CS6: Back to Basics
By F. S. L'hoir
Oh! How I wish I had owned a book like this one back when I began back in 2001. It would have saved me a lot of trial and error, and simply not using certain functions, because I wasn't quite sure what they did. Although I was lucky enough to have excellent teachers during the years, who taught me tricks of photo editing, such as adjusting levels and curves, layers, filters, color selection, and so forth, I knew that there was an awful lot that I still had to discover (and I am still in the process of discovering).

I just upgraded from CS5 5o CS6, so I am a longtime Adobe user (I believe I started with the old Photoshop 5). "Teach Yourself Visually: Adobe Photoshop CS6", however, targets the first-time user of the application. The book is, however, by no means 'dumbed down.' Proliferated with colorful screenshots and step-by-step instructions, it serves as a handy manual for review. It is also extremely clear in its instructions, employing bold-faced numbered steps for essential actions; bulleted steps for clarification and indented steps for the result. It also defines its terms clearly, presenting them in -italics- so that they will not be missed. In addition, the book gives not only tips and shortcuts, but also warnings about what not to do.

My only complaint is that the screenshots are on the small side (One needs a magnifying glass to see the details). The book nevertheless makes up for this defect by defining its terms clearly, so that the new Photoshop user will get a head start in working with images. It also carefully explains the toolbox and the individual tools. And while it does not go into advanced tasks, such as puppet warp, the book provides plenty of information about the hands-on basics that will not only help you build your basic Photoshop skills but will also remove the guesswork about the functions of this outstanding application.

4 Books compared- each with strengths and weaknesses
By LD
Teach Yourself Visually is great for its straight-forward numbered steps on menus, menu items, and photos. It is aimed at beginners to intermediate users. It does not cover video. On Demand also has numbered steps and adds subtle variations and "when do I use it" suggestions. It is a little harder for beginners and spans to high end users. For Dummies is for beginners and low intermediates but is skimpy on photos and illustrations. WOW Book trumps everybody with photos, explanations, and examples for beginners through pro photographers (includes Camera Raw and some video). It does not cover CS6 new features but it includes a DVD with some presets you may find helpful.

Comparison note: each number will be the corresponding discussion in that book

CS6 Teach Yourself Visually
1) Brightness/Contrast: suggests Dodge and Burn Tools for small segments
"Note: Increasing contrast can bring out details in your image; decreasing it can soften details."
Its the only book of these 3 that explains that the Auto Contrast button "converts the lightest pixels in the image to white and the darkest pixels in the image to black."
No explanation for the Use Legacy check box.

2) Levels or Curves: uses Image-Adjustments-Levels or Curves path
Explains the sliders very well but ignores the Options button.

3) Record an Action: has the steps for a straight record of series of steps but ignores the use of Insert Menu Item to bring up dialog box for inputing numbers.

4) Unsharp Mask: ignored

5) Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, Patch Tool, Clone Source: excellent before and after photos so little text is needed for explanation.

6) Filters=25 pages, Layers=53 pages

CS6 On Demand
1) Brightness/Contrast: explains this adds/subtracts everything equally
"Since Photographs are not linear in nature, the Brightness/Contrast adjustment is not recommended for use on images. Instead, use a Levels or a Curves adjustment for photos."
"If you prefer the CS2 method for Brightness/Contrast, select the Use Legacy check box."
No explanation for the Auto Contrast button.

2) Levels: uses Layers-Adjustment Layer-Levels path with more options but complex learning curve
Curves: uses Image-Adjustments-Curves path with detailed dialog box explanation

3) Record an Action: very detailed explanation of everything except Insert Menu Item which leaves out being able to input numbers

4) Unsharp Mask: not very helpful

5) Clone Stamp Tool: suggests also considering Clone Source, Healing Brush, Patch Tool but fails to refer to the "+" source location
"You can repair damage to an image, remove a tree, add/delete someone from an image."
"The Clone Source panel allows you to take 5 samples for the Clone stamp or Healing Brush tools."
"The Patch Tool takes a sample and matches the texture, lighting, transparency, and shading of the sample to the source, creating an almost seamless repair."

6) Filters=33 pages, Layers=25 pages

CS6 for Dummies
1) Brightness/Contrast: old-timers should check the Legacy box, others should use Levels or Curves
"The Auto Tone, Auto Contrast, Auto Color adjustments found in the Image menu rather than Image-Adjustments, are one-click solutions to many image problems. However, the improved algorithms used by the Auto buttons in the Levels and Curves dialog boxes are usually worth the additional couple of clicks."

2) Levels or Curves: read the text rather than a numbered sequence
"Drag the slider controls under the histogram in the Levels dialog box inward until they're under the point where the histogram begins to rise in a mountain shape. Ignore those little flat tails that extend outward-they represent individual stray pixels."

3) Record an Action: good text explanations but needs visual examples
"When you use a menu command while recording your Action the actual vales that you enter into the dialog box are recorded. If you'd rather select the values appropriate for each individual image (Unsharp Mask, Image Size) use Insert Menu Item."

4) Unsharp Mask: the most helpful tips
"Amount slider: 50% for small images, use 100% for general photos, use up to 500% for special effects."
"Radius slider: as low as 1 pixel for small images, as high as 7 for large images without details."
"Threshold slider: 2 for small images, 5-7 for a large image."

5) Clone Stamp Tool: photo comparison of difference between it and Healing Brush
"It's like copy/paste in a brush. Option/Alt+click a source area and then move the cursor and drag where you want to copy those pixels."

6) Filters=21 pages, Layers=19 pages

A great starter book for Photoshop CS6
By Nick
I'm an amateur photographer, and have been contemplating buying Photoshop CS6 for a while now, but the software is rather indimidating. I have some small experience in Photoshop Elements, and I think that the book could even help with that. Even the wonderful The Adobe Photoshop CS6 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter) feels a bit intimidating, but not this book.

This book is geared towards Photoshop rookies, like graphics design students and photographers. With the vast number of photos and step-by-step walkthroughs. There are examples to download from Wiley's website (the URL is on the back of the book) so you can work through the examples. This certainly makes the book worthwhile. It's like having your own instructor and can walk through each chapter.

For the price of the book, it can't be beat. It certainly takes the anxiety out of learning Photoshop and makes the investment worthwhile. I wasn't familiar with the "Teach Yourself Visually" series of books, but if all the books are like this, then I just found my new favorite series of books to learn from.
