I See Potential in These Tales of Whimsy

I had the pleasure of meeting Stacie Sugioka at the Imagine Other Worlds with Authors Signing Event in July. One of the other organizers was gracious enough to loan me a copy of Stacie’s first publication, Tales of Whimsy: Four Stories of Unlikely Heroes.

Coming in at 52 pages, Tales of Whimsy won’t take most readers more than a day to read. It was a refreshing break from my normal fare. I often struggle with short stories and novellas because I am one of those readers always wanting more time with the plot and characters. But, somehow, in a few short pages (one of the stories is just over 3 pages), Ms. Sugioka is able to tell a complete bite-sized stories.

With a little more editing to clean up story continuity, especially in the first story, Ms. Sugioka will become a stronger storyteller who is able to write stories for children as she does in “Jebediah, the Unlikely Hero, and the Three Plagues of the Kingdom,” and for adults as she does in “The Fortune Maker.” If you are looking for a lighter, quick read and one that you could share with your children, I would definitely recommend Tales of Whimsy: Four Stories of Unlikely Heroes.

I loved this book for a plethora of reasons

I loved this book for a plethora of reasons. The artifice put forth into crafting four distinct, thought-provoking tales of imagination and intrigue is overwhelmingly apparent. With each story, the author (Stacie Sugioka) forces the reader to think differently about each story respectively. All the while, she allows for a broad alley of interpretation, limited only by the potentiality of individual perspective. Sugioka also displays a profusion of heart, reminiscent of the warmest of childhood nostalgia, one can assume, most adults have experienced in their time. I strongly recommend this book for just about anyone. Give it a read. You won't regret it!

I enjoyed reading this while sipping on a cup of piping hot coffee in the morning. I usually don't read fiction, but I'm glad I picked this one for my next read. It was a refreshing change from adult-y type books! Each story reads like a great friend telling you of lost legends. I loved that each story was short, but I found myself craving more details of the wedding in "Jebediah", because it was my favorite!

Patients are first given information about healthy sleep and the reasons for improving sleep habits, then a behavioral program is developed to address that patient's specific sleep problems. Use of sleep logs, assessment forms, and other homework (all provided in the corresponding workbook) allows client and therapist to work together to develop an effective sleep regimen tailored specifically for each client. Finally, several sessions are dedicated to increasing compliance and problem-solving.

Awesome work by David Myrland!!

Anyone who is forced to pay federal taxes NEEDS to see the IRC statute that specifies how one is to tax 'compensation
for services' and realize that the IRS is hiding this information from the public's view, so as to tax us unlawfully!!

Section 83 is everyone's saving grace, in that your 'wages' are NOT 'income', because 'income' is PROFIT OR GAIN,
NOT 'wages'!!! David Myrland has de-coded this IRC Section 83. It proves that we have ALL been denied the statutorily-
protected provisions of Sections 83, 212, 1001, 1011 and 1012!! Most ALL CPA's haven't a clue about these provisions,
either!!

The 1040 Form goes right to Section 61(a) (which deals with 'income') and has NO provision to utilize the protections
of Section 83!!

This looks like the key to freedom from most income taxes

I never saw so much research to back up a single point made by any other author. David has clearly done his homework. The courts are clear. The law is clear. The author is super clear! Section 83 is 'the law' which should provide tax freedom to most employee wages and other compensation in exchange for labor, which includes most everybody! Everyone needs to have this book. Read it, understand it and then 'Use' it!

About the Author
MacGregor Knox has served as Stevenson Professor of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science since 1994. He was educated at Harvard College (BA, 1967) and Yale University (PhD in History, 1977), and has also taught at the University of Rochester (USA). His writings deal with the wars and dictatorships of the savage first half of the twentieth century and with contemporary international and strategic history, and include Mussolini Unleashed, 1939 1941 (1982); The Making of Strategy: Rulers, States, and War (edited, with Williamson Murray and Alvin Bernstein, 1994); Common Destiny: Dictatorship, Foreign Policy, and War in Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany (2000); The Dynamics of Military Revolution, 1300 2050 (edited, with Williamson Murray, 2001); and To the Threshold of Power: Origins and Dynamics of the Fascist and National Socialist Dictatorships (2007). Between his undergraduate and graduate studies he spent three years in the US Army, and served in the Republic of Vietnam (1969) as rifle platoon leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

Williamson Murray is Professor Emeritus in the Department of History at Ohio State University and the Ambassador Anthony D. Marshall Chair of Strategic Studies at Marine Corps University, as well as a defense consultant and commentator on historical and military subjects in Washington, DC. His most recent books are Successful Strategies (edited with Richard Hart Sinnreich) and The Iran-Iraq War (written with Kevin Woods), both published by Cambridge in 2014, and War, Strategy, and Military Effectiveness and Military Adaptation in War, both published by Cambridge in 2011. The Heart of Asymmetric Advantage is NOT Technology

This is the only serious book I have been able to find that addresses revolutions in military affairs with useful case studies, a specific focus on whether asymmetric advantages do or do not result, and a very satisfactory executive conclusion. This book is strongly recommended for both military professionals, and the executive and congressional authorities who persist in sharing the fiction that technology is of itself an asymmetric advantage.

