca-Cola paid us $88 million in 1995, the year after we finished purchasing the stock. Every year since, Coke has increase its dividend. In 2011, we will almost certainly receive $376 million from Coke, up to $24 million from last year. Within ten years, I would expect that $376 million to double. By the end of that period, I wouldn't be surprised to see our share of coke's annual earnings exceed 100% of what we paid for investment. Time is the friend of the wonderful business"

Here are some of the example of the chapters that I like:

First is when Warren need to make a decision who would run Salomon ($150B institution with 8000 employees) within 2 days during their first crisis. There are 12 top-level managers that he interviewed. "This was the most important hire of my life", said Warren to the Columbia business students. The chapter explain his thought process of this candidate selection in detail. Warren mentioned that the good news (for the students and the candidate) is that he didn't ask what their grades were. Warren also said, "Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy. and if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you. if you think about it, it's true, if you hire somebody without integrity, you want them to be dumb and lazy". And he conclude the topic with this statement which I think is very powerful: "Pick the kind of person to work for you that you want to marry your son or daughter. You won't go wrong". By the way, he picked Deryck Maughan for his integrity.

Second example of the chapter that I really like is how Warren put the audience of more than 2000 people through Business School in an electrifying two minutes. See how Warren answer the question of "Will developments in the generic brand area hurt coca-cola?" which is a very important questions. He explains in a nutshell with all the details and numbers how business and competition works, and using several other example like Gillette, Marlboro, Sam Cola etc, he convinced the audience that coca cola is considered immune to generics. He explains how one can save $500 for smoking generic brand vs Marlboro which is a lot of money. While a man will probably will only save $11 per year by not using Gillette Sensor and probably also leave band-aids on his face and an uncomfortable experience for opting for generics/lower quality blades. And for coca cola, the net profit margin is only 1 cents per serving (can) while a lot of the ingredients cost (such as the aluminum close to 6 cents a can, sugar 1.3 ounce per can or 1.75 cents etc) the same regardless for coke or other cola company.

I learn so much from Of Permanent Value (both from Warren Buffett and Andy Kilpatrick), and I hope you enjoy and learn from this book as much as I do. I can't wait for the next edition and to see what Warren Buffett next capital allocation move is.

Comprehensive and easy to read. I would prefer that the pictures had higher resolution (some pictures are of letters and low resolution makes the text difficult to read). Still, I highly recommend the writings of Andrew Kilpatrick.

A must have study guide for new 2016 SAT format

[[VIDEOID:3a188cb227171814e0971f700087a3ef]] Everything you need to study for the new SAT test is in the book. I was impressed with how well it is laid out. Very user friendly. Contains great and necessary information.

What's in this book:
1. First section talks about the layout of the test, what has changed and test taking strategies.
2. Second section is a complete diagnostic SAT test. At the end there is an answer key, plus explanations for the correct answer.
3. The middle chapters cover each section of the test, gives you things to study and ways to approach the material.
4. At the end of the book there are two more practice tests.

There is no CD included with additional information, The app that goes with this book is simply a calendar tool that helps you keep on track with your test prep. Everything you need to study for the test in contained in the book, which is reflected in its reasonable price.

Practice math tests are best suited to high scorers

I am a private math tutor and purchased this book because it got so many favorable reviews. I only looked at the practice tests and only the math sections so my review is limited (others have commented on the general review portion which comprises the bulk of the book). In my opinion the practice tests in this book are more difficult than what can be expected on the new SAT (though it is anybody's guess at this point). I intend to use these practice tests for stronger students seeking very high scores.

Also, I found a small error on the last problem on page 581. The solution on page 603 of the book is based on a 45 degree angle, but the angle in the problem on page 581 is 44 degrees. Therefore the solution and answer key are incorrect.

I don't like this edition quite as much as the old one

I don't like this edition quite as much as the old one. It's a small thing, but the pages with the practice tests aren't shaded on the edges anymore. Also, I don't like the vocab section as well. I loved the old format with smaller sections of roots and words with worksheets after each 7 lessons. I know there aren't vocal questions anymore per se, but a strong word base is even more important than ever in the reading section. Finally, I don't feel the sections are broken up as well for focusing on a particular area of weakness as they used to be.

I am a professional SAT/ACT tutor so this is all from the perspective of focusing on individual students and not from an overall guide to use on ones own.

