The M Room: Secret Listeners who Bugged the Nazis, by Helen Fry

As seen on PBS and Channel 4’s documentary Spying on Hitler's Army, this is the story of the German migrs who fled Hitler’s regime and became secret listeners for British Intelligence during WW2.

Behind the walls of the M Room (M for 'miked') they bugged the conversations of over 10,000 German POWs, including 59 German generals at Trent Park in North London. Providing a detailed, oft humorous, insight into life of the generals in captivity, the book shows the farcical ‘stage-set’ in which they found themselves.

But against this backdrop, the secret listeners eavesdropped on military secrets, V1 & V2, atomic bomb, as well as admission of war crimes and terrible atrocities against Russians, Poles and Jews.

For over 60 years the secret listeners never spoke about their work, not even to their families. Many went to their grave bearing the secrets of the nation which had saved them from certain death. Thousands of transcripts were only declassified in 2004.

Original source material from German POWs--revealed
By James Denny
There is no price that can be placed on the value of original source material. Finally released in 1999, some 54 years after WWII ended, transcripts discussed in Helen Fry's "The M Room" are taken from bugged conversations of captured German (and some Italian) POWs sent to Britain as POWs from 1942 to 1945.

In the early years, captured POWs were mostly downed aviators or surviving crewmen from submarines or other sunken naval vessels. In those early years, immediate intelligence was the hoped-for treasure, information that could provide timely help to the Allies in learning German strategic plans, weaponry, technology and battle tactics.

As the War progressed, more regular Wehrmacht soldiers were captured. Intelligence as to morale, struggles within the leadership, declining standards of behavior and conduct, the attempts to assassinate Hitler, mass killings of captured prisoners, civilians, and the Final Solution to the Jewish issue, the Holocaust, became central themes.

While captured POWs had every expectation they might have their conversations bugged, they were treated well. As time passed, most POWs tended to let down their guard. A planned strategy for never putting more than two POWs to a cell meant the monitored conversations from the perspective on the POWs were simply daily dialogue between roommates. Even the most senior Generals tended share their ideas and knowledge with one-another. By carefully matching formal interrogations to facts and information as it became known through monitored conversations, the POWs increasingly revealed information of significance along with many dark secrets.

Another book on this same subject, "Soldaten," by three authors, Neitzel, Weiser and Chase came out in 2012. It delves into the same material presented in "The M Room" from more of a psychological perspective.

Fry's perspective in The M Room"is somewhat different. She worked with a elderly, surviving eavesdropper/translator "Fritz," which puts everthing into a more intimate and personal perspective. Fritz was one of many escaped German Jews who fled Germany in the late 1930's. Fritz's personal life and story reveal what it was like in the role of eavesdropper/secret translator. Fritz and the other translators needed to have native-level German language fluency to fully grasp what the POWs were saying--and what they meant. Because there are many dialects of German, understanding the regional dialects was important. It was also the case that the translators needed to know military code and conduct and to learn details about military technology and equipment. It was a demanding and difficult job. The translators were sworn to lifetime secrecy. Their work would not be revealed until this information was de-classified in 1999.

It is safe to say that the considerable information in these 50,000 transcripts will continue to be researched and analyzed in the decades to come.

Fascinating
By Steve A
A very interesting book about an aspect of WWII that it seems few, including myself knew about. The allied codebreakers at Bletchley Park and elsewhere have been centre stage, but in this book Helen Fry has revealed an major aspect of allied intelligence gathering that produced results of the same order of importance. The book deals with the story of the special POW camps housing senior German officers and the clandestine monitoring and recording of those officers' private conversations ultimately by locally recruited ex-patriot Jewish Germans. The information gleaned was invaluable in many campaigns.
The sad aspect is that oneof the innermost secrets of the German warmachine, the concentration camps were laid bare to these intelligence gatherers who being sworn to secrecy had to privately endure the pain that their friends and relatives may be going through. Furthermore although this information was available to the allied top brass, for various reasons it could not be passed down or publicised for fear of revealing the sources.
An interesting book but not always an easy read. Recommended to all who want to know all about intelligence gathering in WWII.

Fascinating Story
By Manfred Rikkerhausen
Especially in contrast to the latest robust interegation of prisoners and suspected terriorists in modern times, it is very interesting to see the effectiveness of doing the opposite and then listening in. There are many lessons to be relearned here from this story.

However the writing does seem to suffer from very third hand - as would be expected of a book looking through files from so many years ago. Having said that, its still a fascinating tale.
