A book for those who dare to follow their dreams.

This is a wonderful book about a man who gives up a very successful career in the insurance business in order to follow his dream of becoming a writer. By choosing this path he gives up the security of a steady income to enter the uncertain future of being a first time author. Although he and his family struggle to make ends meet, his gamble finally pays off and his first work becomes a national best seller.
This book is also about the main character's desire to spend more quality time with his family, especially his children. Readers will identify with the feelings brought forth as they read this book because many of us know the pain of working so hard that we are not around to see our babies growing up. I recommend this book highly as well as all of Og Mandino's books. A good book to read after "The Choice" is "A Better Way to Live". This book's title is taken from the fictitional title of the book written in "The Choice". It tells the real life story of Og Mandino's own struggle and success in his own life.

The Choice is in fact the best book I have ever read. I read it about 4 years ago and until this day I haven't come across anything better. I recommend it to all of my friends and they always thank me for my recommendation. It is inspiring and uplifting. If you are going to read only one book your whole life read this.

According to the Kebra Negast, the Israelites' Ark of the Covenant was spirited away to the ancient kingdom of Ethiopia by wise King Solomon's own son, offspring of the union between Solomon and the exotic Queen Makeda of Ethiopia (a.k.a. the Queen of Sheba). Gerald Hausman, a consummate storyteller of native traditions, presents the core narrative of the Kebra Negast, from Adam to the rise of the Ethiopian Solomonid dynasty. Folklorist and author Hausman has combined ten years of informal study in Jamaica, the 1922 version of "The Queen of Sheba and Her Only Son Menyelek" (translated by E.A. Wallis Budge), the Koran, the King James Bible, and the words of reggae great Bob Marley into a new version of the Kebra Negast ("the glory of the Kings"). This "lost bible," the core of Rastafarian wisdom and faith, has survived through oral tradition in many Caribbean nations, even though it has been banned because of its African glory themes. Let the reader beware

This version is not to be confused with the classic text of Ethiopian religion/mythology of the same name. This version contains excerpts from the classical ancient text and combines it with anecdotes and sayings of rasafarianism, which is itself a recent concept dating back to the days of Selassie's coronation in 1930 (another story altogther). Basically, this version tries to connect the classic text with modern rastafarianism. If you're interested in rastafarianism, you can go ahead with this. But if you're interested in an English translation of the actual Kebra Nagast (Glory of Kings), see the E.A. Wallace Budge translation or the Miguel Brooks translation.

About the Author

Ian F. Darwin has worked in the computer industry for three decades: with Unix since 1980, Java since 1995, and OpenBSD since 1998. He wrote the freeware file(1) command used on Linux and BSD and is the author of Checking C Programs with Lint, Java Cookbook, and over seventy articles and several courses (both university and commercial) on C and Unix. In addition to programming and consulting, Ian teaches Unix, C, and Java for Learning Tree International, one of the world's largest technical training companies. He runs OpenBSD on most of his computers, and he runs a mirror of The Unix History Society archive.

Invaluable reference guide

Ok, You've been writing Java code for months, maybe even a couple of years. Objects aren't anything special... they're just the natural way to do things. You don't even need to LOOK at the Servlet API anymore. You might even have a SCJP or SCWCD under your belt.
Then, for the first time in years, it happens: you need to interact with a real, honest-to-god file sitting on the hard drive. Or parse a String into a Date object. And this time, you can't just throw the job at Tomcat or JDBC and let it do the dirty work for you. And to your absolute horror, you realize that you don't have the slightest clue in hell how to do it in Java.
That's right... simple, trivial things like file i/o. Something stupid, like reading a text file into a String. After cursing Gosling and Sun for a half hour for not giving String a constructor that takes a File object as its argument and making things that should be trivially easy to do needlessly complicated [ok, all in unison... 'if ((foo != null) && (foo.equals("whatever")))', vs. 'if (foo == "whatever")' ...], it sinks in: You don't know how to do it. Well, OK, that's not quite fair. You have a general idea. Hell, you did it all the time in Perl and C++. You know it probably has something to do with java.io.File, and following the deprecation chain from java.util.Date will lead you to java.util.Calendar. But the devil's in the details, and trying to figure out how to do it from the javadocs alone isn't exactly the most efficient way to burn an afternoon. Especially since all the nice, convenient methods that let you ignore ugly things like character encoding were deprecated LONG ago. Ditto for date parsing.
OK, so you dig out the old books you haven't touched in months, maybe years, on introductory Java. They ignore the topic completely. File I/O? Date parsing? Ewwwww[...] That's *so* 20th century. Objects, Swing, and j2ee are SO much sexier and profitable to write about. What? You really DO need to soil your hands and do it? Well, you'll have to look elsewhere.
That's where this book comes in. It covers all the non-glamourous stuff that 99% of the books on Java more or less ignore or gloss over. Things like I/O. Text handling. You get the idea. The stuff that everyone wants to just delegate to the servlet container or database, but occasionally you really DO need to deal with directly. There's not really anything in this book that you can't find online. But that's not the point... you can blow an hour or two scavenging the info and experimenting to make it work, or you can get the answer in 2 minutes with this book.
Buy it. BEFORE you need it. You'll be glad you did.