About the Author
John Graham is the D. Richard Mead Professor of Finance at Duke University where he also serves as the Director of the CFO Global Business Outlook survey. He is coeditor of the Journal of Finance. Professor Graham is also a Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, Vice President of the Western Finance Association, and been recognised for outstanding teaching and faculty contributions at Duke and the University of Utah.

Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. A prolific author, Dr. Gitman has published more than 50 articles appearing in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, the FINANCIAL REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL PLANNING, JOURNAL OF RISK AND INSURANCE, FINANCIAL SERVICES REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, FINANCIAL PRACTICE AND EDUCATION, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION, and other scholarly publications. He has authored and coauthored numerous best-selling textbooks on various finance and business topics as well as investing. An active member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Gitman is past president of the Academy of Financial Services, the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Midwest Finance Association, and the FMA National Honor Society. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Dr. Gitman formerly served as a director on the CFP Board of Governors, as vice president of Financial Education for the Financial Management Association, and as director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum. He has two grown children and lives with his wife in La Jolla, California, where he is an avid cyclist.

Michael D. Joehnk is an emeritus professor of finance at Arizona State University. In addition to his academic appointments at ASU, Dr. Joehnk spent a year as a visiting professor of finance at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He received his BA and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona and his MBA from Arizona State University. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), he served as a member of the Candidate Curriculum Committee and of the Council of Examiners of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts. He also served as a director of the Phoenix Society of Financial Analysts and as secretary-treasurer of the Western Finance Association and was elected to two terms as vice president of the Financial Management Association. Dr. Joehnk has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles, five popular books, and numerous monographs. In addition to co-authoring several books with Dr. Gitman, Dr. Joehnk wrote the highly successful paperback tradebook INVESTING FOR SAFETY'S SAKE. He also has served as editor and contributed to several other prominent books. His articles have appeared in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF FINANCE, JOURNAL OF BANK RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS, AAII JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, BELL JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS, DAILY BOND BUYER, FINANCIAL PLANNER, and other publications. This book itself is a quality textbook, however know that you will not get online access codes for myfinancelab.com, which could be critical in your class. You'll have to purchase that at an additional cost. You'll still be able to access a site called Pearson Smart Resources, but if I'm paying around $250 for a textbook, shouldn't registration for all the online materials be included?

On top of that, I didn't even receive a receipt/packing slip in my package for this book.

Watch out!

Incomplete formulas given. Several chapters very poorly organized. Practice quizes available on thier website let you know if you answered incorrectly, but don't offer correct method. Don't consider using with an online class.

Fantastic Investing Textbook that is great for All Knowledge Levels

As far as investing textbooks go this is probably one of the better ones. All to often it seems like textbooks are either too broad and beginner in nature or they're far to advanced and presumably assume you know much more than you do. This one strikes a fine line that makes it a fantastic educational read

A few lines are enough

A poet may live for us through a single poem, or even a few lines. For me the poet Arnold is 'Dover Beach'. " Ah Love, let us be true to one another, for the world which seems to lie before us, like a land of dreams, hath really neither joy nor light nor love nor certitude, nor peace nor help from pain, and we are here , as on a darkling plain, swept with confused alarums, of struggle and flight, where Ignorant armies clash by night."

This great poem written at the threshhold between an Age Dying and another yet to be born is Arnold's signature piece. I also however recommend, and have some knowledge of his long poem 'Sohrab and Rustum'.

Arnold is a poet whose music sometimes fades, but whose quest for moral meaning is regularly present.

He is one of those rare human beings who has written a single poem, a few lines which should be remembered for as long as poetry is read and enjoyed.

A book you'll keep forever!

DOVER BEACH & OTHER POEMS is an excellent collection of the poetry that was written over a period of Arnold's life that began with the optimism of his youth, and an abiding faith in his religious thoughts. Then, in the poems that he wrote as he grew older, we find a mellowed, and more mature concept of living, brought about by the strain, the stress, and the disillusionments that he encountered as he grew older. Arnold began to question (but not reject) many of the philosophical and spiritual values he had been taught by his father. Arnold's father was a Headmaster at Rugby, whom Matthew loved and idealized.

This is a book of poetry of an higher order that you will read once, put it back on your shelf, and then, pick it up later and read it again. With subsequent readings, you will probably enjoy the mature thought and outlook upon life that this man, Matthew Arnold, developed as he grew older. Yes, I enjoy reading this book of poetry, more and more as time goes on, particularly, "Dover Beach" and "The Scholar Gypsy". I believe you will too.