It merits emphasis that the author's first conclusion, spanning a diversity of case studies, is that technology may be a catalyst but it rarely drives a revolution in military affairs--concepts are revolutionary, it is ideas that break out of the box.

Their second conclusion is both counter-intuitive (but based on case studies) and in perfect alignment with Peter Drucker's conclusions on successful entrepreneurship: the best revolutions are incremental (evolutionary) and based on solutions to actual opponents and actual conditions, rather than hypothetical and delusional scenarios of what we think the future will bring us. In this the authors mesh well with Andrew Gordon's masterpiece on the rules of the game and Jutland: we may be best drawing down on our investments in peacetime, emphasizing the education of our future warfighters, and then be prepared for massive rapid agile investments in scaling up experimental initiatives as they prove successful in actual battle.

The book is noteworthy for its assault on fictional scenarios and its emphasis on realism in planning--especially valuable is the authors' staunch insistence that only honesty, open discussion among all ranks, and the wide dissemination of lessons learned, will lead to improvements.

Finally, the authors are in whole-hearted agreement with Colin Gray, author of Modern Strategy, in stating out-right that revolutions in military affairs are not a substitute for strategy as so often assumed by utopian planners, but merely an operational or tactical means.

This is a brilliant, carefully documented work that should scare the daylights out of every taxpayer--it is nothing short of an indictment of our entire current approach to military spending and organization. As the author's quaintly note in their understated way, in the last paragraph of the book, "the present trend is far from promising, as the American government and armed forces procure enormous arsenals only distantly related to specific strategic needs and operational and tactical employment concepts, while continu[ing], in the immortal words of Kiffin Rockwell, a pilot in the legendary First World War Lafayette Escadrille, to 'fly along, blissfully ignorant, hoping for the best.'"

Lest the above be greeted with some skepticism, let us note the 26 October 2001 award of $200 billion to Lockheed for the new Joint Strike Fighter calls into serious question whether the leadership in the Pentagon understands the real world--the real world conflicts of today--all 282 of them (counting 178 internal conflicts) will require the Joint Strike Fighter only 10% of the time--the other 90% of our challenges demand capabilities and insights the Pentagon is not only not capable of fielding, it simply refuses to consider them to be "real war." Omar Bin Laden beat the Pentagon on 11 September 2001, and he (and others who follow in his footsteps) will continue to do so until we find a military leadership that can lead a real-world revolution in military affairs.... rather than a continuing fantasy in which the military-industrial complex lives on regardless of how many homeland attacks we suffer.

Technology alone just doesn't cut it....

This book contains an awful lot of wisdom for such a slim volume (it clocks in at just under 200 pages).
The authors examine the natures of military revolutions and RMA (a very hot topic that has arguably produced more hot air than substance) and provide a number of case studies examining the issues and testing the authors' views through history.
The case studies are;
- The English in the 14th century
- 17th century France
- The French Revolution
- The American Civil War
- The Prussian RMA, 1840-1871
- The Battlefleet Revolution
- The First World War
- Blitzkrieg 1940
The various case studies are backed up by an extremely satisfying introduction and a thorough, well argued conclusion which fires one or two shots across the bows of those residents of the Pentagon who may be suffering from technology-centric tunnel vision. The authors (very distinguished bunch, it should be said) warn against the idea that Clausewitzian truths regarding such issues as friction can be discounted thanks to the wonders of technology and indeed make clear that they are as important as ever.
The various case studies work extremely well as concise stand-alone works on their various historical periods, even if RMA is not your hot topic. Especially good are the chapters on the English in the 14th century and on the Battlefleet Revolution (and the inner workings of the Imperial German Navy and the Royal Navy during this period).
This is a well written, interesting book which should annoy all the right people.

A unique experience...

... a book that is both required reading AND interesting!

The Dynamics of Military Revolution looks at the evolution of military power and does it very well. This book looks at Military Revolutions (which had wide-ranging impacts on social and political matters as well as military) and Revolutions in Military Affairs (which are characterized by new weapons, tactics and other military innovations and which can contribute to Military Revolutions).

