Writing Beyond Race: Living Theory and Practice, by bell hooks

What are the conditions needed for our nation to bridge cultural and racial divides? By "writing beyond race," noted cultural critic bell hooks models the constructive ways scholars, activists, and readers can challenge and change systems of domination.

In the spirit of previous classics like Outlaw Culture and Reel to Real, this new collection of compelling essays interrogates contemporary cultural notions of race, gender, and class. From the films Precious and Crash to recent biographies of Malcolm X and Henrietta Lacks, hooks offers provocative insights into the way race is being talked about in this "post-racial" era.

Book's series of essays illustrates how living beyond race takes awareness as well as action. I also enjoyed the movie critiques of Crash, The Help, and Precious.

Very well written!!!

I really enjoy reading bell hooks, she's one of my favorite authors. In this piece, it can definitely be stated that she has delivered another engaging and provoking collection of essays. Her critiques of contemporary films like "Precious" and "Crash" are on point. I also think she wrote a really brilliant criticism of Rebecca Skloots new work on Henrietta Lacks. At times I have been disappointed with the editors and/or publishing companies who put out Ms. hook's work because there have often been careless typos and complete disregard for her publications. There were a few minor typos/grammatical mistakes with this piece as well. As a frequent reader of authors published by Routledge, I have learned to overlook this, but it can certainly be said that they did much better with this piece. In fact they seem to be getting better in general, and I hope they can keep it up. Overall this was an insightful and enlightening read, anyone who is a fan of bell hooks will be more than pleased.