Great book for the right audience.

Having owned (and read) a separate (mostly O'Reilly or Sun) book on almost every subject covered here, I didn't find almost anything new or exciting. This is not to say that the book is not good, but just to emphasize one more time that the intended audience have to be taken into consideration.
I think this is a great learning book for intermediate Java programmers who already tried writing some Java programs, but don't have much practical experience yet.
Beginners may not realize "why" these topics are picked for coverage and what are the important points of each example. Yet reading this book may help "prepare the soil" for reading other, special-topic books and source code.
Experienced developers may not find anything eye-opening, as most of what is described in this book they have already learned, usually the hard way. Nevertheless, this book can be used as a good reference book, replacing a whole set of special-topic Java books.
This book provides a good collection of advice about programming problems that occur most often during Java development. Explanations are mostly brief but clear. Code examples are very good. Writing style is clear, just enough humor to keep a reader from falling to sleep. Author's dislike for Windows is made a little too apparent throughout the book and is slightly annoying, but doesn't spoil the overall picture.
To summ things up: a good buy, but you need to understand your needs/expecations.

Much better than the first version

I'm blown away by how much better the second version has improved from the first. I was so disappointed by the first edition that I swore off O'Reilly for a little while. One of my major gripes, the rampant use of classes provided by the author in libraries has all but vanished. In addition the anti-patterns of bad SQL use that are so rampant in other Java books are nowhere to be found, and in their place are recipes that show sane and proper use of JDBC.

I heartily recommend this practical work for Java engineers. For those not familiar with the first edition this is a solid practical work that covers a wide range of Java programming challenges. For those turned off by the first edition, you should take a look at the second, the improvement is profound.

Koontz, who seems to be moving away from supernatural yarns in favor of thrillers grounded in technology and science, here serves up what is probably his best novel to date. Joe Carpenter, a former California crime reporter, loses his wife and daughters in a mysterious plane crash. Soon, a series of strange visits, violent chases, and quasispiritual encounters points to an amazing idea: that a scientist aboard the doomed aircraft had discovered irrevocable proof of life after death and that a secret government organization will stop at nothing to keep this knowledge from the public. Koontz's California is a desperate place "where an unintended slight... might result in a thermonuclear response," and his characters are more jaded than the sappy Pollyannas that populate many of his earlier novels. This is mostly light entertainment, but all popular collections will still want a copy.

Stunning

If anyone were to try and describe this book as a bore, I couldn't conceive any reason why. This book held me completely spellbound. The book starts off with Joe experiencing these unusual chain of events on the one year anniversary of his wife and childrens plane crash. As the days progresses he comes into contact with families who had also lost their loved ones on this devestating flight, but as soon as he does come into contact with them, they begin to parish themselves due to unexplainable suicide and deaths. So what secrets does this "Sole Survivor" have? And will Joe feel these answers justify his loss? I know this book kept me captivated right down to the last page, and Joe's last decision.

I recently picked up this book for four reasons:

1. It was on sale

2. I'd just finished reading "The Husband"

3. I needed light entertainment for a long flight

4. I was in a hurry and it was conveniently stacked near to the register

It was only during the boarding process that I glanced at the back cover, and discovered my faux pas, which did not escape the notice of a literate cabin attendant who gave me "the look".