If you're looking for a theory that explains why new weapons systems aren't always revolutionary, or how something as simple as paying your troops for a change can result in a major shift in military power, then this is a book you want to read. It includes a lot of good writing and the reasoning behind it is impeccable. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.

Why two heads aren’t necessarily better

According to conventional wisdom, two heads are better than one. In other words, group decisions should be better than decisions made by individuals since there are more people pondering them. Not so, contend Reid Hastie and Cass Sunstein, who cite evidence that committees and boards can be more error-prone than individuals. The authors explain why, and offer ways to improve group decision-making.

The evidence, write Hastie and Sunstein, indicate that groups commonly succumb to groupthink, where members get on board with the prevailing views in the group in a “group-level cascade.” Therefore they fail to critically examine proposals. Instead of having everyone actively participate in decision-making, groups are often dominated by a few members who have disproportionate influence. When various members don’t bring up contradictory information, the group is deprived of relevant evidence that might make for a more successful decision.

A notorious example in history was John F. Kennedy’s cabinet giving the green light to the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion. Various cabinet members harbored serious doubts about the policy, but did not express their view at the time, assuming that everyone else was in favor. Thus JFK was deprived of valuable information that might have prevented the debacle.

All human beings have certain biases -- such as optimism bias, loss aversion, and self-serving bias -- but groups tend to amplify those biases, and that leads to inaccurate decisions. It happens because group decisions increase confidence and decrease disagreement. Group deliberation makes people more unified even in their private views; thus groups are polarizing in moving members toward one viewpoint that they did not all start with.

Committees are more likely to make solid decisions when three factors are present. Members have accurate social perception in reading people’s emotions; when most members of the group instead of a few actually participate; and when there are a significant number of women in the group.

There are ways to improve group decision-making. One way is for the chairman to elicit information that people have, by making sure younger or newer members are encouraged to talk and that diverse perspectives are welcomed. Since a leader taking a strong advocacy position will inhibit discussion, good leaders should be slow to take positions and should not do most of the talking. The chairman should recognize the value of anxious people who are cautious about what could go wrong, as opposed to happy talk people telling the leader what he wants to hear.
Groups need to redefine what it means to be a team player: Those who are most valuable to the team are individuals who contribute something that the others are missing, such as critical scrutiny. Hastie and Sunstein make a convincing case that a better group culture means more successful groups. ###

Others found the right guide, such as the Sufi poet Rumi, who met his beloved teacher in a bustling Turkish marketplace. In Mystics, Masters, Saints, and Sages: Stories of Enlightenment, Robert Ullman and Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman comb the world's religions for examples of human beings who have apparently transcended earthly limitations and achieved a state of higher consciousness. These enlightened masters, say the authors, have experienced a sense of interconnectedness with all life. Casting a wide net, the authors include writings from Krishnamurti, Saint Catherine of Siena, the Baal Shem Tov, Paramahansa Yogananda, Peace Pilgrim and the poet Rumi, among others. Each primary source is introduced by a brief (and somewhat superficial) biography of the mystic who wrote it.

Thirty-three stories of enlightenment from sources famous (Saint John of the Cross) and more obscure (Lester Levenson) are gathered in this book, which aims to stir spiritual growth in its readers. There is a decidedly New Age tilt to the book, what with 12 stories from India and few sources who lived religious lives within a single tradition, but the Ullmans know their audience well. It is unfortunate that they so often rely on compilation--the Buddha's story here, for instance, comes from a mixture of sutras--rather than using primary sources. The introduction makes clear that they presuppose the universality of experiences of enlightenment, arguing that while such an event may be colored by religious tradition, enlightenment transcends religious affiliation. Rumi would probably disagree, as would several of the other enlightened figures cited in the book. But every religious tradition adopts and reinvents ancestors. The movement toward nondogmatic spiritual awareness is no different. A good companion for spiritual seekers. John Green

