A WWII airman's tale

A very interesting story of a young American who is part of Tom Brokaw"s "The Greatest Generation". A nineteen year old boy leaves his New England village to fight for his country in WWII and returns a man after being a POW in a German prison camp. His insightful first hand account of being a POW gives the reader a feel for the atrocities endured and the courage to survive. This is a story of patriotism, courage and humor. A good book for students of history and anyone interested in WWII. A great read.

A true tale of survival by a young man in his late teens who ends up having to parachute out of his B-24 on it's 7th mission. His ordeal winds him up in the famous Stalag Luft III camp for a year learning how to survive as a POW. His journey to the camp, death marches through the depths of winter and finally liberation are told very matter-of-fact but with lots of documentation to support his tale and loaded with keen observation. The book is filled with antedotes of how the "kriegies" worked together to keep their moral up and keep their German camp staff overly occupied with espionage plans. Stalag III was the camp immortalized in the movie "The Great Escape". I have met the author and he is one genuine hero to say the least.