Okay, maybe a novel about a plane crash is not ideal for a five hour flight, but I'm not superstitious that way (knock wood). Unfortunately, this is a typical Dean Koontz book - it starts off smoothly, gains momentum, takes off and gets moving at high speed, and just when you're enjoying the flight, it suddenly goes crazily off course, crashes and burns.

A crime reporter loses his wife and two daughters in a bizarre plane crash that kills everybody on board. A year later he's still in depression, but then he meets a woman who apparently survived the crash. He starts tracking her down, and relatives of the other victims suddenly start committing suicide under very strange circumstances. When he eventually finds her, things get even weirder, and we're back to secret labs, mad scientists and illegal experiments, mixed with cults, conspiracies and magic pictures.

Enjoy the ride while it lasts, but beware of the sudden stop.

Sensory chocolate...If I were blind, I'd want Koontz to be my eyes

I relished this book the way one would relish a good chocolate bar...reading and letting it soak into my soul. This is one of the few books I've read that actually draws you into the scenery. You don't know if it's the reality of the characters or Koontz's talented, yet subtle description of places and situations. When he's sitting on the beach, you can feel almost hear the waves and smell the sea salt. When he's on the run from dangerous people, you almost feel like you're there in the passenger seat beside him.

I finished this book, put it down and just said, "Wow..."

Is there life after death? That's the question this book tackles...and while the journey to this answer is spell-binding, I think we, the readers, wanted more elaboration into this question. If only Koontz knew all the answers!

I'm surprised at the negative reviews, but I can see why some wouldn't like this. Unfortunately, many Koontz readers aren't true lovers of his literary genius. Koontz books are usually prominently displayed in the grocery store's best-seller section...a convenient buy for readers not looking for a read from someone with enormous talent, but rather something that will entertain with a good plot but no supporting filler or depth.

If you're not a serious reader, but a poolside one, this might not be the book for you. The glory of Koontz's writing is in the details and the ending isn't written for the poolside crowd that want to see the impossible happen. There's no swell of trumpets and bringing back of the dead. The ending is tremendously satisfying, but I wish it was elaborated on with as much detail as the rest of the story.

To really "get" Koontz's writing, you have to have an open mind and leave aside skeptical opinions, as much of what he writes seems to be horror, sci-fi, supernatural, or suspense. You have to fully allow yourself to leave your own world or you will never be able to enjoy the tale as presented.

Nobody can deny that Koontz is a spectacular writer. I haven't read every single one of Koontz's novels and I'm glad I haven't. I think it dims your appreciation for a good novel when you read it because you spend all your time comparing it to every other work ever written by Koontz. When it comes to a good author, this can be like comparing your own children. If you have never read Koontz, definitely buy this book. If you have, try to clear your mind of who the author is and "open your heart" to this wonderful story.

I have been teaching with "Prehospital Emergency Care" since the 5th edition. This edition has not only added a new chapter and updated content to reflect new practices, it has infused the text with a major slap of more advanced concept pathophysiology.

For instructors and students: the level of pathophysiology (alpha/beta, pre and afterload, SVR, epinephrine's affect on insulin, RAS, ventilation/perfusion ratio, etc...) is a slow sluggish path to wade through. The National Standards Curriculum does not require such level of specificity and most of the how and why of the pathophysiology will not change the BLS management of a patient. However, there are some questions on the NREMT that relate to these topics.

Many of the images and graphs have been updated, but are still quite repetitive.

The assessment chapter is a nightmare to get through - as it has been. New EMS students cannot digest 15+ assessment algorithms this quickly. BSI is now "Standard Precautions." There are many changes to oxygen administration.

Even with its flaws, it is still the best EMT training text out there.

The book is everything that I needed, it was brand new. The authors did a very poor job improving the book though compared to the last edition. I had hoped that they edited out the many confusing points. Over all, I passed the national reg test. Youtube does a better job explaining some of the points.

This doesn't come with an Access code for the MyPearson Registration and that's what I needed that's why I bought it "New" but the book was just in the box and not sealed.
