A sometimes interesting read about an unusual and possibly psychopathic assassin.

I had read and saw the movie based upon the book “the Eiger Sanction” so I was somewhat familiar with this author (Trevanian). I also really loved the character in that book who besides being a professor and lover of art, was also a freelance assassin. I was looking forward to reading this book “Shibumi” (Means “the essence of beauty) because the character in this book appeared to be interesting in that he (Nicholai Hel) was raised in China by his Russian mother and educated in the “way of the warrior” by his Japanese foster father. He ends up being a freelance assassin with some unusual mental intelligence and power.
His development and dislike for political intrigue made this book somewhat of a challenging read. His foster father teaches Nicholai Hel the Japanese game of “GO” and besides becoming fluent in a number of languages, he also becomes a master of “Go.” This book moves along at a regular pace as Nicholai Hel ends up in prison for many years until an American CIA agent makes an offer Nicholai Hel cannot refuse.
Strangely, I could not really get into the character and in fact his obvious hatred for American and other intelligence agencies makes him appear to be more of a psychopathic assassin. He does not seem to have any real loyalty (with the exception of his foster father) to anything and his cold personality and above average intelligence probably makes him the perfect assassin. Even though I did not warm up to this character I found this book a fairly good read.
If you are a fan of this author (Trevanian) you may want to check out this book. I am being generous by giving this book 4 stars.

This is not a new book. I have had a copy since it first came on the shelf and have read it more than several times. It stands alone.
Any effort - i.e. Satori to "cover the lost period " is unnecessary.
The book is perfect, the characters strong and well drawn - especially the bad guys.
I love the book and when my Kindle ran out of juice and turned itself off I found my place in my ancient book copy and continued reading.
It is not for the squeamish or sensitive.
I recommend this book to any adult.

As good as I remembered.

I read this book something like thirty years ago. It was one of the first adult books I read. I absolutely fell in love with it. My knowledge of Japanese culture and ideas was almost nonexistent. The concept of "Shimbumi" as "perfection in the form of something unstated" blew my mind. I adored the main three characters and especially loved the notion of the character of Hana. I liked her unapologetic pride in her career as a concubine. The quote from when Nickoli differentiated Hana from a mistress by saying, "a mistress is unsure of her wage, a wife has none and both are amateurs" was the first quote I ever copied, I thought it was so cool.
Reading this book again was everything I loved about it the first time and so much more. There were subtleties I missed the first time around. The description of the master computer, "Fat Boy," was just right for the 1970's. The story held up really well. I am so glad I got to read it again.