Mystics, Masters, Saints, and Sages

Robert Ullman and Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman are naturopathic and homeopathic physicians who have also studied with numerous spiritual teachers. Mystics, Masters, Saints, and Sages: Stories of Enlightenment is their seventh book, in which their "intent is to capture the experience of enlightenment as clearly and succinctly as possible."
While recognizing that each individual's experience will be unique, the Ullmans believe that the stories of others will serve as models or signposts for those who are still seeking. They emphasize that "no one religion, country, socioeconomic class, or gender has laid special claim to enlightenment." They've chosen a diverse collection of stories, ranging from Buddha to St. Catherine of Siena to Suzanne Segal. A total of thirty-three stories are told.
Each story focuses on the moment of transformation in each individual's life. The Ullmans include a brief informational essay, describing the culture and times the individual lived in and his or her teachings. The enlightenment stories themselves are in the words of the masters themselves whenever possible; or from those closest to them.
An extensive bibliography provides a variety of sources for readers wishing to delve further into the lives and times of the individuals.
Although every enlightenment experience is different, the authors describe the common elements they discovered. These include interconnectedness and ego transcendence, timelessness and spaciousness, acceptance, beyond pleasure and pain, clarity, and shattering of preconceived notions.
In his foreword, His Holiness The Dalai Lama says "each human being has an equal opportunity to attain wisdom, happiness, and enlightenment by cultivating a correct motivation-a sincere aspiration to benefit all sentient beings-and engaging in diligent practice." He adds that Mystics, Masters, Saints, and Sages "is a valuable, inspiring book." It belongs in the library of all readers seeking spiritual insight.

Very Inspiring...

I was browsing the internet and I was so surprised that there are no reviews of this book listed online, that I felt I had to add this. I received this book as a gift from my wife a few years ago. This book is a wonderful and inspiring book that provides an insight into the lives and experiences many of the larger-than-life spiritual figures we've read about, as well as many people, from ancient times as well as recent times, that you've probably never heard of. In many cases it includes excerpts of the writings of the subjects themselves. To me, the instincts of the authors were spot-on in writing the book and selecting a handful of subjects from the dozens of candidates I am sure they must have considered.

When I want to improve my attitude or need to remember why I pursue the spiritual practices I do, I pick us this book and read a chapter or two...

Fascinating and disturbing

33 stories of enlightenment, straight from the horse's mouth. Thirteen of the enlightened persons in the book were born in the 20th century, and photographs are included of many of them. This in itself helps me overcome the sense that these folks are completely "other."
The stories of enlightenment cover as wide a spectrum as you could imagine, from 16 year old boys in India who suddenly attained enlightenment, to middle age businessmen, to the very troubling story of Suzanne Segal, a young pregnant women whose mind suddenly disengaged from her body one day as she stepped onto a bus. For some, their experience was the culmination of a long-sought spiritual release. For others, it was spontaneous and not entirely pleasant.
The absence of Jesus in this book is regretable, but perhaps the lack of any first-hand account of His experience excuses that (though I think John 14-17 would have made a nice addition). Several Christian mystics are included however.
Apart from the absence of Jesus, the editorial choices are excellent. The editorial comments, however, leave something to be desired. Often the little introductory blurb simply pre-tells the story that is told quite clearly in the excerpt to follow. There's no point in quoting what someone is about to say! In general, however, enough biographical information is provided to place the writings of each enlightened person in context.
If you have read (or experienced) some mysticism and wonder where this is all going or how enlightenment actually comes about, this book is for you. If you want a theoretical or philosophic introduction to mysticism, look elsewhere. For me, this book was very-- well pardon the pun, but very enlightening! The variety or paths and yet the commonality of experience does lead to some conclusions. The honesty in including some experiences that were not all sweetness and light is also important.
The authors deliver exactly what they promise: descriptions of enlightenment itself, told by those who have lived it.

Enjoyable, but politically incorrect.

This book is very reminiscent of my English childhood and will amuse adults and children alike. Similar ilk to Milly-Molly-Mandy. Be warned, however, there is much use of the word 'bad' in relation to children rather than children's behaviour, some parents may object to this. My 5-year-old found the naughty little sister's antics quite hilarious and greatly enjoyed the short, lively chapters and lovely illustrations. I would recommend this book for little children who would appreciate the English references.

When I was little my parents would read me this book and it was halarious to me at the age of 4. This book will amuse any child and even parents. Best of all they are true stories. I give it 10 stars !

Naughty little girls have more fun

These dozen stories about the high-spirited young sister of the narrator are meant to be read aloud. The naughty little sister has an indulgent father, a disciplinarian mother, and a disapproving older sister who tries to make moral tales out of the bad sister. (The story about her father having to look after her all day was at the beginning of the book, but it would have been a funny comeuppance for the father later in the book.) But children will identify with the physically active and inquisitive little sister, her thoughtless antics, and the inevitable consequences, such as falling off the gate or eating too much spongy trifle. These British stories were written in the 1950s and may require some explanation for American children, but anyone who has had to put up with a bossy, goody-goody sibling like the narrator will enjoy the fun and friends of the naughty little sister, even as they see the mistakes she makes.
